Applications are being accepted for the position of Engineering Intern with the City of South San Francisco’s Public Works Department - Engineering Division. This is a non-benefited, part-time hourly/temporary position.

Hourly Rate: $23.00 per hour; Interns will be expected to work a minimum of 12 hours per week for a period of 12 months, the hours are flexible.

THE POSITION
Under supervision, performs sub-professional engineering office work to assist the Public Works Engineering Division teams on programs and projects that may include engineering permits, land development plan checks, procedural and standards research and development, record and asset management, traffic research and field crew assistance.

IDEAL CANDIDATE SECTION
The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in basic engineering principles and demonstrate proficiency in modern drafting and design practices. They should be familiar with engineering office tools and computer-aided drafting software such as AutoCAD, as well as design and GIS mapping systems.

We are seeking someone who is detail-oriented, highly organized, adaptable, and self-motivated, with excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate should be able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.

The ideal candidate will have willingness to learn about construction management and inspection procedures and the ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations and drafting work. They should be capable of collecting and recording engineering field data with a high level of detail and maintaining thorough documentation. Proficiency in modern office software tools, including PowerPoint, to create professional presentations is essential. The candidate must be able to prepare clear and concise written correspondence, including responses to public inquiries, and demonstrate the ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with contractors and the public are important. Flexibility to work varied hours as needed to meet project demands is also required.

TYPICAL DUTIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

• Performs a wide variety of responsible sub-professional engineering work including assisting engineering staff with general clerical, administrative, and technical tasks for public works projects
• Performs electronic document filing, enters data and creates reports in various software applications
• Conducts internet research and research of engineering record archives
• Processes permits and reviews land development plans
• Assists with Traffic Advisory Committee tasks
• Assists with internal and external communications and public outreach
• Learns to assist with engineering plan reviews and traffic control plans
• Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: None 

Education: Current student enrolled in a university/college pursuing an undergraduate degree (Junior or Senior) or graduate degree in Engineering, preferably in Civil Engineering.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License is required.

The City is seeking a Cross-Connection Control Specialist to perform a range of technical and specialized duties supporting the City’s water system, including the development, implementation, and maintenance of cross-connection control and backflow prevention programs. This role ensures compliance with safe drinking water standards as well as federal, state, and local regulations. Responsibilities include conducting field investigations, surveys, tests, and audits of work performed by third‑party vendors or contract staff; preparing reports; maintaining records and files; and performing related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by specialized training in backflow prevention, cross-connection control, water distribution, or a related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible field and/or office experience related to water distribution and cross-connection control, including inspections, data collection, public contact, and the
interpretation and application of policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certificate issued by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) or Northern California Backflow Prevention Association (NCBPA), to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Cross-Connection Control Specialist Certificate issued by the NCBPA, to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Grade II (D-2) Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the State of California Water Resource Control Board, to be maintained throughout employment.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview (weighted 60%) and a practical exercise (weighted 40%). An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Public Works department will make the hiring decision.

• Salary range: $24.12 - $30.82 + Excellent Benefits
• Salary Increases:

    • Salary placement is generally at the beginning of the range.
    • Advanced placement may be considered based on related education and experience.

                              MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training:

Experience:

• One year of experience in the operation of a transit vehicle.

License or Certificate:
