Position Duties

The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) full-time Parks Manager vacancy in the Parks Division at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo.

The total salary range for the Parks Manager classification is $143,860.08 - $175,309.68 annually. 

This salary range includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience. 

The City of San José’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department (PRNS) is seeking an innovative and results-driven Parks Manager to lead Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ) — the City’s flagship destination known for its blend of family recreation, wildlife conservation, and environmental education. 

The Parks Manager serves as the General Manager for Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ), providing strategic leadership and operational oversight for all facets of the park and zoo. This includes animal care and welfare, rides and attractions, entertainment programs, maintenance, guest services, food and beverage, business operations, education, and conservation programming. The position ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality experiences for guests, animals and staff while advancing the City’s goals of equity, stewardship, and sustainability. 
 

Key Responsibilities

Direct daily operations of HHPZ, including animal care, maintenance, attractions, guest services, security and public programming.  Oversee business operations such as admissions, concessions, memberships, and revenue programs to ensure fiscal sustainability and continuous improvement.  Lead and develop a diverse team of staff and supervisors, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation.  Develop and manage operating and capital budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships.  Plan and implement capital improvement projects, including animal exhibit renovations, infrastructure upgrades, and facility enhancements. 

 

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a strategic, innovative, and politically astute leader with experience managing complex park, zoo, or destination operations.

• Strong fiscal and business management skills, including experience with revenue generation, budgeting, and contracts. 
• Knowledge of zoo operations, animal care standards, and guest experience best practices. 
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with staff, partners, and the public. 
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver data-driven results in a dynamic environment. 
• Commitment to the City’s values of inclusion, sustainability, and community service.

• Strengthen the partnership with the Happy Hollow Foundation to support fundraising, conservation, and education initiatives. 
• Lead capital improvement projects that enhance guest experience, animal habitats, and park infrastructure. 
• Grow revenue-generating programs including memberships, concessions, and special events for fiscal sustainability. 
• Position HHPZ as a national leader in animal care, conservation, and nature-based education, maintaining HHPZ’s 35-plus years of accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

About Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ): This is a 16-acre amusement park and Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo located in San José, California. HHPZ is open year-round catering to families with children. It operates nine amusement park rides, showcases various endangered species, and operates one of the oldest classical puppet theaters in California, as well as offering many other playgrounds and attractions emphasizing play and imagination in a natural conservation setting. 

The Department is currently recruiting to fill one full-time benefited Zoo Keeper position at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. We are seeking a highly motivated, personable individual with strong leadership skills and innovative ideas to become part of a dynamic team of employees with a strong commitment to providing excellent service to our diverse community. 

The position performs work involving the care and feeding of zoo, domestic farm, and/or non-domestic animals and maintenance of enclosures, grounds and service areas; working with animals under all types of climatic conditions to prepare them for presentations, training, capture and restraint, basic husbandry, and behavioral enrichment. In addition, responding to general questions from the public regarding non-domestic and/or domestic animals.

Please note that schedules can vary every week or be on an “on call” basis depending on knowledge, training, and experience with specific animal routines. These positions will be required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays, during all climactic conditions as assigned and must have the ability to enter animal areas and perform physical work (including lifting objects up to 50 lbs.).

Applications are being accepted for the position of Community Resource Clerk (Recreation Leader III) with the City of South San Francisco. This is a non-benefited, part-time/hourly position.

