ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Library and Recreation Department is comprised of two divisions, Library and Recreation & Childcare, that are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of San Rafael residents. The Department’s mission is to enrich the community through discovery, learning, and play, and strives to maximize the delivery of strategically aligned programs and services to provide the highest value for the community.
The current vacancy is at our San Rafael Community Center and Albert Field, which is located in downtown San Rafael and hosts a wide variety of events, programs, and activities. The community center is a multi-use facility to accommodate groups of all ages, from tiny tots to older adults. Individuals, groups, or organizations are welcome to rent any part of the facility for meetings, weddings, seminars, banquets, fundraisers or any other events. The center includes an auditorium/theatre, kitchen, lobby, lounge, and four multi-purpose meeting and activity rooms - three of which can be combined to create a single larger room.
THE POSITION
The Custodian position will primarily support the Recreation & Childcare Division. The Division includes three community centers, five children's centers, one cultural center, an aquatics center, two community gardens, three ball fields, a multi-use turf field, three community parks, 11 neighborhood parks, six pocket parks, and five special use parks. The Recreation Division is responsible for developing innovative, diverse, and community-centered programs and services at the City's park and recreation facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Including but not limited to)

- Sweeps, mops, oils/waxes and polishes floors.
- Dusts and polishes woodwork, fixtures and equipment.
- Washes windows, walls, and lavatories.
- Empties and cleans wastebaskets and trash containers.
- Provides lead direction to part-time/seasonal custodial aides and facility attendants.
- Works at the front desk performing reception duties in relief of other staff members.
- Moves and set up chairs and tables.
- Cleans and polishes lighting fixtures, surfaces, and trim.
- Cleans rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, locker rooms, and other work areas.
- Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floor.
- Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies.
- Empties waste baskets.
- Transports trash and waste to disposal area.
- Replenishes bathroom supplies.
- Replace light bulbs.
- Transports small equipment or tools between departments.
- Delivers messages.
- Performs related duties as required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
- Able to read and write English.
- Some custodial experience preferred.
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
