THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and fleet building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal. Work is closely supervised; work methods are explained in specific terms and work is subject to frequent review. 

Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscaping, street and sidewalk maintenance, and building maintenance, as well as safety practices and precautions to be used in work.
• Skill in operating hand and power tool equipment such as rakes, pick and shovel, etc.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and to follow oral and written instructions. Intermittently, sit while studying or listening to training; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing maintenance, repair, or installation tasks; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry heavy weights up to 90 lbs.; work in conditions of various outdoor exposure.
• Capable of working independently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Driving a city truck is required for the position and the applicant must have an acceptable driving record, subject to California DMV pull records.
• Ability to work Saturday and/or Sunday shifts.  Hours are 7AM-4:30PM and may fluctuate due to operational needs.

The City is seeking a Maintenance Operations Supervisor to oversee the maintenance and operations of the City streets, storm water systems, sidewalks, facilities and building systems, plumbing and irrigation, landscaping, and parks within the Operations+ Environmental Services Division of the Public Works Department. This is a full supervisory-level class in the Maintenance series that exercises independent judgment on diverse and specialized maintenance and repair functions with accountability and ongoing decision-making responsibilities associated with the work.

The Maintenance Operations Supervisor is responsible for leading, planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of the Maintenance team. The Maintenance Operations Supervisor provides technical knowledge on a wide variety of topics including streets, stormwater systems, sidewalks, fleet, HVAC, electrical, facilities, environmental compliance (in particular regarding generators and fuel tanks), landscaping, irrigation, plumbing, and parks. Key responsibilities include planning and coordinating comprehensive maintenance programs, bidding, monitoring and inspecting repair work and service contracts, and extensive procurement administration utilizing the City’s purchasing and contract management systems.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic Public Works leader with a service-first mindset and demonstrated commitment to safety, staff development, training, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with computer-based work and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook and Excel. The ideal candidate will have worked in or closely with public agencies, preferably in a public works department setting. Individuals who are flexible, confident, curious, open-minded, and solution-oriented will be a good fit for this dynamic role. This role works collaboratively with other divisions within the Public Works Department, other City Departments, outside agencies, and community members. This position plays a pivotal role with overseeing programs, projects, goals, and policies/procedures to provide exceptional service delivery to the community.

Under the supervision of the Fire Marshal, is responsible for performing plan review, inspections, and other duties as required.  The position will also be involved to varying degrees with public education, public relations, exterior hazard abatement, engine company pre-fire planning, record keeping, and report writing.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
This position is responsible for the review of plans, to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local fire safety laws, ordinances, and codes.  Although not all inclusive, the following serve to represent the various types of plans to be reviewed: planning applications; applications for the subdivision of land; site plans for access and water supply; building and tenant improvement plans; fire protection systems including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, kitchen hood extinguishing systems; and other types of plan reviews that are part of various fire code permitted activities.  

Other duties include attending meetings with other local government agencies such as planning and building departments, architects, contractors, developers, and the general public.  Utilizes the District’s citation process when appropriate and when other means of gaining voluntary compliance are unsuccessful. This position is responsible for conducting in-house training and updating of field inspection staff members on changes occurring in codes enforced by the District.  This position is also responsible for the formulation of standardized field inspection guidelines and record keeping systems for construction projects. Provides supervision, work direction, and technical assistance as directed. Participates in the code change process at the state and international levels. Utilizes tools and technology identified by the District related to performance of tasks. Supports emergency operations as requested and appropriate.

The position is responsible for performing inspections of both new and existing buildings; witnessing various tests required for sophisticated fire protection equipment and verifying proper operation and compliance with applicable codes and standards; prepares necessary correspondence, reports, and records; with regards to projects, confers with architects, engineers, developers, etc.; attends training courses and meetings of professional organizations as directed; performs surveys of fire hazards and processes complaints; conducts and participates in public education and public relations programs; performs other related duties as directed.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Electrician in the Public Works Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to perform installation, maintenance, and repair on a wide variety of electrical equipment used in street lighting, traffic signal control, sewage lift stations, HVAC and automation, building power distribution, fire alarm, and related systems and equipment; operate a variety of hand and power tools; and perform related work as assigned. The Electrician has responsibility for working in all facets of the electrical trade, ensuring safe practices and operation of equipment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years of progressively responsible and difficult electrical experience.

Other requirements include obtaining a valid Class "B" California driver's license prior to the completion of the one-year probationary period.  Candidates must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities.  When driving on City business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.  Candidates must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds; must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions; must be willing to work from aerial buckets and underground in confined places and with possible exposure to potentially hazardous substances, with proper protection; must be willing to work overtime and off-hours shifts in emergency situations; must be willing to be on stand-by on a rotating basis; must possess good color vision.

Under general direction, the Planning Manager performs a variety of management and complex planning functions which includes, but is not limited to, supervision of the Planning Division staff; management of complex land use projects and plans and related tasks; presentations before the City Council, Planning Commission and other City commissions, committees and community groups; serving as a member of the City’s Management Team and performing related tasks as required.

 

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

This is a single position management classification reporting to the Economic and Community Development Director. The incumbent is responsible for managing the activities of a division engaged in current and long-range planning, zoning, and development services. The incumbent has considerable latitude in the application of departmental policy and follows general guidelines or professional and administrative standards in accomplishing assignments; the incumbent is expected to identify policy issues and work with other staff to develop options and recommend solutions.

