About the Department

The mission of the San Jose Police Department is to create safe places to live, work and learn through community partnerships. 

Position Duties

The City of San Jose is recruiting for a part-time School Crossing Guards in the Police Department during the normal school year.  Work involves providing for the safe conduct of elementary and junior high school children across heavily traveled streets and reporting problems requiring possible police action. Positions may involve substituting at different corners or a regular location assignment.  In general, these assignments are a split shift with approximately ten (10) hours per week.  School Crossing Guards are required to work outside regardless of weather conditions and must be able to provide a uniform as specified by the Police Department.   Work includes outside duties and exposure to weather.  Work may include the physical ability to sit, stand, walk quickly, step up/down from the curb, reach, push and/or pull, twist and or rotate, bend, lift and carry up to 10 pounds, use hands hold and use a stop sign the entire shift, use other hand to stop traffic and use a whistle at the same.

The City of San Bruno is currently accepting applications for Public Safety Dispatcher, Per Diem candidates. 

The Position 

The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for Public Safety Dispatchers. The San Bruno Police Department has a long-standing tradition of small-town service with big-city dedication to public safety.  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Dispatchers receive and transmit emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio traffic as well as process communication reports, records, and radio logs, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.  Dispatchers may also support the Police Department by performing clerical tasks, training, assisting with fingerprinting, and being accountable for financial transactions.  This position is integral in supporting the goals and objectives of the City and Police Department.   

Essential Duties 

• Receives and transmits emergency telephone and radio traffic.   

• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs. 

• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records. 

• Maintains a high level of confidentiality. 

• Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks: assisting in preparation of work schedules; training and evaluating performance of new employees; conducting training sessions; assisting in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and check transactions.  

• Plans, organizes, and directs dispatching and related activities on an assigned shift. This may include preparing schedules and prioritizing work; observing work performed by Dispatcher I employees to ensure compliance with standards; approving time off; conducting employee evaluations; and providing effective recommendations on personnel matters. 

• Prepares and maintains training and procedure manuals.  As required, prepares special reports, and undertakes projects for Management Staff.  

• May act as Records/Dispatcher Supervisor in their absence. 

• Maintains liaison with other Department Divisions, City Departments, and other law enforcement and emergency response agencies. 

• Maintains various C.A.D and Record Management Files. 

• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

 Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation. 

Education

Experience 

• Completion of a probationary period in a public safety agency. 

Certificates and Licenses 

• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, Class C with a good driving record. 

• Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Dispatch Certificate is required.  

Special Requirements 

• Possess excellent vision and hearing skills, with ability to sit, talk, type, hear, and walk for extended periods of time as well as lift or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

THE ORGANIZATION

Incorporated in 1927, Menlo Park is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council is the City’s five-member governing body whose members are elected by district for four-year overlapping terms in general municipal elections. The Mayor and Vice Mayor each serve one-year terms and are selected annually by the City Council.

The City Council appoints the City Manager and City Attorney as well as members of the Planning Commission and numerous advisory boards. The City Manager appoints all executive and management level positions. City staff report to one of six departments: City Manager’s Office, Administrative Services, Community Development, Library and Community Services, Police, and Public Works, which includes water and solid waste enterprises. Fire protection and sanitary services are provided by separate special districts.

The City is supported by 296 FTE and has over 55 funds with a total expenditure budget of $207.9 million. THE DEPARTMENT

The Community Development Department is responsible for ensuring a sustainable and vibrant community that supports a high quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors. It is comprised of 35 FTE who operate as an effective and cohesive team across multiple functional areas and lead a number of City initiatives to support the City Council goals. The Department includes the Building, Planning and Housing Divisions, and core services include building permits, plan check, inspections, affordable housing administration and housing initiatives, as well as long-range planning and development review.

The Building Division, which is the division this position will be responsible for overseeing, includes managing building permit, plan check and inspection processes for compliance with all applicable State laws, local municipal codes and related policies involving building construction. These functions require a high level of customer service with the public and coordination within and across various departments and agencies. THE POSITION

The City of Menlo Park is seeking a strong, forward-thinking leader who is collaborative and passionate about serving the community and advancing department and City goals. This position serves as the City’s Building Official, as well as plans, organizes, manages, and provides administrative direction and oversight for major functions, activities, and staff of the Building Division. The incumbent will assist with department initiatives, including annual budgeting and monitoring and the development and administration of departmental policies, procedures and services, as well as day-to-day operations, including reviewing plans, interpreting applicable code, and meeting with stakeholders to explain processes. Areas of responsibility include building and safety, permit processing and issuance, inspection and compliance with the California Building Standards Code and relevant parts of the City’s Municipal Code, and building plan check review.

This position plays a key role in collaborating and coordinating assigned activities with other City departments, teams, and outside agencies and fostering cooperative working relationships. The person in this role is also expected to have excellent rapport with the general public, with the ability to respond to, and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.

