The City of San Mateo Parks & Recreation Department is looking for enthusiastic, team-oriented,

The Position:

This position supports the daily operations of youth programs by planning and leading activities while helping maintain a safe and welcoming environment for participants. Recreation Specialist II staff take an active role in activity leadership and participant supervision while supporting Recreation Specialists I. Strong attention to developmentally appropriate practices and safety compliance is essential.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be at least 18 years of age or possess a high school diploma or equivalent and preferably have at least one season or comparable experience working in a classroom, after-school program, or camp environment. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills when working with youth, families, and staff, and be able to work independently while following direction from higher-level recreation staff. The position requires individuals who show leadership and initiative in the implementation of program activities and who work cooperatively as part of a team. Successful candidates must pass all required background checks upon hire. Availability is required Monday through Friday from May through August between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Recreation Specialist II Example Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Collaborate with Recreation staff to Plan and lead developmentally appropriate activities for children ages 5–12
• Provide professional guidance and support to Recreation Specialist I staff
• Assist with behavior management using positive youth development practices
• Support daily program routines, including sign-in/sign-out procedures and transitions
• Supervise participants during activities, swim days, and field trips
• Communicate appropriately with families and participants
• Assist with maintaining program supplies and equipment
• Participate in staff meetings and training as assigned
• Follow established safety procedures and program guidelines

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a valid State of California driver’s license, and Early Childhood Education units are preferred. Candidates should have at least one year of paid experience in a classroom, after-school program, or camp environment, along with a minimum of a high school diploma. Applicants must demonstrate leadership experience working with youth and strong verbal and written communication skills. The position requires the ability to work independently while following direction from higher-level Recreation staff, as well as the ability to assist with training and mentoring team members. Attention to detail is essential, including maintaining accurate records and required documentation. Proficiency in basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel is expected. Successful completion of required background checks is mandatory upon hire. Availability is required Monday through Friday from May through August, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a valid State of California driver’s license, with Early Childhood Education units preferred. They should have at least one year of paid leadership experience within a classroom, after-school program, or camp environment and a minimum of a high school diploma. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, particularly when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This position requires the ability to work independently while following direction from a coordinator, as well as the capacity to train, supervise, and collaborate effectively with staff, youth participants, and their families. Attention to detail is critical, including maintaining accurate records and submitting required documentation promptly. Candidates must be proficient in computer applications, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel, and successfully pass all required background checks upon hire. A bilingual pay differential is available for candidates fluent in identified languages. Recreation Program Specialist Example Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assist in the implementation of a 40-hour Summer Camp Training for per-diem staff.
• Collaborate with Recreation Specialists I, II, and III to plan and deliver daily camp activities that are developmentally appropriate for children aged 5-12.
• Lead recreation per-diem staff on behavior management strategies, best practices for working with youth, and daily camp routines such as sign-in/sign-out procedures, field trip management, incident/accident forms, and activity implementation.
• Occasional driving of City vehicles to support programmatic needs, including transporting youth participants on field trips.
• Provide regular and clear feedback to participants’ families regarding their child’s experience and progress.
• Manage camp supplies, T-shirt inventory, and first aid equipment.
• Support the Coordinator in weekly staff meetings to ensure smooth operations and team alignment.

GENERAL INFO

Under general supervision, the Service Desk staff provides essential support to the San Bruno RAC by performing front desk operations, assisting members and visitors, and supporting daily facility functions. This temporary, part-time position requires working up to 20 hours per week. The role involves delivering excellent customer service, processing memberships and program registrations, handling payments, and providing information about facility programs and policies. Service Desk staff may also perform facility attendant duties and assist with other tasks as assigned to ensure the smooth operation, safety, and cleanliness of the facility.

UNIVERSAL POSITION DUTIES (Illustrative purposes only)

• Provide friendly and professional customer service to members, participants, and visitors.
• Assist with front desk operations, program registration, and payments.
• Supervise and engage participants in recreational programs, camps, and activities.
• Set up, maintain, and clean activity areas, equipment, and event spaces.
• Monitor facility use and help enforce safety policies and rules.
• Support program operations and collaborate with staff to ensure smooth facility operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support programs, events, and the RAC.

