This position performs a variety of work in the monitoring of county, state and federal detainees and maintains the security and safety of inmates and staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Performs booking procedures, including receiving, booking and assigning prisoners to cells; performing body searches; fingerprinting, and photographing prisoners, etc.
• Maintains custody of prisoners’ private property.
• Maintains the safe and orderly operation of the County jail facility; monitors security cameras and door warning lights; screens and monitors visitors. Inspects all of inmates’ incoming and outgoing mail and telegrams.

This position performs a variety of paraprofessional technical and customer service functions supporting the Building Division. Incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining knowledge, skills, certification, and experience that meet the qualifications for and demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.  Responsibilities include interpreting policies and procedures relating to building and construction activities enforcing the building codes. This position is scheduled for forty (40) hours per week. 
 

JOB DUTIES

• Working knowledge of basic construction drawing and blueprint reading. 
• Working knowledge of office methods, procedures, and techniques; manual and automated filing systems; office equipment operation; business correspondence; record-keeping       practices; correct English usage; standard operating policies, procedures and administrative structure. 
• Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances related to    building plan checking, including basic zoning, grading, and flood zone requirements. 
• Working knowledge of principles and techniques of building inspection work. 
   

This position will perform a variety of responsible law enforcement and crime prevention work, including patrolling assigned areas, answering calls and complaints, investigating crimes, serving civil papers, and providing court room security; enforce all federal and state laws and local ordinances related to public safety and welfare.

JOB DUTIES

• Performs routine patrol duties, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the County; responding to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance; investigating disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, vehicle accidents and other crimes; checking buildings for physical security, etc.

• Administers first aid in emergency situations.

• Issues traffic citations.

• Serves warrants, subpoenas and civil documents.

• Apprehends and arrests suspects and violent persons; transports prisoners; seizes property and/or criminal evidence; interrogates suspects, witnesses and complainants; gathers and preserves evidence.

• Assists with County search and rescue operations.

• Prepares various reports on investigations, including arrest and unusual incidents observed.

• Assists with criminal investigations as required.

• Prepares case files; testifies and presents evidence in court.

• Works with other law enforcement agencies in matters related to the investigation of crimes and apprehension of offenders.

• May serve as special duty officer as assigned, including responsibilities such as serving on the narcotics task force, serving as Deputy Coroner, providing court security, serving as school resource officer, serving as K-9 handler, serving on gang task force, etc.

• Participates in other special projects and programs as assigned.

• Performs duties related to crime prevention and community relations.

These are seasonal positions, limited to 1,000 hours worked within a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) that receive no City benefits.  Job training is anticipated to begin the week of April 13, 2026 and this assignment will run through September 30, 2025 at the latest.  Shifts will average 7.5 hours per day, 5 days per week.  This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience working for one of the finest departments in the State.

This position is fully funded through the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MPWA) and will directly support the mission of wildfire preparedness and mitigation, and community safety.

THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael Fire Department is seeking customer service and public safety focused individuals to join the wildfire mitigation team. Under supervision, inspectors will perform a variety of wildfire prevention duties with a focus on one-on-one education via property wildfire risk evaluations.  The Inspector’s efforts will support resident compliance with City and State Fire codes.

The customer-service oriented positions will support the City’s and Marin Wildfire Fire Prevention Authorities (MWPA)’s goals. The ideal candidate will be able to connect and inspire individual action among our diverse community by explaining complex concepts in easy-to-understand ways.  Inspectors will utilize tablets and other technology to document findings and interactions in the field.

Our highly qualified candidate will be able to work effectively in small teams or independently and clearly communicate wildfire safety-related information to residents from various backgrounds.  We are looking for people who have sound judgment and can communicate effectively with others.  They will need to be able to follow both verbal and written instructions, engage effectively with the public and work harmoniously with our team. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following):    

• Perform defensible space inspections and wildfire risk evaluations in accordance with San Rafael Municipal Code 4.12.
• Investigates public and referred public agency complaints.
• Provide guidance to residents on suggested and required home hardening and defensible space strategies. 
• Provide residents with appropriate support resources and programs.
• Increase awareness, knowledge and actions implemented by individuals and communities to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires.
• Collects, enters, maintains, and disseminates data pertaining to fire prevention; reconciles reports, files and records.
• Composes letters and reports based on field notes.
• Collect and input data and images into electronic devices.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Communicate clearly and respectfully to residents and stakeholders.
• Learn and apply City and State Fire Codes and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
• Provide clear and concise written reports free of grammar and spelling errors.
• Utilize personal computers, tablets, and related software including the Microsoft Office Suite, mapping, and database tools.
• Independently conduct fire (defensible space) inspections.
• Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques.
• Be self-motivated, work independently to complete assigned duties and responsibilities in a timely manner.
• Interpret and explain fire prevention services, policies and procedures.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with stake holders to ensure that assigned fire prevention coordination efforts are successful.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:

• In accordance with State legal requirements, applicants must be at least 18 years old by the application filing deadline.
• Graduation from high school or equivalent and any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities in qualifying.
• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
• A background in customer service or public service.
• Ability to speak, write, and read Spanish is desired but not necessary.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS:

All City of San Rafael employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109).  Employment in the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.  Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

The Department of Public Works, Fleet Management Division is responsible for the management of the City’s fleet including the comprehensive inspection, maintenance, repair, acquisition, and disposal. The City’s vehicle and equipment fleet currently consists of over 2,700 assets.  

Fleet Management Division is recruiting to fill one (1) Automotive Equipment Specialist position. Reporting to the Senior Automotive Equipment Specialist, the Automotive Equipment Specialist is responsible for preparing vehicle and equipment specifications, and purchase requisitions. This position, depending on facility assignment, will require traveling, working various shift hours and overtime.  

Key responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:  

• Works directly with citywide departments to collect vehicle and/or equipment requirements and specifications  

• Prepares written specifications for the solicitation and purchase of vehicles and equipment.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Operator II/III position plays a key role in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the City’s wastewater treatment facilities. The successful candidate will be appointed at the Operator II or Operator III level based on qualifications and experience.

Under general direction, this position operates, monitors, and maintains the wastewater treatment plant, lift stations, trunk sewers, outfall, and related facilities. Responsibilities include adjusting treatment processes to meet NPDES permit requirements, utilizing SCADA systems to monitor and control plant operations, performing preventive maintenance on plant equipment, collecting and analyzing wastewater and sludge samples, and maintaining accurate operational records.

At the Operator III level, additional responsibilities may include advanced process optimization, technical leadership, administrative and reporting duties, CMMS oversight, contractor coordination, and providing support to or acting in the absence of the Chief Treatment Plant Operator. This position requires flexibility to work off-hour, weekend, holiday, and on-call shifts and to respond to emergency situations as needed.
