Camp Newark is seeking a confident, creative, and organized leader to serve as an Activity Coordinator for our dynamic summer camp program. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in high-energy environments and are passionate about creating meaningful experiences for youth ages 6–11. 

The Activity Coordinator plays a key leadership role in planning and delivering engaging daily programming while supporting and supervising camp staff. This position requires strong communication, organization, and leadership skills, along with the ability to create a fun, structured, and safe camp environment. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Create, schedule, and implement creative camp activities for youth ages 6–11, including arts and crafts, sports, games, and STEM-based enrichment. 

• Lead, mentor, and evaluate camp counselors, including training and delegating responsibilities. 

• Coordinate daily camp schedules, special events, and field trips. 

• Maintain clear and professional communication with parents regarding camper experiences and program information. 

• Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants. 

• Support overall camp operations and assist with problem-solving as needed. 

This position requires working both indoors and outdoors in a fast-paced summer camp setting. 

WORK SCHEDULE 

Summer-only position (June – August) 

Monday–Friday 

30–35 hours per week

GENERAL INFO 
 

Under general supervision, the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I/II performs routine public contact and safety work in serving as a pool lifeguard. They also provide essential support to recreation programs and services by performing custodial tasks, event setup and teardown, program support, and minor maintenance duties relating to aquatics. This temporary, parttime position requires working up to 20 hours per week. The role involves ensuring the health and safety of aquatic patrons, facilities are clean, safe, and operational while delivering excellent customer service. Performs other duties as assigned.  

 

UNIVERSAL POSITION DUTIES (Applicable to all roles; Illustrative Purposes Only) 

• Monitor the swimming pool and enforce safety regulations. 
• Assist with aquatics programs, special events, and facility upkeep. 
• Test and maintain pool water chemistry. 
• Set up and tear down for classes, programs, and events. 
• Lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 100 pounds. 
• Work outdoors in sun, rain, or wind as needed. 

 

POSITION-SPECIFIC DUTIES 

 

LIFEGUARD (Illustrative Purposes Only) 

• Maintain a "rescue-ready" posture and scan assigned zones for drowning emergencies. 
• Work in a rotation with other lifeguards across indoor and outdoor stations. 
• Assist with facility operations, special events, and customer service. 
• Attend weekly and monthly safety trainings. 
• Perform light cleaning and maintenance tasks to ensure facility safety. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Minimum Age: 15 
• Education: High school diploma or GED not required. 

Certifications: 

• American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (or ability to obtain). 
• First Aid & CPR Certification. 

 

SWIM INSTRUCTOR (Illustrative Purposes Only) 

• Teach American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim lessons following provided lesson plans. 
• Maintain open communication with parents and participants. 
• Assist with emergency responses and pool safety as trained. 
• Attend weekly and monthly safety trainings. 
• Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure facility upkeep. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Minimum Age: 15 
• Education: High school diploma or GED not required. 
• Skills: Swimming proficiency at American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4. 
• Preferred Certification: Water Safety Instructor 

 

LESSON MANAGER (Illustrative Purposes Only) 

• Oversee swim instructors and ensure consistent lesson delivery. 
• Arrive 30 minutes prior to and stay 30 minutes after swim lessons for setup and breakdown. 
• Assist with instructor training and safety drills. 
• Maintain and review lesson records to ensure program quality. 
• Perform facility upkeep and provide customer service. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• All requirements from Swim Instructor, PLUS: 
  Experience: At least 6 months of experience as a Swim Instructor. 

 

POOL MANAGER -Weekends 

• Supervise lifeguards and enforce safety procedures. 
• Conduct lifeguard rotations and monitor staff performance. 
• Ensure staff maintain a “rescue-ready” posture and remain alert while on duty. 
• Assist in planning and leading weekly and monthly safety trainings.  
• Monitor pool chemicals and water quality. 
• Open, close, and secure facility as needed. 
• Provide customer service, event support, and light facility maintenance.

GENERAL INFO

Under general supervision, the Service Desk staff provides essential support to the San Bruno RAC by performing front desk operations, assisting members and visitors, and supporting daily facility functions. This temporary, part-time position requires working up to 20 hours per week. The role involves delivering excellent customer service, processing memberships and program registrations, handling payments, and providing information about facility programs and policies. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and Experience

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. This provision may be waived if applicant is under the age of 18.
• One year of experience in a job-related field is preferred.

