The Department:

The Santa Clara Fire Department was established in 1854 when local residents formed the Columbia Hose Volunteer Fire Company. Today, the city has 9 fire stations (one more in design process) consisting of 8 engines, 2 trucks, 1 rescue/light unit, 1 hazardous materials unit, 1 ambulance and 2 command vehicles. The fire department is comprised of 175 personnel staffed across five divisions and serves a population of approximately 130,000 people spread over 18.4 square miles.  The Fire Administration Division provides management, organization, and support for the various divisions of the fire department actively engaged in the protection of life and property.  The Emergency Medical Services Division is responsible for training personnel to deliver pre-hospital emergency medical services to people who live, work and visit in Santa Clara.  The Community Risk Reduction Division is primarily responsible for fire safety education, fire cause determination, inspection of high hazard occupancies, and fire code enforcement. This division also maintains a vital role as technical consultant to the fire department, the City, and the business community, advising on site construction, process installation, and the safe use and handling of hazardous materials as outlined in federal, state, and local regulations. The Field Operations Division efficiently manages over 11,000 emergency responses annually.  The Training Division provides services to the Fire Department, other City departments, industry, and the community at large.

The Position:

Firefighter I is the entry level classification in the Firefighter series. An incumbent in this classification responds to medical emergencies, fire alarms, performs rescue services, and protects life and property endangered by fire. When qualified and assigned, Firefighter I's may be assigned to paramedic duties. Performs related duties as assigned.

The annual salary range for this position is $104,407.68– $129,909.36. This position will be filled at the minimum of the salary range.

License/Certifications:

• A valid National Registry or State of California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate or proof of course enrollment in a valid EMT program is required at time of application.  Upon appointment to the classification, a valid National Registry or State of California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate is required to be possessed and maintained as a condition of employment.
• A valid California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (CFFJAC) Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card issued within 6 months prior to the date of a conditional offer of employment
• Successful completion of a City of Santa Clara approved Fire Academy is required within 6 months of appointment
• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment. A valid California Class C driver's license with Firefighter endorsement is required within 24 months of appointment 
• All of the listed licenses and certifications must be maintained as a condition of continued employment in this classification for as long as they are required

Desirable Qualifications:

• Demonstrated proficiency in a second language, in accordance with the City's needs
• Military experience, journey-level status in the building construction trades, or other work experience relevant to the fire service
• Community service experience
• Completion of thirty (30) or more units of coursework in Fire Science/Technology at an accredited college
• An associate's or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university
• Possession of a valid California Paramedic (EMT-P) license (required prior to appointment to a Paramedic assignment)
• A valid California Class A or B commercial driver's license

Other Requirements:  

• Typically assigned to a 56-hour workweek (24-hour shifts); may be assigned to a 40-hour workweek as required
• May be required to work odd and unusual hours, including weekends and designated holidays and to be subject to call-back in the performance of job duties
• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment

Physical Requirements:

• At least 21 years of age 
• Able to distinguish primary colors (red, green, amber), each eye free of any abnormal condition or disease which might affect performance of job duties, visual acuity in each eye of at least 20/50 vision (uncorrected) and 20/30 (corrected), and normal night vision 
• Normal hearing without correction in both ears
• Free from disabling speech impediments, disabling neuroses or psychoses, and disabling physical conditions or diseases 
• Strength and physical abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Firefighter I. A valid CFFJAC CPAT card issued within 6 months prior to the date of a conditional offer of employment is required.

The Department: 

The responsibilities of the City Attorney's Office consist of representing and advising the City Council and all City officers in all matters of law pertaining to their offices, representing and appearing on behalf of the City in all legal actions or proceedings, providing the City Council with information and advice regarding ongoing litigation and legislation affecting the City, and staffing City Council meetings and City boards and commission meetings as necessary. The Department:

The Finance Department administers the financial affairs of the City of Santa Clara, including City-owned public utilities. The Position: 

The Finance Department is seeking to recruit a Senior Management Analyst in the Accounting Division to support personnel management, general accounting, and accounts payable. The Senior Management Analyst will also be involved in the financial analysis of special grants and fund accounting and prepare periodic and annual reports for the City, its Agencies and Corporations, and the annual State Controller Reports. The incumbent would be a contributor of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report which includes Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), basic financial statements including notes, and supplementary information.