THE POSITION 

The City of South San Francisco seeks customer service-oriented individuals to join the Community Resource Team at the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center. This position is shared between the Library Department and Parks and Recreation Department and works under the direction of the Community Resource Analyst. The Community Resource Clerk will typically be stationed at the lobby desks on the first and second floors of the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center at 901 Civic Campus Way in South San Francisco, however, may temporarily be assigned to other sites, or to represent the departments at special events. This position will provide a welcoming presence by greeting members of the public and responding to visitor inquiries to assist with wayfinding in the facility and sharing information about activities in the building as well as city and other local community resources.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal Community Resource Clerk possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills and will be comfortable working in a diverse community setting, providing customer service to community members of various ages, ethnicities, and abilities.  Candidates with bilingual skills are strongly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate can work independently as well as with a team, and can make quick, quality, and educated decisions, taking a proactive approach to deal with customer service issues. Skill in using a personal computer and associated applications is required. The ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is highly desirable. 
 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Assists in implementing the day-to-day operations at the Library | Parks and Recreation Center.
• Helps oversee use of the facility, ensuring appropriate security is maintained, policies and procedures are followed; appropriate equipment and materials are available, and building is operating efficiently.
• Registers participants in programs and assists patrons with Library or Parks and Recreation account inquiries.
• Performs typical service desk duties including but not limited to patron registration and account management, checking in/out materials, utilization of self-check equipment, assisting patrons with fines and fees, payments and placing reserves, and answering patron questions and requests.
• Maintain the posting of current promotional materials, such as flyers, brochures, guides, and other printed materials.
• Assists in coordinating the scheduling of classes, activities, meetings, events, and rentals in the facility.
• Assists patrons in using and locating library materials and equipment; explains library services, rules, and procedures.
• Works cooperatively with staff, parents, children, and other public and private sector employees and volunteers; coordinates with appropriate agencies to ensure that necessary services are provided to clients.
• Provides customer service in person, by telephone, and electronically.
• Performs general housekeeping duties related to the organization of materials and equipment in the common areas of the facility.
• Prepares for programs, including set up and take down; organization of required supplies.
• May be responsible for opening and/or closing the facility according to established procedures.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: Minimum of 18 years of age. One year of paid or unpaid work experience involving customer service.

Training:  Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Licenses/Certificates: All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.

•  Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a current First-Aid and CPR certificate within the first 12 months from date of hire.

GENERAL INFO 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Leader I/II positions provide essential support to recreation programs and services by performing custodial tasks, event setup and teardown, program support, and minor maintenance duties at various facilities, including parks and community centers. This temporary, part-time position requires working an average of 15 to 20 hours per week, but no more than 999 hours per fiscal year total. The roles involve ensuring the facilities are clean, safe, and operational while delivering excellent customer service. Performs other duties as assigned.

UNIVERSAL POSITION DUTIES (Illustrative purposes only) 

• Organize, inventory, and maintain facility materials and equipment. 
• Supervise teams/groups of other program staff or volunteers under the direction of Supervisor. 
• Assist in organizing and supervising recreational programs in any one or more of the following areas: children, adults, senior citizens, and participants with special needs at playgrounds, community centers, and other recreational areas. 
• Open, close, and secure facilities, including locking gates and setting alarms. 
• Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment according to event/program requirements. 
• Perform light maintenance and cleaning tasks to ensure facility safety and upkeep. 
• Enforce policies, maintain discipline, and provide customer service to patrons. 
• Monitor and report facility issues and potential hazards. 
• Assist with special events and activities as needed. 
• Respond to and resolve patron inquiries and complaints. 
• Participate in safety training and emergency procedures. 
• Monitor facility rentals and provide customer service as needed. 
• Lift and move, routinely and regularly, up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifting and/or moving over 60 pounds. Duties also include repetitive pushing; pulling; crawling; climbing; and prolonged periods of standing, lifting above the shoulders, working off a ladder, manual dexterity, and maintaining good vision and hearing. 
• Perform other duties as assigned. 

SERVICE DESK (Illustrative purposes only) 

• Greet patrons, answer and direct calls, and provide information on programs, rentals, schedules, rules, and policies. 
• Open/close the facility and monitor for safety, cleanliness, and proper use. 
• Check daily facility schedules and rental setup requirements. 
• Use computer systems for data entry. 
• Assist patrons with registration processing and POS transactions. 
• Handle office tasks including mail distribution, shipments, and deliveries. 
• Support office inventory management for supplies and equipment.

• Ability to obtain a current California Food Handler Card. 
• Ability to obtain a current Driver’s License and clean driving record is preferred. 

Tools and Equipment Used 

• Various hand tools and cleaning equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a recreation or community center facility. 
• Operation of city vehicle.

A conviction history will not necessarily disqualify an applicant from appointment. Determinations are made on a case-by-case basis with consideration given to the nature and recency of the conviction and relationship to job duties. All City standards must be met before the final appointment is made.
