The City of Brisbane is currently accepting applications for Recreation Leaders. Under the direct supervision of a Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Leader implements and facilitates well-rounded programs in youth after-school programs, pre-school programs, day camps, sports leagues, and special events at designated recreation facilities. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only):

• Initiates and leads defined youth recreation and sports programs.
• Maintains discipline and observes the overall well-being of the participants and the program.
• Plans various youth recreational and educational programs appropriate for the age and skill level of the participants.
• Leads, teaches, and coaches sports to youth or organized teams.
• Observes required safety precautions.
• Maintains attendance and activity records.
• Maintains open lines of communication with participants and/or their parents.
• Makes recommendations regarding youth recreation programs.
• Attends staff meetings, in-service training, and conferences, as required.

The City of Brisbane is currently recruiting certified Swim Instructors for our beautiful outdoor aquatic facility. Swim Instructors instruct organized aquatic safety and swim classes with the safety standards and procedures set by the American Red Cross. Swim Instructors may also serve as Lifeguards (if certified), whose duties include patrolling and watching the activities in and around the community swimming pool, enforcing regulations to prevent accidents, and rescuing swimmers in distress. SALARY AND HOURS: $20.61 - $21.64 – $22.73 – $23.87 - $25.06 per hour (Part-time position - No other benefits are offered. Initial appointments are generally made at the first step of this five-step scale). Hours will range from 20-40 hours per week.

NOTE: This is a part-time, non-benefitted position with the Mill Valley Arts and Recreation Department starting in September 2026. Approximately 15-20 hours per week; must not exceed 1000 hours in the fiscal year. 

DEFINITION: Under general supervision from Preschool Instructor(s) and the Recreation Supervisor, the preschool aide assists in planning, organizing, and implementing preschool programming for children ages 2-5 years old in a range of classes from introductory drop-off preschool classes to Kindergarten preparedness preschool classes. Program hours are M-F PM 8:30am – 1:00pm. Approximately 20– 23 hours a week. Preschool aides must be willing and able to both take direction from the Preschool Instructor and work independently when fulfilling tasks. Substitute and on-call positions also available.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assists in the development, coordination, planning, implementing and supervising the day-to-day activities, themes and special events for an ongoing preschool program.

• Create and maintain a safe, nurturing, and creative environment.

• Supervise and engage preschool students during preschool program hours.

• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, and children.

• Maintain registration, attendance, and activity records; ensure the proper pick-up/drop-off of children. 

• Encourage good behavior, appropriate manners, read books and engage with all preschool students. 

• Implement and lead appropriate activities for preschool-aged children.

• Possess strong leadership skills in one or more of the following areas: art, crafts, sports, drama, cooking.

• Motivate children by example; create and maintain a positive environment for all. 

• Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

• Practice proper hygiene, with self and children, to deter the spread of disease (colds, flu, etc).

• Render first aid in case of minor injuries.

• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

• The ability to speak English clearly and understandably.

• Perform related duties as required.

• Must be able to lift 50lbs.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education, training, and experience, which likely provides the required knowledge and abilities.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must pass a pre-placement fingerprint review. Candidate must provide a TB negative test result document. Candidates must possess a current CPR/AED and First Aid certificate and be comfortable calling 911 in an emergency.

Summary Description

Under immediate supervision performs semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work assigned to the streets division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level class in the Street Maintenance Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Street Maintenance Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or non directly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Handle complaints and answer questions from the public.
2. Remove blight and illegal dumps from city property such as parks, right of ways, roadways, alleys, walkways, sidewalks and refuse disposal. 
3. Remove debris, shrubbery, brush, trash, tires, appliances, electronics, and miscellaneous items.
4. Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
5. Abates graffiti.
6. Maintain logs of daily activities.
7. Assist in other areas as needed.
8. Perform related duties as required.
9. Repair and replace street surfaces, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters including back filling trenches and evacuations.
10. Perform the maintenance, repair, construction, and installation work of streets, storm drain, parking lots, street lights, traffic striping, and traffic control signs and signals.
11. Remove hazards from the roadway and other public rights of way.
12. Operate a variety of motorized equipment and specialized maintenance equipment.
13. Perform repaving, patching, overlaying, chuck hole, and crack sealing repair of asphalt.
14. Perform underground service alert locating, marking and notification.
15. Lay out and install traffic signs and pavement markings.
16. Repair and maintain storm drain lift stations.
17. Conduct traffic count surveys.
18. Maintain storm detention ponds, including cleaning, repairing, and spraying weeds.
19. Respond to hazardous materials spills.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of maintenance and repair activities related to area of assignment.

Common tools, materials, and motorized vehicles and equipment used in assigned area of responsibility.

The repair and maintenance of pumps and valves.

City street system repair and maintenance.

Basic mathematical principles.

Safe work practices and policies.

Techniques and procedures in basic carpentry, metal, masonry, painting, mechanical and electrical work.

Ability to:

Work with the variety of tools related to public works maintenance.

Learn to safely operate a variety of maintenance equipment.

Perform heavy manual labor.

Perform semi-skilled maintenance duties.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Read and understand schematic diagrams.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