 

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong accounting background and possess a bachelor's degree in a related field. This position will be required to perform high-level technical support and complex financial analysis related to accounting. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Library and Recreation Department is comprised of two divisions, Library and Recreation & Childcare, that are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of San Rafael residents. The Department’s mission is to enrich the community through discovery, learning, and play, and strives to maximize the delivery of strategically aligned programs and services to provide the highest value for the community.

The current vacancy is at our San Rafael Community Center and Albert Field, which is located in downtown San Rafael and hosts a wide variety of events, programs, and activities.  The community center is a multi-use facility to accommodate groups of all ages, from tiny tots to older adults.  Individuals, groups, or organizations are welcome to rent any part of the facility for meetings, weddings, seminars, banquets, fundraisers or any other events.  The center includes an auditorium/theatre, kitchen, lobby, lounge, and four multi-purpose meeting and activity rooms - three of which can be combined to create a single larger room.  

THE POSITION

The Custodian position will primarily support the Recreation & Childcare Division.  The Division includes three community centers, five children's centers, one cultural center, an aquatics center, two community gardens, three ball fields, a multi-use  turf field, three community parks, 11 neighborhood parks, six pocket parks, and five special use parks.  The Recreation Division is responsible for developing innovative, diverse, and community-centered programs and services at the City's park and recreation facilities.

The Library Department is seeking four (4) Literacy Program Specialists (LPS) to join our team and change the lives of those we serve! This role will be responsible for the coordination of citywide ESL programming, staff, volunteer and instructor training, community partnerships, and oversight of the California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) ESL grant. Resilience Corps Learning Pathway Specialist (Overstrength)*

The College and Career Pathways Unit is seeking a passionate and community-driven Literacy Program Specialist to manage, develop, enhance, and administer the Resilience Corps Learning Pathway program. This vital role focuses on supporting SJPL’s administrative responsibilities associated with the state grant-funded program, including data collection and management. The position will also oversee the worksite experience of participants within the workforce development program who are assigned to SJPL as their worksite and act as a liaison with key community partners. The ideal candidate will be a champion of workforce and education equity, with a strong and demonstrated commitment to building trust with and, uplifting, and empowering young adults. Responsibilities include developing and delivering equity-oriented and diversified training strategies, grant and data management, partnership development, and the development of impactful programs that connect people to opportunities to uplift and empower San José’s youth and young adults.

ESL and Workforce Development Grant Coordinator (Overstrength)*

SJPL is seeking a dynamic, mission-driven leader to coordinate and manage citywide ESL and workforce development programs, aligned with the evolving needs of our diverse community. This role will serve as the project lead for the prestigious Carnegie grant-funded initiative, Libraries as Pillars of Education and Democracy, aimed at strengthening SJPL’s role in civic education, economic mobility, and lifelong learning.  This strategic position blends direct program oversight with cross-sector collaboration, community engagement, volunteer training and grant management to advance equitable access to educational and economic opportunities for all San José residents. As part of the Engineering Services Division, Survey Section of the Public Works Department is responsible for delivering land surveying services on a variety of City projects including street widening/improvements, storm and sanitary facilities, library/community center/fire station sites, and airfield projects. These land surveying services include, but are not limited to the following:  topography, property acquisition, construction staking, pavement marking layout, and monument preservation. 

The Survey Section is currently recruiting to fill two (2) Instrument Person vacancies. An Instrument Person performs a variety of sub-professional surveying and engineering functions of moderate difficulty either on a survey crew in the field or in the Survey Section office. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:  

• Acts as instrument person on a survey party. 

• Records field notes and prepares maps and sketches from survey data. 

• Sets up, adjusts, and operates all types of survey instruments. 

• Provides lead direction and training to other survey personnel. 

• Uses modern, survey-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment. 

• Calculates grades and enters data into field books. 

• Turns angles and extends horizontal line using a total station. 

• Uses the level to obtain vertical control. 

• Uses the level, total station, rod, targets to perform topographic surveying in order to describe the existing features of a piece of land in order that it may be reproduced as a plan map. 

• Locates survey points by measurement, magnetometer and from maps of former surveys. 

• Assist with transferring electronic field data to a PC workstation, processing and interpreting the data, and checking for errors. 

• Assists with producing high-quality, computer-generated topography maps and tables using sophisticated engineering software. 

 

This is the journey level class in a four class surveying series. This class differs from the next higher class of Survey Party Chief in that incumbents of the latter perform sub-professional surveying work and are usually responsible for completing only a segment of a surveying program or project.
