ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the general direction, the Parking Enforcement Officer performs a variety of law enforcement support duties, with the majority of responsibilities involving enforcement of parking regulations. The PEO performs technical field and office work to enforce appropriate codes, laws, and regulations and to execute related programs pertaining to on-street and off-street public parking within the City of Mill Valley.

Examples of Essential Duties (include but are not limited to):

• Patrol assigned routes on foot and/or driving a parking enforcement vehicle.
• Enforce parking laws, codes, and regulations.
• Identify vehicles in violation of parking laws, codes, and/or regulations, and issue appropriate citations or remedies.
• Collect coins deposited in meters.
• Prepare statistical reports on activities, as requested.
• Minor repair and maintenance of parking meters.
• Receive and record complaints from citizens regarding illegally parked and abandoned vehicles.
• Enter data into computer for abandoned and illegally parked vehicles.
• Mark and arrange for towing of abandoned or illegally parked vehicles or impounding of vehicles for outstanding tickets.
• Chalk tires of vehicles parked in non-metered spaces, records time, and returns at specified intervals to ticket vehicles remaining in spaces illegally.
• Provide assistance and general information related to permit areas to a diverse population.
• Explain code and policy requirements.
• Operate, maintain and troubleshoot computer programs, software and other related equipment used to perform required duties.
• Set up and remove barricades and temporary signs.
• Direct traffic.
• Front counter reception and customer service.

Under supervision, the Community Service Officer (CSO) performs a wide range of field and office support duties in the patrol and support services divisions within the Marysville Police Department.

A Dispatcher I is a civilian employee of the Police Department who performs a variety of tasks in the Department’s Support Services Division. The Dispatcher I receives incoming calls for police assistance and response; acts as a primary Dispatcher when appropriate; performs a variety of general support duties related to police communications; completes a wide variety of general clerical duties.

Examples of Duties:

The Dispatcher I duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Answer emergency and non-emergency police related phone calls, help prioritize requests for service based upon available resources, receive radio requests and handle accordingly, type, process and file a wide variety of reports and materials including memos, letters, complaints, declarations, warrants, citations, crime and traffic reports.  Assists Department personnel and the public in person and by phone performing record checks, collecting fees and mailing requested reports to outside agencies in accordance with established regulations.   A Dispatcher I may be assigned to work various hours, shifts, holidays, weekends and overtime.

Typical Qualifications:

A combination of education and work experience including 2-3 years of general office work involving typing of varied materials, public contact, general filing and basic record keeping; type at least 40 wpm net.  Knowledge of business English, spelling; modern office practices and procedures; record keeping. Ability to learn assigned clerical tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routine; write English legibly; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; type and learn the operation of other standard office equipment; a willingness to work varying shifts; and to learn radio dispatching skills. 

Salary & Benefits

• Salary: $6,681 - $8,612 per month.
• Health/Medical Benefit: Choice of coverage with Kaiser or Blue Shield. The City pays 80% of monthly premiums at each coverage level. In lieu of medical coverage, the City will contribute $400 (employee only coverage) or $500 (employee + 1 coverage) or $600 (family coverage) into a MissionSquare 457 deferred compensation plan.

- Equivalent to an associate’s degree or have completed 60 semester or 90 quarter units at an accredited college or university in business information systems in computer science or related field, plus five years experience in management information systems. Some assignments may require specialized systems experience such as HTML, CSS, Javascript and XML, PHP, and structured query language (SQL).

- A technology certificate from an accredited college or trade school in information technology, computer applications, web technologies, computer information systems, application development database design, programming, technology project management, or related field and five years of experience in private-sector or public-sector positions in information technology, including systems analysis work and development, system integration, or project management.
 

- Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in computer science or a related field, and two years of progressively responsible experience comparable to that of an Information Technology Analyst I in the City of Mountain View. Some assignments may require specialized systems experience such as HTML, CSS, Javascript and XML, PHP, and structured query language (SQL).

Highly Desirable:

The Newark Police Department is a modern, progressive law enforcement agency with 59 sworn and 27 professional staff employees.  The Newark Police Department values and rewards prior police experience.  Well qualified lateral officers have enjoyed specialty assignments and promotions based upon total law enforcement experience. State of the art safety equipment, including, individually issued patrol rifles with sighting systems, Ballistic Helmets, Smart Phones and an Armored Rescue Vehicle.

For well qualified officers, the Newark Police Department offers accelerated hiring and training programs, as well as numerous lateral entry incentives.  Our program is designed to recognize and reward your skills and experience, to include: $2500 academy reimbursement and $2500 for moving expenses. The City of Newark is currently accepting applications for Police Officer Trainees - Entry Level and Academy Attendees. 

THE POSITION:

The Police Officer Trainee position is an entry level position, requiring no prior law enforcement experience. Applicants are required to possess a valid California Driver’s License, be legally authorized to work in the U.S and be at least 21 years old at time of swear-in. All applicants must possess a strong moral character, as well as good work ethic and maturity. All candidates will be required to undergo comprehensive testing processes to determine their physical and mental suitability for a career in Law Enforcement.

The Police Officer Trainee is a temporary employee.  The trainee attends a P.O.S.T. certified academy.  Upon successful completion of the academy, the trainee will be eligible for appointment to the position of Police Officer.  New Police Officers will receive benefits available to regular employees and will serve an 18-month probationary period.

The Police Communications Dispatcher receives and processes routine and emergency calls. The incumbent will dispatch police and enter, retrieve, and use data from various automated law enforcement information systems. The successful candidate will coordinate with and transfer calls to other emergency service providers as appropriate. The individual will perform a variety of clerical and technical duties in support of the department’s operations. In addition, they will learn applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties, and perform other related duties as required. This recruitment is to fill a full-time and per-diem position and create a list for anticipated future vacancies. We will be creating two lists, one for already POST-certified dispatchers and one for entry-level dispatchers.
