PART-TIME LIBRARIAN I/LIBRARY ASSISTANT I

The Mill Valley Public Library is looking for a part-time librarian who is passionate about public service, shows initiative, and has a strong work ethic to work the adult reference desk. This is a great opportunity to get experience in reference work and assisting patrons with their needs. You will work in a very fast-paced, collaborative environment.  

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF HOURS:

Will work at least one shift per week with additional sub hours available. Applicant must be able to work Saturday (9:15am - 5:15pm) and/or Sunday (11:30am - 5pm) and one weeknight until 8pm. 

Salary: $24.77 - $41.04/hour depending on experience and education.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Staffing the Adult Reference Desk is the primary responsibility of this position. A knowledge of literature or the desire to read widely is essential in making book recommendations and understanding types of computers and assisting with technology troubleshooting is crucial. The Mill Valley Library is fast-paced and innovative; the person in this position needs to learn new skills quickly, adapt easily to change, be detail-oriented, and patron focused. Many part-time staff are cross trained to work in other Library departments as needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Provide reference services including readers’ advisory. 
• Provide excellent customer service to all patrons with consistency and in line with library policies.
• Assist patrons troubleshooting technological issues on both library computers and personal devices.
• Help with programming as needed.
• Additional duties based on interests and demonstrated quality of work.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

SALARIES:
Library Assistant I: $31.49 - $35.19 hourly  
Library Assistant II: $33.22 - $41.54 hourly

Qualifications

Experience and Education: 

Qualified candidates possess any combination of education and experience that would likely provide them with the required knowledge, skills, and ability.

• Library Assistant I: No specific education or experience is required.

• Library Assistant II: One year of public contact and support experience in a library.

Knowledge of:

• Excellent customer service practices.

• Modern library services and functions.

• Internet searching skills.

• Computers and technology.

• Correct written and oral English usage.

• Basic math.

Skill/Ability to:

• Deal tactfully and effectively with a wide variety of individuals.

• Interpret and apply library procedures and policies.

• Use, and teach patrons to use, a changing variety of technologies.

• Plan, promote, and execute library programming.

• Be flexible in responding to frequent change.

• Direct and instruct volunteers.

PROGRAM LEADER (Youth Services/Kids’ Night Out/Kids Day Out Programs)

Salary Range: $17.37 to $23.15/hour (DOE)

Part-time temporary, non-benefitted position; 10 hours per month in Kids’ Night Out Program and Bi-monthly Friday night availability (6-11 pm) required. GENERAL DUTIES

Under the general supervision of the Youth Program Coordinator, Youth Services staff is responsible for supervision and safety within the bi-monthly Kids’ Night Out and Kids Day Out Program, including implementing a variety of crafts, games and activities for youth ages 5 to 11.  As a Youth Services staff member, you will:

• Gain experience leading arts, crafts, games, and activities;
• Serve as a mentor and role model to youth;

The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about working with the public and have a genuine interest in coaching and serving as positive role models in their community. • Conducting fieldwork and research related to public art.
• Creating and managing social media content and scheduling to promote arts initiatives. 
• Supporting community outreach efforts through special event participation, flyer creation and distribution, and in-person engagement.

Description 

Under the general direction from the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Specialist – Enrichment is responsible to act as a liaison to the Department’s flourishing enrichment (after school) program and ensure the smooth operation of programming for preschool and elementary aged classes both on and off-site. This includes the elementary-aged afterschool programs Supervised Play at Old Mill Elementary School and Center of Play at the Mill Valley Community Center. This position requires a high level of customer service, attention to detail, marketing prowess, evaluation and oversight of programs, independent contractors, and part-time staff, and the ability to build relationships throughout the community. The Recreation Specialist- Enrichment will assist other staff in the Youth and Teens Division for seasonal programs as needed. 

The ideal candidate will have significant experience working in elementary aged programs, ideally in a fast-paced and dynamic setting. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in early childhood education, recreation, or a related field with a minimum of two years of experience in delivering kindergarten, elementary and/or youth programming, etc. is preferred. 

Must be 18 years of age or older to apply for this position. 

NOTE: This is a part-time, non-benefitted position for the Mill Valley Arts and Recreation Department.  

DEFINITION: Communicate with participants, families, instructors, staff and elementary school sites to coordinate class schedules, registrations, and program needs for the TK-5th grade After School Enrichment programs. Hours are approximately Monday-Friday, 12:30pm-5:30pm. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 

• Facilitates recreation activities for specific age group: Transitional Kindergarten through 5th Grade. 

• Organizes, implements, directs, supervises and/or promotes specific programs and activities. 

• Processes program payments promptly and thoroughly. 

• Programs enrichment classes for each season (Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer).  

• Participates in the preparation and administration of assigned program budget. 

• Works with local School District, PTAs, and community groups in developing, promoting, and providing programs and activities. 

• Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 

• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively and professionally with schools, staff, parents, and children. 

• Monitors the day-to-day operations of the programs, including making site visits, handling and resolving complaints not requiring the attention of a supervisor and ensuring that programs and events have required materials, staff, and supplies. 

• Assists in the evaluation of programming including conducting customer satisfaction surveys and analyzing reports on program effectiveness. 

• Enforces safety and operating procedures and provides for maintenance needs including compliance with health and safety codes. 

• Creation and development of new programs, as needed. 

• Accurately maintain attendance records. 

• The ability to speak English clearly and understandably. 

• Perform related duties as required. 

• Must be able to lift 50lbs.  

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education, training, and experience, which likely provides the required knowledge and abilities.
