The City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Department is looking for highly qualified, experienced Community Services Coordinators

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to enhance the quality of life and strengthen the bonds of community by providing an appropriate mix of safe, well-maintained and well-designed parks, open spaces, and community center facilities that are accessible for all residents; provide enriching leisure opportunities for all age groups; and to preserve and protect the City’s natural resources, including its urban forest, public open spaces, and landscaped medians and islands.

The Community Services Coordinator is a vital position in the Recreation Division providing outstanding program delivery and service.  The Recreation Division offers a variety of recreation activities, including preschool programs; senior programs; aquatics; dance & fitness; music, fine arts & crafts; special events; sports; mobile recreation; camps and after-school programs.  We are seeking a motivated candidate to join our diverse and passionate team dedicated to providing exceptional public service.

There are currently eight Coordinator assignments within the Recreation Division:

• Athletics Program Coordinator
• Aquatics / Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Program Coordinator
• Senior Center Program Coordinator
• Special Events & Mobile Recreation Coordinator
• Youth Services Coordinator (2 positions)
• Contract Classes Program Coordinator (2 positions)

The Position

The Community Services Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating a specific program area within the Recreation Division.  This assignment is typically a more defined program area that is narrower in size or scope than those assigned to Supervisors.  Coordinators excel at the following:

• Instruct and lead specialized recreation and human services activities requiring leadership in a structured environment;
• Provide activities and general facility supervision and control at a community recreation center or special use facility;
• Coordinate, develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services;
• Perform office, administrative, public information and activity intake responsibilities;
• Assist in preparing program facilities for structured program activities and special events.

The Community Services Coordinator receives general supervision from higher-level recreation positions and may exercise functional and technical supervision over lower level and part-time recreation personnel and volunteers.

Summer Day Camps

Looking for individuals who are passionate about making a difference and having fun outdoors! If entering your senior year of high school, are in college or beyond, this could be a perfect fit. Our five all-day summer camps run from June 15 to August 14, with staff training beginning June 8. Serving children ages 4-12 at multiple locations, these positions serve as role models to youth campers throughout the Conejo Valley, leading arts and crafts, recreation games, swimming, hiking and more!

Locations throughout Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park

Weekdays; hours vary between 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Positions: Camp Director, Senior Camp Counselor, Camp Counselor

Work with a variety of age groups teaching classes and assisting with special events

Qualifications Summary

Camp Directors- 30 college units completed preferred, with at least 1,500 hours of related experience
Senior Camp Counselor- 15 college units completed preferred, 500 hours of related experience preferred
Recreation Leader- 15 college units completed preferred, 500 hours of related experience preferred
Camp Counselors- High School Diploma (or GED), 250 hours of related experience preferred
 

Successful candidates must pass Department of Justice fingerprint and
Tuberculosis (TB) screening clearances prior to the start of employment.  

Description

The Town of Colma Recreation Services Department is currently accepting applications for Recreation Leaders for Summer 2026.  The Recreation Department provides programs and activities for Colma residents of all ages ranging from infants to seniors. Program elements include fitness, enrichment, cultural events, special events, sporting events, trips, and community events. It is the goal of the Recreation Department to offer a balanced program ensuring all elements are offered to all age groups throughout the year. This is a part-time position. Hours will range from 20-37 hours per week.

This position is under direct supervision of the Recreation Coordinator. Leaders will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing the Summer Day Camp at Sterling Park.

PROGRAM LEADER (Youth Services/Kids’ Night Out/Kids Day Out Programs)

Salary Range: $17.37 to $23.15/hour (DOE)

Part-time temporary, non-benefitted position; 10 hours per month in Kids’ Night Out Program and Bi-monthly Friday night availability (6-11 pm) required. Additional shifts are available on San Ramon Unified School District days off school, during recreation pop ups, and special events. (not-to-exceed 950 hours per fiscal year)

GENERAL DUTIES

Under the general supervision of the Youth Program Coordinator, Youth Services staff is responsible for supervision and safety within the bi-monthly Kids’ Night Out and Kids Day Out Program, including implementing a variety of crafts, games and activities for youth ages 5 to 11.  As a Youth Services staff member, you will:

• Gain experience leading arts, crafts, games, and activities;
• Serve as a mentor and role model to youth;
• Learn to work as part of a team and lead activities;
• Acquire skills to safely and appropriately supervise youth in a staff-to-youth ratio environment.
• Assist with recreation pop ups and special events
• Other duties as assigned

Specific to Youth Services:

• Plan and execute duties related to special interest classes, school-year and seasonal programs, and special events.
• Serve as a role model and advocate for youth.
• Effectively facilitate and/or lead small and large groups of youth.
• Communicate effectively with youth and their parents.
• Willing and available to work flexible hours as needed.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Prior to the start of employment, applications must provide proof of authorization to work in the United States, current (negative) TB test results, and successfully pass a background check (Live Scan).