Building Attendant I - This is the entry level class in the Building Attendant series.  Incumbents in this class work under close supervision.  As experience is gained, incumbents may be granted more independence of action under established guidelines.

Building Attendant II - This is the journey level class in the Building Attendant series. Incumbents are expected to work independently in the absence of close supervision.

The City of Orinda Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking two (2) qualified individuals with the passion and desire to work with youth campers as a summer Camp Coordinator (Recreation Program Specialist) in the Parks and Recreation Department.   This position takes direction from the Camp Director and reports to the City's full-time Recreation Coordinator.

MANDATORY TRAINING:  Must be available for paid training on Saturday, May 30, 2026. Additional training will occur int he mornings during the week of June 1 - June 5, 2026.

SUMMER CAMP SEASON:  Must be available for summer camp season June 1 - August 7, 2026.

WORK HOURS:  Work hours vary depending on the number of staff and youth participants.  Approximate work hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Incumbents of the position will provide their own transportation to program site(s). 

Supervision:

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator and Camp Director, Camp Coordinators are responsible for the day-to-day operations of their assigned summer day camp:  executing weekly curriculums by ordering supplies, supervising their camp staff, and leading all of their camp activities on a daily basis.  The City of Orinda offers two city-run camps:  Camp Orinda and Camp Orinda Jr.

Camp Orinda is a full-day (9:00 am to 4:00 pm) traditional camp for 6 to 11 year olds.

Camp Orinda Jr. is a half-day camp (9:15 am to 12:45 pm) for 3 1/2 to 5-year olds.

Essential Duties:

• Execute the camp curriculum in accordance with the Camp Director and Recreation Coordinator.
• Lead arts, crafts and games according to the theme of the week.
• Participate in weekly camp debriefs with Camp Director.
• Offer leadership, guidance and direction to Camp Counselors.
• Supervise Counselors-in-Training (CIT), pair CIT's with experienced Camp Counselors, and delegate CIT weekly duties during CIT camp week.
• Serve as a mentor and role model to campers and communicate effectively with guardians and families.
• Safely and appropriately supervise all campers.  Camp Orinda Coordinator will supervise campers on weekly field trips around the East Bay.
• Monitor supplies and create weekly supply list.
• Ensure the health and safety of all campers are prioritized in all summer camp programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

All City of Orinda employees are expected to uphold and exhibit the City’s core values including serving the public, being respectful and accountable, maintaining professionalism, and demonstrating responsibility.

Education: Must have completed at least eleventh (11) grade or graduated from high school by the start of camp.  High school or college-level coursework in Recreation, Sports, Administration, Human Development, Education or related field is preferred.  

Experience: Recreation, athletics and/or education experience is desirable.  Experience teaching and/or working with children and youth age twelve (12) and under is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: CPR, First Aid, and AED training and/or certification are required prior to the first day of camp.  There will be a CPR, First Aid and AED training at the May 30, 2026 training for any staff that is not certified by this date.

Special Requirements:   This is a mandated reporter position.  Appointment to this position is contingent upon:

• A valid work permit issued from school (if under age 18 and have not graduated from high school or received a State Certificate of Proficiency).
• A post offer, pre-employment live scan criminal history check (over 18 years), drug screen, physical and TB Test required.  Please note that if under 18 some processes may require legal guardian consent.

JOIN THE TEAM

Join our team of dedicated staff working in the special events division of Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation, & Community Services Department. Team members will assist in setting up, monitoring, and breaking down events all while providing excellent customer service.

 

ABOUT THE POSITION
Redwood City is known for delivering a large variety of high-quality special events year-round including concerts, festivals, cultural events, kids concerts, pop up recreational activities, and more. Duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: follow event plan and execute assigned duties effectively and efficiently; understand proper setup and breakdown procedures of special events equipment; maintain and care for equipment as necessary; monitor program areas for quality assurance; operate effectively as a member of a team; report to supervisors orally and in writing; complete assigned paperwork such as timecards and incident and/or accident reports.
Work schedules can vary during the year pending current event programming. Candidates can expect an average of 15-20 hours per week throughout the year.