Current examples of notable projects include coordinating the upcoming California Building Standards Code cycle, collaborating on the IT Master Plan and land management permitting system (Accela) to improve customer experience and service delivery, and overseeing the building permit process for a diverse range of development from tenant improvements to hotels to comprehensive mixed-use campuses. The City has over 2,000 residential units, two hotels and more than 1.8 million square feet of commercial spaces approved, but not yet under construction, along with a number of large development projects currently under review. This position reports directly to the Community Development Director and is responsible for overseeing several positions within the Building Division across all functional areas.

b) National Testing Network (NTN) Frontline Law Enforcement Written Exam: Passing scores accepted for this exam are Video Judgement Test 65% or higher; Reading 70% or higher; and Writing 70% or higher. This examination is administered directly by the National Testing Network, and it may be taken virtually or in person at testing sites nationwide. National Testing Network (NTN) Frontline Law Enforcement Written Examination (Online option): Applicants can register with NTN and schedule for the written examination by visiting www.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select “Find Jobs”, then select “Law Enforcement Jobs” and sign up for San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. You must take the examination first before applying. Candidates who have already completed the National Testing Network (NTN) examination may submit their results through NTN to our agency. The exam must have been taken within one year of your submitted application. Candidates must meet the minimum passing scores. Acceptance of NTN exam scores are subject to verification with National Testing Network.

 

Qualifications

As required by California State Law candidates for Deputy Sheriff Trainee and Deputy Sheriff classifications must have the following qualifications:

Education:  A high school graduate or passing the General Education Development (GED) test or other high school equivalency test approved by CDE, or completion of at least 60 college units from an accredited or approved institution to apply.

Knowledge of: Civil laws, codes, ordinances and recent court decisions; principles and practices of law enforcement, criminal investigation and basic psychology, rules of evidence, laws of arrest and court procedure.

Skill/Ability to: Work collaboratively with others to solve problems; read and comprehend legal documents, law enforcement manuals, and court decisions; read standard street and highway maps; follow instructions; function effectively under stress; demonstrate leadership and control in volatile, rapidly changing environments; maintain impartiality, transparency and make accurate observations; perform repeated strenuous physical exertion; write complete and accurate reports and correspondence.; communicate clearly and respectfully with all types of people, both orally and in writing; lead by personal example by interacting professionally and compassionately with community members; meet State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) medical, physical and psychological standards for law enforcement.

Licensure/Certification:

• Possession of a Class C California driver license or equivalent (both classifications).

Deputy Sheriff Trainee: Eligibility for State of California P.O.S.T. law enforcement academy and field officer training OR successful graduation from State of California P.O.S.T. law enforcement academy and eligibility for field officer training.

Other Requirements:

• Must be at least 21 years of age per P.O.S.T and AB-89 Peace Officers: Minimum Qualifications.
• Refrain from using tobacco products at any time for employees hired by the County after October 1, 2004.

Oral Interview: Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a panel interview with the Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Bureau.

Physical Agility Exam: Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a physical agility test which may include, but is not limited to, the following events: weight drag, obstacle course, fence/wall climb and 1.5 mile run completed in 15 minutes or less.

Candidates must successfully pass both the departmental interview and the departmental physical agility test to be hired for the position of Deputy Sheriff's Trainee.

The City of San José Information Technology Department seeks an experienced City Information Security Officer (CISO) to lead cybersecurity Citywide initiatives.
 
The CISO will direct the Cybersecurity Office as the City’s principal executive leader for information and systems security. In partnership with the Chief Information Officer (CIO), they will manage risk identification, protection and compliance, threat detection, incident response (IR), and recovery services for all City departments to ensure business resilience.
 
The City’s CISO must be able to apply expertise in security strategy, cybersecurity frameworks, managing staff and vendor services, leading incident management, and optimizing resources to achieve desired security outcomes.
 
Key responsibilities include but not limited to:

• Lead and mentor the Cybersecurity team, offering expertise and support to foster growth and a collaborative environment. 
• Collaborate with business units and solution providers to provide optimal security measures and achieve a balance between sustaining business operations and achieving security compliance.
• Coordinate with stakeholders within the City and partners/vendors outside of the City to ensure information and systems meet the City’s standards for threat identification, protection, and risk detection.
• Develop, operationalize, and enhance the City’s cybersecurity strategic plan, programs, policies, and architecture, including vulnerability, risk, and threat management programs through remediation.
• Conduct training programs to educate City personnel on relevant security best practices, foster diligence, and ensure compliance.
• Provide expert security guidance to City departments and officials in service planning, procurements, contract negotiations, vendor management, and project management.
• Provide expert guidance on regulations and standards (FISMA, FedRAMP, CJIS, PCI-DSS, HIPAA, etc.) the City must meet in providing municipal services, as well as security frameworks (NIST, ISO, IEEE, etc.) to shape City operations.
• Oversee and lead incident management/response processes in coordination with City departments to respond and recover from incidents.
• Resolve security-related audits in partnership with City staff.
• Ensure comprehensive security strategies align with resilience plans and emergency management exercises.
• Oversee vendor relationships and manage the City’s procurement and utilization of cybersecurity products and services across departments.
• Lead the annual Cybersecurity Assessment of the City’s technology infrastructure.
• Provide strategic and operational leadership to address cybersecurity in the City’s emerging Internet-of-Things, smart communities, privacy, and equity through data initiatives. 
• Collaborate with the Digital Privacy Officer to address privacy challenges emerging from new technologies, including AI. 
• Implement governance policies to ensure responsible AI usage across the organization, aligning with ethical standards and risk management protocols. 
• Support the GovAI Coalition’s initiatives to promote responsible and safe use of AI in government.
