The Position

 
The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for entry-level Public Safety Dispatchers.  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Dispatchers receive and transmit emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio traffic as well as process communication reports, records, and radio logs, while maintaining
a high level of confidentiality.  Dispatchers may also support the Police Department by performing clerical tasks, training, assisting with fingerprinting, and being accountable for financial transactions.  This position is integral in supporting the goals and objectives of the City and Police Department.  

 

Examples of Duties

 

Essential Duties

• Receives and transmits emergency
  and non-emergency
  telephone and radio traffic.  

• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs.

• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records.

• Responsible for various Record Management System (RMS) entries, some of these include but are not limited to citations, warrants, subpoenas. 

• Responsible for accurate and timely entries into the California Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (CLETS), as well as, the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

• Maintains a high level of confidentiality.

• Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks:
  records entry, assisting in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and check transactions. 

• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

 

Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation. 
 
Education

 

• Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Additional related college course work or degree preferred.

Experience

 

• At least one (1) year of related work experience requiring alertness and independent judgment, but no previous public safety dispatch experience is required.

 

Certificates and Licenses

 

• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, Class C with a good driving record.

• Typing certificate issued within the last year verifying minimum typing speed of thirty-five (35) net words per minute with a maximum of nine (9) errors. Typing certificate must be submitted with application to be considered.  Online typing certificate permitted with application; formal test will be administered to final candidate.

• Completion within the last year of the POST Entry Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery with a preferred minimum
  score of 48 or above;
  or CritiCall Dispatch passing test results within a year of application date.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Training: High school graduate or equivalent qualification, and 30 semester units from an accredited college or university desired (not required)
 

Certification: Must pass a comprehensive physical examination, meeting the standards established by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST)
 

License: Possession and maintenance of a California Class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
 

Minimum requirements for lateral entry officers:

• Must meet all minimum requirements for entry level officer with the exception of written and agility examination requirements.
• Must possess a POST Basic Certificate.
• A minimum of one-year satisfactory past police patrol experience within the past three years.
• Must have no record of felony criminal convictions or misdemeanor convictions that could affect credibility as a witness in a court of law.
• Vision and hearing capabilities consistent with guidelines by POST and/or the City.
• Must be of good moral character to be determined by a thorough background investigation, which will be conducted under POST guidelines.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receive immediate supervision from higher level supervisory or management staff and from training staff at a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy.

             

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

• Attend a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy designed to provide an overview of the criminal justice system including knowledge of laws, police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid and physical fitness.

• Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

• At the time of application, all applicants must show proof of passing the PELLETB test with a minimum T-Score of 50 and successful completion of the WSTB test (physical agility).  These tests can be taken by visiting www.theacademy.ca.gov.  All testing information including practice tests can be located on the site.
• Free of any felony convictions.
• A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government Code Para. 1031).

THE POSITION

Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the Reserve Police Officer is a sworn position assigned to field operations to patrol for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations within the philosophy of community oriented policing.  Incumbents are normally expected to solve most work problems independently and to refer to supervisory personnel only those matters which involve policy decisions, technical questions and unusual problems at the entry level and make recommendations at the advanced level.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Enforces laws and regulations and apprehends law breakers
• Conducts crime investigations
• Patrols for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations
• Responds to radio messages or telephone instructions and investigates reported disorders or crimes
• Notes and reports complaints, accidents, offenses and damages to property
• Reports abandoned or damaged vehicles
• Directs traffic
• Makes arrests, issues citations and warnings
• Prepares reports on arrests and property impounded
• Inspects crime scenes and questions witnesses
• Analyzes clues and information related to criminal activities
• Reviews modus operandi of known criminals
• Reports on the progress of investigations and prepares assigned cases for court
• Serves warrants
• Appears in court to testify regarding arrests and other law enforcement activities

• Operates patrol vehicles
• Administers first aid or CPR when appropriate
• Develops cooperative working relationships and mutual aid agreements with other local public safety representatives
• Develops and maintains partnership building with the residential and business community as well as the other working departments within the Town of Colma
• Adheres to department rules, regulations, orders and procedures
• Exhibits and encourages behavior that is consistent with the Town’s risk management program and decreases risk of accident or injury to self, employees, residents, visitors and their property

The Woodland Police Department is staffed with 71 sworn officers, 18 professional employees, and 8 part-time temporary professional employees. The Position

The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for Public Safety Dispatchers (Lateral.)  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Dispatchers receive and transmit emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio traffic as well as process communication reports, records, and radio logs, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.  Dispatchers may also support the Police Department by performing clerical tasks, training, assisting with fingerprinting, and being accountable for financial transactions.  This position is integral in supporting the goals and objectives of the City and Police Department.  

 

Examples of Duties

 

Essential Duties

• Receives and transmits emergency telephone and radio traffic.  
• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs.
• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records.
• Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
• Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks: assisting in preparation of work schedules; training and evaluating performance of new employees; conducting training sessions; assisting in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and check transactions. 
• Plans, organizes, and directs dispatching and related activities on an assigned shift. This may include preparing schedules and prioritizing work; observing work performed by Dispatcher I employees to ensure compliance with standards; approving time off; conducting employee evaluations; and providing effective recommendations on personnel matters.
• Prepares and maintains training and procedure manuals.
• Maintains liaison with other Department Divisions, City Departments, and other law enforcement and emergency response agencies.
• Maintains various C.A.D and Record Management Files.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

 

• Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Additional related college course work or degree preferred.

Experience

 

• Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience performing duties similar to that of a Public Safety Dispatcher I.

Certificates and Licenses

 

• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, Class C with a good driving record.
• Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Intermediate Dispatch Certificate; an Advanced California POST Certificate is preferred.
