We are now hiring up to 35 part-time Lifeguards for our aquatics program!

Located at the McBean Memorial Pool, our Lifeguards are an essential part of the aquatics recreational programs that we offer our residents.  Be a part of a team that allows everyone to beat the heat and have fun!

We are looking for candidates with qualities such as reliability, creativity, dependability and enthusiasm.  The aquatics program will require you to work various days, weekends or evenings, but we are flexible with schedules.

Seasonal employees are limited to working no more than 999 hours in a fiscal year.

DEFINITION:

Under the direct or general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, performs a variety of duties to supervise the pool, decks, and additional areas of an aquatic facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)

• Maintain constant surveillance as assigned to safeguard swimmers from drowning and other accidents.
• Maintain discipline and orderly conduct among patrons and enforce all pertinent City pool rules and regulations in order to maintain a safe environment.
• Promote and enforce water safety procedures; effect swimming rescues; render first aid and CPR as required.
• Assist in the planning, promoting and organizing of prescribed Red Cross programs and special events.
• Perform pool facility maintenance functions as required.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Prepare and maintain accurate and up-to-date records and reports.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Perform heavy manual labor; learn to operate a variety of equipment; work with tools related to recreational maintenance. The position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The incumbent needs to have the ability to hear and speak for purposes of communication. The position also requires both near and far vision when administering programs and operating equipment. The need to lift, carry and push equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. The incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (The following are a representative sample of the KSAs necessary to perform essential duties of the position.)

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of water safety and swimming rescue techniques; proper stroke mechanics; principles and techniques of CPR and first aid; practices and methods of public relations and customer service; and techniques and principles of effective interpersonal communication.

Skills to:

Receive direction and follow oral and written instructions; be reliable, dependable, creative, and enthusiastic; and develop effective working relationships with fellow city employees, children, and parents.

Ability to:

On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules; walk; swim with proficiency and endurance; render life saving measures; interpret policies and procedures, and explain operations and problem solve issues for the public and with staff; intermittently set up equipment, move and carry supplies and equipment; lift or carry weight of 45 pounds or less; prevent accidents and conduct effective rescues; understand and translate City policies and practices into everyday working practices; make sound decisions and solid problem-solving methods; respond to emergency situations in a calm and effective manner; administer first aid and CPR; prepare reports, course records, and lesson plans; maintain accurate and up-to-date records; work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; understand and carry out written and oral directions; communicate tactfully with customers; communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing; promote and enforce safety procedures including proper use of equipment; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

The process may include an in-basket exercise, individual interviews, panel interviews and/or other related components.  Only those candidates who have the best combination of qualifications in relation to the requirements and duties of the position will continue in the selection process. The candidate selected for the position will be required to complete a background check including reference checks, fingerprint check, medical exam, drug-screening and/or other related components.

Hourly range: $24.57 - $29.87/hour

Part-time position: up to 30 hours per week; primarily Monday - Friday  (may include evening/weekend hours)

Summary

Under general supervision, the Marketing Assistant assists in the planning and organization of registration, marketing, publicity, and community outreach efforts in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in the development and implementation of social media strategies and campaigns
• Assist in the administration and maintenance of the District’s website
• Compile and maintain distribution lists for mailings and electronic communications
• Solicit feedback from participants and visitors through online surveys and distribute relevant response data to staff in the District units
• Promote District events, activities, facilities, and other special projects
• Support staff in District Units in the development of news releases, special event flyers/brochures, community announcements, project-based communications, or other communication methods
• Assist with the registration process, including the administration and maintenance of the software
• Assist in the preparation and distribution of the Recreation Division Program Guides
• Answer, screen, and route phone calls from the public

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• May drive a District or personal vehicle to deliver materials or attend meetings
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty* satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

Education/Experience: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: graduation from high school or GED and at least 2,000 hours of relevant work or volunteer experience, with at least 30 college units completed in recreation or a related field. An associate degree is preferred. Must be at least 18 years old. Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Canva, and a variety of social media platforms. 

Language Ability: Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form. Ability to write routine correspondence using correct spelling and grammar.

Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to use common sense and excerise good judgement in solving problems. Ability to establish effective relationships with fellow employees, volunteers and participants and parents/guardians.

Certificates and Licenses: 

• Pediatric First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment 
• A valid California Driver's License with a good driving record and current automobile insurance
• Department of Justice fingerpring clearance
• Proof of a negative TB skin test

Supervisory Responsibilities:  There are no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a community center or office environment subject to frequent public contact and interruption, and to intermittent exposure to indivuduals acting in a disagreeable fashion. Exposure to hazardous conditions may vary according to Unit assignment.
