What You’ll Do

The Public Works Maintenance Leadworker performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of sewer infrastructure, road ways, sidewalks, and storm conveyance system. The Leadworker assigns and participates in the work of maintenance crews, operates power driven equipment, and performs related work as required.   This position is responsible for lead supervision of a sewer, street, storm or traffic safety maintenance field crew. The Novato Sanitary District is seeking a highly motivated, and goal-driven individual to join our Collection System team as a Collection System Worker (CSW). The District will hire at the level of CSW I or CSW II depending on skills, certifications and licenses held by candidates in the pool of qualified applicants. 

The CSW performs a wide variety of tasks associated with the maintenance of wastewater collection and reclamation systems, including inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and repairs on lines, pump stations, and treatment facilities. The successful CSW I candidate will possess experience in general maintenance tasks, including the safe and effective operation of a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Possession of a commercial driver's license is highly desirable. Experience working with sewer cleaning trucks and equipment is also a plus. The successful CSW II candidate will have three or more years of experience in collection system maintenance. Experience in pump station maintenance is highly desirable.

We are seeking a hands-on, mechanics and electronics savvy Instrumentation Technician to join our Public Works Sanitation division. This position maintains, repairs, inspects, plans, modifies, designs, installs and calibrates instrumentation, electrical, and SCADA control systems for wastewater treatment facilities; maintains a spare parts inventory; and trains operations staff in the understanding of instrumentation and control systems related to the process operation.

• Full-time regular position, 9/80 schedule with every other Monday or Friday off.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in electronics or a related field.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I

($22.13– 28.33 per hour)

The City of Chowchilla is seeking a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I for the operation and maintenance of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I is a journey-level class in the Wastewater Treatment Plant series, which normally works under general supervision, performing a group of related duties according to established procedures.  This position reports to the Utility Systems or Wastewater System Supervisor and does not supervise. 

THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and fleet building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal. Work is closely supervised; work methods are explained in specific terms and work is subject to frequent review. 

Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscaping, street and sidewalk maintenance, and building maintenance, as well as safety practices and precautions to be used in work.
• Skill in operating hand and power tool equipment such as rakes, pick and shovel, etc.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and to follow oral and written instructions. Intermittently, sit while studying or listening to training; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing maintenance, repair, or installation tasks; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry heavy weights up to 90 lbs.; work in conditions of various outdoor exposure.
• Capable of working independently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Driving a city truck is required for the position and the applicant must have an acceptable driving record, subject to California DMV pull records.
• Ability to work Saturday and/or Sunday shifts.  Hours are 7AM-4:30PM and may fluctuate due to operational needs.

The Public Works Maintenance Superintendent (Streets) is a management-level role within the Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. This position is responsible for overseeing the operation of construction and maintenance equipment, street and sidewalk repairs, street drainage system maintenance, and graffiti abatement.

Key duties for this role include:

• Overseeing the operation of construction and maintenance equipment.

• Managing street and sidewalk repairs.

• Maintaining street drainage systems.

• Leading graffiti abatement efforts.

The Public Works Department is seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented Street Maintenance Worker I/II for the Street division. Depending on the candidate's qualifications, the vacancy will be filled at either Street Maintenance Worker Level 1 or Level 2. The successful candidate will work at the City’s Municipal Service Center in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks.

Primary responsibilities:

• Breaks and removes concrete using a hydraulic breaker and handwork
• Repair or replace cracked, raised, sunken, or otherwise damaged sidewalks, curbs, and gutters
• Perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, repair, and cleaning of streets, curbs, gutters, storm drains, and related structures

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under close supervision, the Seasonal Operations Aide provides entry-level support to an assigned division of the Public Works Department. This temporary role (up to 180 days) offers hands-on experience in operations, assisting staff with tasks such as maintenance, repair, cleaning, construction, and light equipment use. Duties may vary by program area and can include manual labor and tool handling.

Examples of Essential Job Functions (may include but are not limited to):

• Under direction, assist in the maintenance and upkeep of City facilities including but not limited to: parks, fields, SLP’s, streets, buildings, sewers, pools, playgrounds, and others.
• Under direction, assist in the construction or installation of City infrastructure such as curbs, sidewalks, paths, railings, stairs, signs, etc.

Parks Division job responsibilities include: trash collection, graffiti removal, weed removal, irrigation repairs, operating battery powered blowers, weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, mowers and other equipment and tasks as needed to maintain City parks, landscapes, vegetation, trees and additional tasks as needed.

Streets Division job responsibilities include: trash collection, graffiti removal, drainage facility clearing and repairs, street sign repairs and replacement, road and curb paint work, pothole repairs, asphalt repairs and additional tasks as needed.

THE POSITION
To perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance of City-owned buildings, equipment and facilities.

The purpose of this recruitment is to hire a Temporary / Part-Time position. Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Facility Maintenance Worker I position may be considered for employment as an Intern. Temporary / Part-Time employees work no more than 130 hours per month AND 960 hours per fiscal year. Typical work schedule will be three 8-hour shifts per week, excluding weekends and evenings.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
This position will perform semi-skilled tasks in a variety of light construction and maintenance activities. The Ideal Candidate will be customer-friendly and be a solutions-oriented professional who is flexible in dealing with shifting priorities, have good time management skills, and possess the ability to work effectively in the absence of supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Maintain and repair City buildings, equipment and facilities by performing a variety of semiskilled carpentry, plumbing,  painting, heating/air conditioning, mechanical repair and electrical work as necessary. Inspect City buildings to locate conditions indicating the need for repairs and maintenance; assist in establishing and implementing preventative maintenance programs. Operate and maintain a variety of heavy tools and equipment, including small power and hand tools. Work cooperatively with others. Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Remodel and repair a variety of building components such as counters, tables, desks, bookshelves, cabinets, partitions, walls, windows and doors; boilers, water pumps, exhaust fans, compressors, and other water and sewage system plumbing as required. Perform electrical work such as wiring and rewiring; replace switches, ballast and receptacles as required. Prepare simple activity and related reports; maintain inventory and work records as required. Requisition supplies and materials. Perform general janitorial duties as needed. Perform other facility maintenance duties as assigned.

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Six (6) months of work experience in carpentry, electrical and maintenance work is desirable.
License and Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License required upon hire.

BENEFITS
The pay cycle is bi-weekly. With the exception of worker's compensation coverage and sick leave accrual, no other benefits compensations are provided. Employees must contribute 1.45% of salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan in accordance with Federal Law.
