The Position

Under the supervision of the Facilities Field Supervisor, the Custodian performs a variety of tasks associated with the custodial care and maintenance of City buildings.  Duties include performing repairs and maintenance (painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, mechanical), cleaning and sanitizing,  maintaining custodial equipment and tools, maintenance service records logs, locking facilities as needed,  using tools such as floor buffers, steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuum, mops, broom, dusting equipment, small hand and power tools, and motor vehicles, and providing excellent customer service to employees and other individuals within the City.

Candidates must commit to working a permanent schedule that includes late nights and/or early mornings.  Before being hired, candidates must also undergo and pass a comprehensive background process due to the sensitive nature of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Custodian I

· Graduation from High School or  possession of GED

Custodian II

·  Graduation from High School or  possession of GED

·  A minimum of two (2) years previous  custodial work experience

Special Requirements

· Candidate will undergo a comprehensive background check due to the sensitive nature of the position

· Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California state driver’s license

· Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Applicants should possess working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in buildings and grounds maintenance, minor repairs; knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions; ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time; communicate orally and in writing; understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.  The Custodian is regularly required to reach with hands and arms; stand or walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; possess close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

This position is a year-round, part-time position.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is recruiting for a part-time Custodian to support various custodial needs of the city.  The specific work schedule of the part-time Custodian may vary based on the needs of the City, but will include daytime, evening and weekend hours.  In addition, work hours may be broken up in a non-sequential manner throughout the day/evening to accommodate various city programs and events and various work locations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under direct supervision of the Senior Custodian or Recreation Supervisor, work as assigned in the routine care and maintenance of buildings.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, assists in the planning and scheduling of custodial maintenance of City buildings; supervises work crews; personally performs a variety of skilled building cleaning maintenance tasks; and performs related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under the direction of the Custodial Services Supervisor, assists in the scheduling and organization of custodial crews; may personally train, direct and perform work with floor maintenance crew; personally perform various skilled cleaning operations and may be assigned to any work shift schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, chemicals and equipment used in the custodial maintenance of buildings; State and Federal requirements for safety labeling of chemicals.

Ability to:       Understand and follow written and oral instructions; prepare clear and accurate reports; use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency; perform physical labor; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Experience:  Two years of full-time custodial maintenance experience in public buildings or offices.

Education:    Graduation from high school or equivalent. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.

License:         Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of Casual Maintenance Custodian. Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor, the Casual Maintenance Custodian serves as the worker in the duties of care, upkeep, and cleaning of assigned buildings and related facilities.  The incumbent may be required to travel between several City buildings during their scheduled shift.

Sweep, dust, mop, strip, and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets and rugs; dust and polish woodwork fixtures, and equipment; wash windows, walls, and doors; empty and clean waste receptacles; empty recycling containers; clean restrooms and maintain supplies; clean kitchen and lunchroom areas and appliances; dust and clean air vents; Move furniture as required by for cleaning; set up rooms for special events; replace light bulbs and tubes; maintain inventory of equipment and supplies; sweep exterior building entries; secure facilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:  Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial maintenance.

Ability to:  Understand and follow written and oral directions; clean and care for assigned facilities in a safe and efficient manner; maintain and appropriate public service demeanor and positive customer service interactions; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Physical capability to:  Perform sustained manual labor; lift, climb, stoop, crawl, and bend to reach work

Experience:  One year of full time custodial maintenance in public buildings or offices.

Education:  Graduation from high school or equivalent.  Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.

License:  Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is desirable.  This provision may be waived for applicants 15 to 18 years of age with the ability to obtain a valid work permit.

Experience:  Previous experience as a lifeguard and WSI certification is desirable.

Special Requirements:  Current Lifeguarding, Standard First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificates are required.  Applicants appointed to this position must be able to obtain Oxygen Administration certification within a year of employment.

SALARY AND HOURS:

$14.28 – $14.99 – $15.74 – $16.53 - $17.34 per hour.  Part-time position paid sick leave benefit available. Initial appointments are generally made at the first step of this five-step scale.  Hours will range from 15-25 hours per week.  Candidates that make the eligibility list may be selected for shifts as needed throughout the year. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays throughout the entire year.
