About this Role 

The Entry-Level Police Officer position is an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in beginning a meaningful career in law enforcement. This position does not require any prior law enforcement experience. Selected candidates will receive full compensation while attending the Police Academy and participating in the Field Training Program. Qualifications 

• High school diploma or equivalent (2-year or 4-year degree preferred). 
• Must be at least 21 years of age. 
• No felony convictions. 
• U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Alien eligible and applied for citizenship. 
• Valid California Driver’s License. 
• Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 48 on the PELLETB and 320 on the WTSB within the past 12 months and pass the 1.5-mile run.

The City realizes the diversity of the community and therefore upon approval, the City pays officers a bilingual stipend. Our officers continually strive to be the best and achieve high standards; they receive a 5% incentive for achieving their Intermediate POST certificate and 10% incentive for achieving their advanced certificate. Starting September 1, 2024, Menlo Park police officers with at least one year of local service are eligible for longevity pay based on their total years as a California peace officer. Credited time includes all years served in Menlo Park plus half of any years served at other California agencies.

The City has new desktop and laptop computers in place for employees. The City already has Crime Analysis and Traffic Analysis software systems in place. A new handheld citations system for traffic has recently been launched. The City also implemented a citywide GIS system, document imaging system, and Intranet, which are available to all staff members. Additionally, we have placed laptops in all patrol cars in order to facilitate timely report writing and response to calls for service.

Out-of-State Candidates:

• The California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) will conduct an evaluation of all out-of-state training.

The Position

 
The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for entry-level Public Safety Dispatchers.  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Dispatchers receive and transmit emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio traffic as well as process communication reports, records, and radio logs, while maintaining
a high level of confidentiality.  Dispatchers may also support the Police Department by performing clerical tasks, training, assisting with fingerprinting, and being accountable for financial transactions.  This position is integral in supporting the goals and objectives of the City and Police Department.  

 

Examples of Duties

 

Essential Duties

• Receives and transmits emergency
  and non-emergency
  telephone and radio traffic.  

• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs.

• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records.

• Responsible for various Record Management System (RMS) entries, some of these include but are not limited to citations, warrants, subpoenas. 

• Responsible for accurate and timely entries into the California Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (CLETS), as well as, the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

• Maintains a high level of confidentiality.

• Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks:
  records entry, assisting in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and check transactions. 

• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education

• At least one (1) year of related work experience requiring alertness and independent judgment, but no previous public safety dispatch experience is required.

 

Certificates and Licenses

 

• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, Class C with a good driving record.

• Typing certificate issued within the last year verifying minimum typing speed of thirty-five (35) net words per minute with a maximum of nine (9) errors. Typing certificate must be submitted with application to be considered.  Online typing certificate permitted with application; formal test will be administered to final candidate.

• Completion within the last year of the POST Entry Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery with a preferred minimum
  score of 48 or above;
  or CritiCall Dispatch passing test results within a year of application date.

The City of Sebastopol is looking for a respectful, compassionate, empathetic Police Officer Trainee. The selected candidate must be currently enrolled or enrolled at a future date as a self-sponsored recruit in a certified Peace Officer Standards & Training Council (P.O.S.T.) Police Academy. The Police Officer Trainee is a non-sworn, training-level classification requiring no prior law enforcement experience. The incumbent performs a variety of entry-level police support duties in a learning capacity. The selected candidate will assist and observe Police Officers and civilian police personnel.

The successful candidate will attend the Police Academy to obtain a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate of Completion, and perform related work which may require public contact but not the enforcement of laws. Police Officer Trainees attend a POST certified Police Academy, which follows a standardized curriculum in order to provide them with basic training in various aspects of policing, many of which are prescribed by law and/or statute.

The Police Academy training is designed to provide the candidate the necessary skillsets to prepare them for consideration for promotion to a probationary Police Officer position within the City and begin the Sebastopol Police Department’s Field Training Officer program. Attendance and successful completion of a Police Academy is a legal requirement to be hired as a Police Officer within the State of California and is a requirement for a City of Sebastopol Police Officer Trainee to be considered for promotion to probationary Police Officer with the City of Sebastopol.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the Reserve Police Officer is a sworn position assigned to field operations to patrol for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations within the philosophy of community oriented policing.  Incumbents are normally expected to solve most work problems independently and to refer to supervisory personnel only those matters which involve policy decisions, technical questions and unusual problems at the entry level and make recommendations at the advanced level.