• Participates in regional advisory groups including: Alameda County Transportation Commission Technical Advisory Committee, MTC Regional Advisory Working Group, East Bay Energy Watch Strategic Advisory Committee, Energy Council Technical Advisory Group, and Spare the Air Southern Alameda County Resource Team;
• Manages the City's sustainability efforts.
• Prepares written reports; may serve as secretary to the Planning Commission, the zoning administrator and act as Economic and Community Development Director in the absence of the Director.

POLICE OFFICER - Academy Graduate - $8,419 to $11,416 per month (up to $13,128 with incentives)

Police Officers can serve in patrol, traffic, investigations, and K-9 assignments. Other collateral opportunities include instructor positions (Firearms and Force Options Team), Regional SWAT, Mobile Field Force, 10851 Task Force, CSI, Regional Major Accident Investigation Team, Driving Team with firearms and force options team, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), FBI Safe Streets Task Force, SET Team, Drone Team, Social Media Team, Community Resource Officer, School Resource Officer, and Field Training Officers. A Dispatcher II is a civilian employee of the Police Department who performs a variety of tasks in the Department’s Support Services Division. The Dispatcher II acts as the Department’s primary dispatcher, receiving and relaying incoming calls for emergency and non-emergency assistance; dispatching police units; operating a variety of telecommunications equipment including radio, telephone, and computer-aided dispatch systems; status monitoring, records and file maintenance in a computer-aided environment; and entry level dispatch training. A Dispatcher II may be assigned to work various hours, shifts, holidays, weekends and overtime.

Additional duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: prioritize requests for service based upon available resources, receive radio requests and handle accordingly, type, process and file a wide variety of reports and materials including memos, letters, complaints, declarations, warrants, citations, crime and traffic reports. Assists Department personnel and the public in person and by phone performing record checks, collecting fees and mailing requested reports to outside agencies in accordance with established regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Have a combination of education and work experience, including a minimum of 1 year of dispatch work; 2 years general office work involving typing of varied materials, public contact, general filing and basic record keeping; type at least 40 wpm (net). Have knowledge of business English, spelling; modern office practices and procedures; record keeping. Ability to dispatch police units quickly and effectively; work under pressure; exercise independent judgment; work with minimal supervision; make sound decisions in emergency situations; learn assigned clerical tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routine; write English legibly; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; operate computer-aided dispatch system, 911 emergency telephone, and other multi-line telephone systems, various law enforcement telecommunications systems, radio console with headsets and handsets, computer keyboards, cameras, intercoms, security. • Salary: $6,987 to $9,050 per month. Placement within the range depends on experience and qualifications.

THE POSITION: This limited term position supports the Youth and Family Services Bureau (YFSB) in the Police Department to strengthen and enhance services provided to Hayward families to keep youth positively engaged in the community and out of the juvenile justice system. The Lead Program Assistant works with YSFB mental health counselors to provide case management, life skills training, diversion, restorative justice, and other services.
The limited term position is dependent on ongoing funding for the program. Funding has already been secured through FY2026 (June 30, 2026) with the possibility of an extension or permanent funding in FY 2027.

The Lead Program Assistant is a Citywide classification; current vacancies exist in the Police Department however future citywide vacancies may be filled from this recruitment. You are:

THE POSITION:

This is a division head management position at the Hayward Executive Airport, reporting to the Airport Manager. The incumbent is responsible for the management of the business and accounting functions at the airport and provides second-line supervision and direction of staff within the Airport Division. This position is distinguished from the Airport Operations Supervisor classification which is responsible for the direct supervision of staff performance of Airside and Landside operations and maintenance tasks at the airport. Under general direction, the Airport Business Supervisor, oversees the airport business function including budget preparation, the real property program, tenant compliance with contract provisions, collections, preparation of grant applications, and other administrative duties.

The Airport Business Supervisor is a key administrative position in the Airport division of Hayward Public Works Department. The ideal candidate is detail oriented, discrete and a multitasker able to meet tight deadlines when required. They are a networker, able to build bridges with internal and external customers. They enjoy a variety of tasks, work well independently, and they are up for a challenge. They are interested in supporting the airport manager and the work of the division. They come to the position with the skills and experience necessary to perform the specific task outlined below.

 
 

 

Essential Duties

What you will do: 
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Assist the Airport Manager with the negotiation of commercial lease agreements.

Prepare draft leases at the request of the Airport Manager.
 
Oversee preparation of the annual airport budget.
 
Maintain a detailed database of all commercial and individual airport tenants.
 
Monitor tenant compliance with contract provisions.
 
Monitor account receivables and collect past due amounts.
 
Prepare annual business permits and monitor tenant compliance.

Perform appraisals and provide estimated current values on real property.
 
Administer the City hangar waiting list.
 
Prepare Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Caltrans grant applications and related documents.
 
Monitor and submit required FAA reports for the DBE program.
 
Performs related work as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

You have:  

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
 
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
 
Experience:  Five (5) years of experience in real property management, appraisals, negotiations, and budgeting.  Including two (2) years of supervisory or lead experience.  Experience in an airport business office preferred.
 
Education:  Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major work in Public or Business Administration, or a closely related field.
 
Licenses and Certificates:  Possession of either an FAA Private Pilot Certificate or standing as a Certified Member (CM) of the American Association of Airport Executives is desirable.
