THE POSITION 

Under immediate supervision (Parks Maintenance Worker I) or general supervision (Parks Maintenance Worker II), performs semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work assigned to the parks division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Parks Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or non directly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Parks Maintenance Worker II: This is the full journey level class within the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I by the assignment of the full range of duties assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Handle complaints and answer questions from the public.
2. Perform general electrical, painting, plumbing and carpentry work as needed.
3. Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
4. Oversee the work of community service workers.
5. Maintain logs of daily activities.
6. Assist in other areas as needed.
7. Perform related duties as required.
8. Inspect park grounds, structures, medians and related facilities for safety, appearance, and vandalism; remove graffiti from park surfaces.
9. Clean and clear park grounds, facilities, structures and playing fields of debris and potentially dangerous conditions; set up park for special events.
10. Plant, mow, prune, and maintain turf, trees, shrubs, and plants; clear sites of weeds.
11. Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks in the construction and repair of park and community facilities.
12. Install, maintain, repair, and program irrigation systems.
13. Operate grounds maintenance equipment as well as a variety of hand and power tools.
14. Apply pesticide, herbicide, and other pest management treatments.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Principles and practices of maintenance and repair activities related to area of assignment.

Parks Maintenance Worker I

Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Parks Maintenance Worker II

EXAMINATION PROCESS   Those who meet the employment qualifications and whose strengths and background most closely match the needs of the position will be contacted through the CalOpps email system and invited to an Interview Panel test.  Candidates who achieve a passing score on the Interview Panel will be certified on an Employment List, from which the top 3 scoring candidates will be referred to the hiring department for a final selection interview.

About the Position:  The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) Seasonal Ranger Aide is an entry-level position, which provides the opportunity to learn and perform some duties of a ranger under the guidance of experienced ranger staff. Ranger Aides provide visitor information and assistance, travelling by non-emergency Midpen vehicles and on foot throughout an assigned geographical region. Ranger Aides perform a variety of customer service duties such as educating and informing the public about Midpen land use regulations, public relations and provide general information services, but do not have law enforcement authority.  Ranger Aides will assist with routine maintenance work on Midpen land and facilities and may respond to assist with emergency calls. Requirements: Must have the ability to  learn Midpen lands, pertinent laws and regulations and contact, educate and inform the public about the lands and regulations ; administer first aid and CPR; operate and maintain various power tools and equipment; operate two-way radios; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; and other duties as assigned.

Equivalent to graduation from high school. Six months experience working in a customer service related field.  Some experience or training in a parks settings is desirable.

Schedules:  This is a full-time position. Employees are expected to work full-time (40 hours during the work week); however, school schedules may be accommodated around regular days/hours of operations.  Weekend work (Sat/Sun) is required, with two consistent days off each week (Thursdays/Fridays off).  Incumbents will work an 8-hour workday (plus a 30-minute unpaid meal break). Daily start and end times will be the same for most workdays, typically scheduled within the range of 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Must be willing to work weekends, nights, holidays, or extended shifts and work with exposure to difficult circumstances, including exposure to challenging situations and upset individuals. Seasonal assignments will not exceed 950 hours or 7 months, whichever comes first, and do not include benefits.

Working Conditions: Most work is outdoors within Midpen’s open space lands with exposure to inclement weather conditions. This requires the ability to patrol on foot, off trail, and in rugged terrain.  Also requires the ability to perform related emergency services and maintenance and construction work on Midpen lands. Once trained, Ranger Aides may work alone for parts or all of their shifts. Must wear prescribed District uniform and adhere to strict safety procedures and work habits.

The City of Foster City is recruiting for a part-time Parks Maintenance Worker in the Parks Department. The is a part-time non-benefited position working approximately 20 hours per week, and no benefits are provided. 

Important and Essential Responsibilities 
Performs mowing, weeding, trimming, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, pest control, planting and cleaning of lawns, trees, plants, and parks; removes and disposes of trash and litter; maintains park and maintenance equipment, buildings and facilities; maintains irrigation systems; performs construction and demolition of park facilities, drainage, low-voltage electrical and irrigation systems for new, expanded and renovated park facilities as part of capital improvement projects; performs minor plumbing or building repair duties; supervises and coordinates Sheriff’s Work Program personnel; operates small trucks, dump trucks, ride-on and walk-behind mowing equipment.

Education and Training Guidelines: 
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:

Education: Completion of a job or technical training program in maintenance, construction, or groundskeeping; completion of high school or the equivalent. 

Experience: One year of full time experience in general maintenance, construction, or groundskeeping.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

Summary

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Qualifications

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position, occasionally move about inside the office to access supplies and office machinery, frequently communicate and exchange information, review handwritten, electronic and facsimile documents, and operate a computer and other office productivity machinery. The employee must occasionally move items weighing up to 20 pounds inside the office. MRCA offices are spread among multiple buildings and floors and may require traveling up/down steps.

Required Hours and Location

Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week with some scheduling flexibility. Occasional overtime work in evenings or weekends upon prior approval by supervisor. The position will work out of the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens but may occasionally be required to travel to various other locations. Offices at the River Center are spread among multiple buildings and floors. Remote working or a hybrid schedule may be allowed, subject to supervisor approval.

The Seasonal Ranger Assistant falls under the general direction of the Chief Ranger and will support Park Staff and Rangers in maintaining the natural beauty and safety of the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority’s various parks and open spaces. Supervision

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Maintain electronic and mechanical pay stations.
• Collection and transport of money from pay stations.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to hike, run, bend, lift, stoop, kneel, reach and climb, lift and carry items weighing up to 60 pounds for a distance up to 50 feet both indoors and outdoors, constantly work in outdoor weather conditions and frequently move about work sites, Incumbents should have physical strength, endurance and agility; be mentally alert and physically sound; hearing and vision sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Required Hours and Location

This position is seasonal with an assigned 10-hour shift on Fridays and optional 10-hour shifts on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday as needed.  This position will terminate at or before 900 hours and is intended to run concurrently with the Background Investigation and Hiring process for Ranger Trainee, for Seasonal Ranger Assistants who communicate an interest in doing so within the introductory period of the season. Must be available to work at various locations.

 

Public Contact

As public parklands, the majority of MRCA properties are open to the general public during operating hours. This position will have contact with members of the public in public areas such as parking lots and shared public/office restrooms, and during public meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Have a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• One (1) year of experience in customer service, law enforcement, parking enforcement, EMS, or other related field is recommended for appointment.

Training and Certification

• Certificate in First Aid/CPR for the professional rescuer or equivalent, or ability to attain upon employment.