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, provide personal fitness training to clients requesting service; maintain personal schedule at the front desk; enforce all rules and regulations pertaining to the safety and well being of all patrons; keep fitness floor tidy and clean. Perform related work as required, may include light cleaning and janitorial.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Train clients safely according to current industry standards and training.
• Offer and conduct free fitness floor orientations to new customers during Fitness Floor shifts.
• Learn basic operation instruction for fitness equipment and teach these techniques to visitors. Provide corrective feedback and proper technique.
• Maintain certain class records and reports as required.
• Ensuring that a safe and healthy environment exists for exercising. Monitor guests’ activities in the fitness center.
• Enforce all rules and regulations.
• Recognize and respond professionally to emergencies, provide care as indicated under the scope of training.
• Assume assigned duties connected with care and maintenance of the facility.
• Provide basic maintenance, equipment care.
• Deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city employees, other agencies, and the general public.
• Actively attend and participate in required staff training and in-service drills.
• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• The ability to speak English clearly and understandably.
• Perform related duties as required.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Certified Personal Trainer required. Additionally, combination of education, training, and experience, that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must pass a pre-placement fingerprint review. The employee must satisfactorily complete an evaluation period before obtaining regular status. Candidates must possess a current CPR/AED and First Aid certificate and be comfortable calling 911 in an emergency.

Description: 

Under the general direction from the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Specialist – Camp is responsible for assisting the Recreation Supervisor to oversee the department’s Mill Valley Camp summer program and ensure the smooth operation of programming for Preschool to 6th Grade camp programs on-site. This position requires a high level of customer service, attention to detail, management of approximately 20-25 part-time staff, and evaluation and oversight of programs. 

The ideal candidate will have significant experience working in camp programs in a fast-paced and dynamic setting. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in early childhood education, recreation, or a related field with a minimum of two years of experience in delivering kindergarten, elementary and/or youth programming, etc. is preferred. 

Must be 18 years of age or older to apply for this position. This position requires a commitment through August 7, 2026.  

DEFINITION: Communicate with participants, part-time staff, and parents, coordinate camp schedules, plan and organize camp daily activities, program registrations, and overall program needs for the Preschool-6th grade Camp Thrill Valley programs. Hours are approximately 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday) while camp is in session from June 15 - August 7, 2026 and approximately 20-25 hours per week in preparation for the start of camp. Ideal start date is April 1, 2026. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Facilitates camp activities for ages 18 months to 12 years old. 

• Organizes, implements, directs, supervises and/or promotes specific programs and activities. 

• Participates in the preparation and administration of assigned camp budgets. 

• Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 

• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively with staff, parents, and children. 

• Monitors the day-to-day operations of the camps, including assisting in administrative paperwork (health forms, swim lesson schedules), check-in and check-out of participants, setting up outdoor equipment, handling and resolving complaints not requiring the attention of a supervisor and ensuring that programs and events have required materials, staff, and supplies. 

• Assists in the evaluation of programming including conducting customer satisfaction surveys and analyzing reports on program effectiveness. 

• Enforces safety and operating procedures and provides for maintenance needs including compliance with health and safety codes. 

• Accurately maintain attendance records. 

• The ability to speak English clearly and understandably. 

• Perform related duties as required. 

• Must be able to lift 50lbs 

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education, training, and experience, which likely provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Pay rate: starting at $18.79 hourly

• Thousand Oaks Community Center - variable hours (may include evening and/or weekend hours)
• Thousand Oaks Teen Center - variable hours (may include evening and/or weekend hours)

Summary:
Under general supervision, plan, conduct, and participate in recreational program activities according to established programs, schedules, and standards, in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Develop, conduct, and participate in various athletic, craft, social, cultural, and instructional activities
• Prepare facilities for programming, special events, or rental group usage
• Greet visitors, direct participants to the appropriate location, and respond to general inquiries
• Ensure safety of environment and equipment for staff, volunteers, participants, and visitors
• May open or close and secure facilities in compliance with District policies and procedures
• Issue and collect recreation equipment and supplies used by instructors, participants, or visitors
• Supervise special events, field trips, and other group activities

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Coordinate and participate in promotional activities and community events
• Modify and adapt activities specific to specialized programs or populations, as appropriate
• May assist with transportation in specialized programs
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty* satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required:

Education and Experience:
Minimum age of 18 years old with a High School Diploma (or GED). At least 500 hours of experience in recreation with 15 units completed in recreation or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Certificates and Licenses:

• First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment with ability to maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of employment.
• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance.
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
• Proof of a negative TB skin test.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form. Ability to write routine correspondence using correct spelling and grammar. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply common sense and exercise good judgement in solving problems. Ability to establish effective relationships with fellow employees, volunteers, and participants and/or parents/guardians.

Fingerprint-Based Background Check:
All recreation employees are required to obtain fingerprint-based background clearance prior to their first day of employment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
The employee may provide guidance or direction to other part-time employees and to volunteers.
