a) POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB): This exam must be completed in less than 2.5 hours, and it must be passed with a minimum T-Score of 42. To schedule for the exam, visit the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium's website at: www.theacademy.ca.gov.  

 

b) National Testing Network (NTN) Corrections REACT Exam: Passing scores accepted for this exam are Video Judgement Test 65% or higher; Reading 75% or higher; and Count 70% or higher. This examination is administered directly by the National Testing Network, and it may be taken virtually or in person at testing sites nationwide. PELLETB: Applicants can complete the PELLETB exam at the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium. The areas covered by the test include spelling, vocabulary, clarity, reading and CLOZE (use contextual clues to complete a passage that contains missing words). Applicants are responsible for contacting South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium and self-enrolling in the required written exam. National Testing Network (NTN) Corrections REACT Examination (Online option): Applicants can register with NTN and schedule for the written examination by visitingwww.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select “Find Jobs”, then select “Corrections Jobs” and sign up for [San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office]. You must take the examination first before applying. Candidates who have already completed the National Testing Network (NTN) examination may submit their results through NTN to our agency. The exam must have been taken within one year of your submitted application. Candidates must meet the minimum passing scores. Acceptance of NTN exam scores are subject to verification with National Testing Network.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

Education: 
A high school graduate or passing the General Education Development (GED) test or other high school equivalency test approved by CDE, or completion of at least 30 college units from an accredited or approved institution to apply.

Oral Interview: Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a panel interview with the Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Bureau.

 

Physical Agility Exam: Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a physical agility test which may include, but is not limited to, the following events: weight drag, obstacle course, fence/wall climb and 1.5 mile run completed in 15 minutes or less.

THE TRAINEE POSITION:

Is designed to attend a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy and receive the academic and physical training resulting in graduation and certification required for appointment to the classification of Police Officer.

This classification is structured for the purpose of becoming a sworn police officer.  Police Officer Trainees are hired into this position for the period prior and during the time they are assigned to a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy.  Prior to performing a variety of professional law enforcement duties which include police patrol, investigation, traffic regulation, and related law enforcement activities. 

Upon successful completion of training at the academy and upon the availability of a Police Officer position, Police Officer Trainees will be sworn in and appointed to the classification of Police Officer at the beginning of the following pay period.  

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Attend a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy designed to provide an overview of the criminal justice system including knowledge of laws, police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid and physical fitness.

Receive training to develop an awareness of Police Department functions, as well as the responsibilities of Police Officers and how those responsibilities relate to field operations.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to:

Successfully complete a POST-Basic Law Enforcement Academy including classroom instruction, physical agility and use of firearms.

Learn proper police procedures and methods.

Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places.

Think and act quickly in emergencies and to judge situations and people accurately.

Understand and interpret laws and regulations.

Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive written reports.

Become proficient in self-defense techniques.

Become proficient in the care and use of firearms.

Follow oral and written instructions.

Deal courteously and effectively with the general public.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade (High School Diploma).  Completion of 30 semester units from an accredited college or university (60 units or more is preferred).
• Must show proof of passing the PELLETB test with a minimum T-Score of 48
• Successful completion of the WSTB test (physical agility). 

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Driver’s License.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

• Free of any felony convictions.
• A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government Code Para. 1031).
• Age, not less than 21 years at time of appointment.
• Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.
• Must pass a background investigation.
• Meet all regulatory requirements for becoming a Peace Officer with a California P.O.S.T agency.

Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

Hiring Bonus

Up to 10 Lateral Police Officers hired into the classification of Police Officer for the City of Fremont will qualify for a new hire bonus of up to $100,000. 

• $10,000: Paid on the first paycheck following the Police Officer’s hire with the City of Fremont.
• $10,000: Paid upon completion of the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program.
• $15,000: Paid upon successful completion of probation.
• $15,000: Paid upon one (1) full year following completion of probation.
• $15,000: Paid upon two (2) years following completion of probation.

Police Recruit Trainee:  High school diploma or legal equivalent (GED) and completion of sixty (semester) college units or ninety (quarter) college units; must be eligible to attend a State of California POST-certified Basic Police Academy; PELLETB T-score of 48 points or higher (dated within one year of application) OR an NTN score for the written exam requirement; AND a WSTB score of 384 points or higher plus 1.5 mile run under 14 minutes.  WSTB results MUST be attached to application for consideration.   NTN scores can be submitted through their website and select the City of San Leandro as the recipient OR attach PELLETB results to application.

Salary Range for Police Recruit Trainees and Police Academy Attendees:  $6,863 - $8,342/month plus generous benefits

Police Academy Graduate: High school diploma or legal equivalent (GED) and completion of sixty (semester) college units or ninety (quarter) college units; and a valid State of California POST Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certificate dated within 24 months of application submission.  Your State of California POST Academy Certificate MUST be attached to application for consideration.

Police Officer – Lateral:  High school diploma or legal equivalent (GED) and completion of sixty (semester) college units or ninety (quarter) college units; and either a valid State of California POST Basic Certificate and currently work as a Police Officer in a California POST agency OR have worked in the job classification within one (1) year of application, and can show proof of successful completion of the California POST agency-specific field training program.  Qualifying documentation MUST be attached to application for consideration.

Salary Range for Police Academy Graduates and Police Officer – Laterals:  $9,180 - $12,302/month

Police Academy Graduate and Police Officer – Lateral benefits include but are not limited to:

• Shift Differentials of 3% - 5%
• Specialty Assignments 5% (K-9, Traffic, Criminal Investigations, and Professional Standards)
• Educational Incentives (4% for AA or Intermediate POST; up to 8% for BA or Advanced POST)
• Additional Differentials for Bilingual, FTOs, Crime Scene Technician, Drone Operator, Field Technician, Crisis Intervention Training, and Longevity
• Holiday-in-Lieu Pay of 7%
• 1.75% matching contribution of base pay to pretax 457 account