SERVICE DESK (Illustrative purposes only)

• Greet members and guests in a welcoming, professional manner and provide excellent customer service.
• Check members and visitors into the facility and verify membership status.
• Process memberships, renewals, holds, and cancellations according to RAC policies.
• Register patrons for classes, programs, and activities offered at the RAC.
• Answer phones, emails, and in-person inquiries regarding facility schedules, programs, memberships, and policies.
• Process payments for memberships, programs, and facility services while following proper cash-handling procedures.
• Provide accurate information about RAC rules, policies, and services to ensure a safe and positive experience for all patrons.
• Monitor access to the facility and help ensure members and guests follow RAC guidelines.
• Address patron questions or concerns and escalate issues to supervisors when necessary.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and professional service desk area.
• Assist with distributing program information, schedules, and promotional materials.
• Support daily administrative tasks including account updates, data entry, and record keeping.
• Work collaboratively with other RAC staff to ensure smooth daily operations of the facility.
• Assist other RAC teams (Facility Attendants, Programs, Aquatic) and assist with other tasks as assigned to support the overall operation of the RAC.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. This provision may be waived if applicant is under the age of 18.
• One year of experience in a job-related field is preferred.

Skills and Abilities

• Provide friendly, professional, and responsive customer service.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with patrons, staff, and supervisors.
• Operate computer systems and process memberships, registrations, and payments accurately.
• Stay organized and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced front desk environment.
• Work collaboratively with team members and assist other staff or departments as needed to support smooth operations at the San Bruno Recreation and Aquatic Center.
• Ability to obtain a current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

They also provide essential support to recreation programs and services by performing custodial tasks, event setup and teardown, program support, and minor maintenance duties relating to aquatics. This temporary, parttime position requires working up to 20 hours per week. The role involves ensuring the health and safety of aquatic patrons, facilities are clean, safe, and operational while delivering excellent customer service. Performs other duties as assigned.  

UNIVERSAL POSITION DUTIES (Applicable to all roles; Illustrative Purposes Only) 

• Monitor the swimming pool and enforce safety regulations. 
• Assist with aquatics programs, special events, and facility upkeep. 
• Test and maintain pool water chemistry. 
• Set up and tear down for classes, programs, and events. 
• Lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 100 pounds. 
• Work outdoors in sun, rain, or wind as needed.

• Maintain a "rescue-ready" posture and scan assigned zones for drowning emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

LESSON MANAGER (Illustrative Purposes Only) 

• Oversee swim instructors and ensure consistent lesson delivery. 
• Arrive 30 minutes prior to and stay 30 minutes after swim lessons for setup and breakdown. 
• Assist with instructor training and safety drills. 
• Maintain and review lesson records to ensure program quality. 
• Perform facility upkeep and provide customer service. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• All requirements from Swim Instructor, PLUS: 
  Experience: At least 6 months of experience as a Swim Instructor. 

POOL MANAGER -Weekends 

• Supervise lifeguards and enforce safety procedures. 
• Conduct lifeguard rotations and monitor staff performance. 
• Ensure staff maintain a “rescue-ready” posture and remain alert while on duty. 
• Assist in planning and leading weekly and monthly safety trainings.  
• Monitor pool chemicals and water quality. 
• Open, close, and secure facility as needed. 
• Provide customer service, event support, and light facility maintenance. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Minimum Age: 18 
• Experience: At least 6 months of experience as a lifeguard. 
• Preferred Certification: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification.

The Position:

The Senior Lunch Program Coordinator will oversee the daily operations of two senior lunch programs, ensuring high-quality service and a welcoming environment for participants. This role provides leadership and guidance to per diem staff, Title V workers, and volunteers of all ages, serving as a coach and mentor to support their success. Strong attention to grant-related requirements and food safety compliance is essential to maintaining program excellence and accountability.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a valid State of California driver’s license and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This position requires the ability to work independently while receiving direction from a supervisor, as well as the capacity to train, oversee, and collaborate effectively with volunteers and older adults. Strong attention to detail is essential, including the ability to maintain accurate records and submit documentation as required. Proficiency with computers, including experience using Microsoft Word and Excel, is required. Upon hire, the candidate must successfully obtain a State Food Handler Safety Certificate and pass all required background checks. A bilingual pay differential may be available for candidates fluent in identified languages.  Must be available Monday-Friday 10:00am-2:00pm.

Recreation Program Specialist Example Duties:

• Follow reservation protocol/procedure for patrons.
• Review menu provided by caterer, submit nutritional component breakdown to County for grant compliance, and prepare flyers for patron.
• Submit documentation/information associated with County nutrition grant to supervisor.
• Schedule and implement nutritional education for seniors and in-service training for staff and volunteers.
• Serve as liaison with caterer, grant provider and staff/volunteers.
• Implement food safety practices as outlined by the Health Department.
• Prior nutrition experience is desired, but not required. Training will be provided.
