This internship is offered as part of a Regional Internship Partnership designed to introduce current students and recent college graduates to local municipal government. The City of Saratoga participates in this program with the goal of connecting a diverse student population to public sector work, providing meaningful hands-on experience that supports both personal and professional growth.

Position Description

The City Manager Department has one part-time, paid summer internship opportunity (up to 20 hours per week). This is a single position that provides exposure across multiple functions within the department, giving the selected intern broad exposure to municipal operations rather than a narrow focus on one specialty. The internship runs for up to 12 weeks, and the start and end dates can be arranged around the selected candidate’s college summer break schedule.

The workload will balance supporting daily municipal operations with contributing to special projects. The intern will receive assignments and work direction from staff within the department.  

Administrative Analyst. The intern will support the planning and delivery of community programs such as the Youth in Government program and City-led events. Duties include scheduling, vendor coordination, on-site event assistance, research on municipal best practices, and data tracking.

City Clerk. The intern will assist with the preparation and coordination of City Council and commission meetings, including agenda compilation, minutes, and document management. Responsibilities also include supporting public records requests and ensuring compliance with open meeting laws and transparency requirements.

Public Affairs and Community Engagement Officer. The intern will help draft newsletters, website content, and social media posts, and will support event promotion, marketing materials, and community outreach campaigns. Additional work may include contributing to the annual State of the City report and video content produced with City Council.

Protective Services Workers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of children and families. They engage in case planning, risk assessments, and deliver vital support services.

The City of Foster City is seeking energetic, self-motivated, and organized candidates for the Deputy City Clerk position in the Communications/City Clerk Department. Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview (weighted 80%) and a written exercise (weighted 20%). An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner.

Possession of Certification as Building Official by International Code Council (ICC) is required within one (1) year of appointment. Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer in the State of California is desirable.

THE POSITION OBJECTIVES/GOALS

1. Learn about and reinvigorate the City's "The Food Front" food and agricultural economic development campaign. Help with scheduling key stakeholder meetings, running campaigns online, refreshing and improving webpages, and planning engagement events.

2. Lead community and civic engagement efforts, from supporting City Council Members with outreach to preparing materials for anything from possible Prop. 218 fee proposals to education around public programs. 

3. Become familiar with the City's multimedia platforms and help create content, including vertical videos, podcasts, employee highlights, promotions for Community Services programs, events, and initiatives, traditional door to door outreach materials, and more.

4. Research and observe the rollout of SB707 and assist staff with implementing its provisions related to participation and outreach.

5. Analyze performance data and existing marketing strategies used by the City, focusing on campaign objectives, target audiences, and content types.

6. Define and support community engagement efforts and highlight their importance within local government services.

7. Propose innovative and inclusive campaign ideas tailored to local demographics and community needs.

8. Support ADA compliance efforts by reviewing and improving accessibility of social media and website content.

The Fellow will propose recommendations to improve leak detection, streamline response protocols, strengthen reporting systems, and reduce water waste supporting long-term water conservation goals.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Ideal Candidate will be interested in sustainability, municipal operations and public policy. They will also be analytical and detail-oriented, preferably with experience working with large datasets. They will be comfortable cleaning, organizing, and interpreting utility data. An individual skilled in Excel and/or data tools such as GIS, Power BI, Tableau, R, or Python will excel in this role.

The Ideal Candidate will be able to translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations and communicate clearly with internal and external customers (facilities staff, public works teams, and sustainability leadership).

Perform a five-year longitudinal analysis of municipal water usage across City facilities to identify consumption trends, seasonal variability, anomalies, and high-risk locations for potential water loss.

Assess the City’s current leak and over-usage tracking mechanisms, including data collection methods, alert generation protocols, routing procedures, and response timelines to determine system effectiveness and gaps.

3. Identify Operational Inefficiencies and Risk Factors
Diagnose procedural, technological, or communication breakdowns contributing to delayed responses, excessive water use, or undetected leaks, and quantify associated operational and financial impacts where feasible.

4. Develop Strategic Recommendations for System Improvement
Propose data-driven recommendations to enhance leak detection capabilities, streamline interdepartmental response workflows, strengthen reporting infrastructure, and improve accountability measures.

5. Advance Long-Term Water Conservation Outcomes
Deliver a final analytical report and implementation roadmap that supports the City’s broader sustainability and drought-resilience goals, ensuring recommendations are actionable, scalable, and aligned with municipal resource constraints.

$20.00 - $25.00 / hour dependent on experience.

The pay cycle is bi-weekly.  No other benefits compensations are provided except for worker's compensation coverage and sick leave.  Employees must contribute 1.45% of their salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan under Federal Law.

ABOUT THE POSITION

If you are looking to gain hands-on experience while making a difference in the community, the City of Gilroy is currently recruiting for a motivated and detail-oriented college summer intern to work in the Human Resources and Risk Management Department. 

Throughout the internship, you will gain exposure to employee benefits and incentive programs, recruitment and hiring processes, payroll administration, labor agreements, HR compliance, and policy development. You’ll build practical, real-world HR experience in a fast-paced, collaborative, and supportive workplace. Additionally, you will gain hands-on experience with NeoGov, a leading applicant tracking system used by public agencies nationwide, as well as Tyler Munis HRIS and payroll systems. WORK SCHEDULE 

This internship can start as early as May 26, 2026, and end as late as September 30, 2026. This paid internship is offered at 15 – 25 hours per week with flexible scheduling. 

The official start and end date of the internship will be determined at the time of hire. Work hours are generally Monday – Friday between 8:00am – 5:00pm.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Provide support for recruitment activities, including job postings and interview coordination.
• Assist in supporting the preparation of the City’s annual Health Fair and wellness initiatives.
• Assist with tasks related to the Employee Appreciation Committee.
• Assist with employee wellness newsletter and other activities.
• Prepare and/or update employee safety program materials.
