What You’ll Do

The City of San Mateo is a very progressive city that encourages staff and resident engagement to develop positive solutions that meet the demands of the community and regulatory landscape. 

The successful candidate will coordinate, promote, expand, and implement best practices of the City’s Solid Waste and Recycling Programs within the Public Works Department; such as promoting and monitoring proper sorting by employees at all City facilities to  reduce contamination in the waste stream, reducing instances of illegal dumping, and  monitoring  the hazardous waste created by the City as a small quantity generator. You will monitor contractor compliance and resolve performance issues; will be a liaison between the public and the waste hauler to ensure service levels and the requirements of the exclusive franchise agreement are being met; and will perform a variety of professional and technical level tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. You will plan, execute, and coordinate many special events with the public and other City departments as well as the City’s “Team Up to Clean Up” anti-litter and waste sorting education and outreach program.

The Officers are generalists who typically handle cases from the first response, through investigation, and onto final disposition. In addition, Officers frequently assist the Chief of Police with administrative duties and consult closely with him in the formulation of Departmental policies, procedures, and tactics. San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department

The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department commenced operations on January 13, 2019, and serves the cities of Belmont, Foster City, and San Mateo as a Joint Powers Authority. The Department collectively has ten engines and two trucks operating out of nine fire stations. What You’ll Do

• Interpret and enforce provisions of fire prevention and fire safety laws, ordinances, and other regulations.
• Perform periodic inspections of new and existing buildings, structures and installations requiring fire clearances; identify fire hazards; recommend corrective actions; perform follow-up inspections to see that corrective actions have been taken.
• Investigate complaints pertaining to violation of fire prevention laws, issue correction orders as necessary.
• Investigate fires; secure fire scenes; identify types of fires; investigate causes of fire; collect, prepare, and present evidence; interview witnesses and suspects; write fire investigations; testify in court when required.
• Provide information to the public concerning the fire prevention practices and procedures; develop and conduct training programs and group presentations relative to fire prevention and fire investigation.
• Instruct fire suppression crews about code interpretation and inspection techniques regarding fire prevention.
• Draw and prepare diagrams of buildings for pre-fire planning and fire inspections.
• Check building plans for code compliance, consult with architects and developers regarding problems and solutions.

Position Duties  

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is currently seeking to fill one (1) Principal Engineer/Architect position in the City Facilities and Architectural Services (CFAS) Division. This is a limit-dated position that is anticipated to be funded through June 30, 2027, subject to further extension as appropriate. However, should this position be discontinued through the budget process, the city may seek to place you in other internal job opportunities based on your previous work experience. 

Salary range(s) for this classification is $179,076.82 - $218,123.62 annually. This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.  

The Principal Engineer/Architect will support the Library Department (LD) in leading the coordination for the Library Facilities and Customer Experience Planning. This individual will play a key leadership role in driving critical infrastructure initiatives, including supporting the implementation of the California State Library Building Forward Infrastructure Grant projects and managing capital and facilities planning processes in collaboration with the LD and consultants. This individual will act as a leader, ensuring timely and effective project execution, and delivering results that meet organizational and state funding objectives.  

Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Principal Engineer/Architect will require the ability to extensively collaborate across the LD, the DPW, Planning, Building and Code Enforcement (PBCE) and other contractors/vendors, while maintaining adherence to budgets, timelines, and plans. Outstanding leadership, a high degree of accountability, and the ability to establish an excellent working relationship with all stakeholders are required to be successful in this position.  

Key Responsibilities 

• Lead the design and construction of major public works projects, in partnership with the Library Department.  

• Lead a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, architects, technicians, and inspectors to deliver high-quality, cost-effective, and consistent services. 

• Oversee engineering/architectural or other technical research; review, analyze, and prepare recommendations to Senior and Executive staff regarding project and/or program scope or objectives. 

• Direct and coordinate the preparation of cost estimates and project and/or program budgets; monitor budgets and schedules for performance. 

• Consult with Senior and Executive staff, contractors, other departments, and consultants to plan, design, and construct major engineering/architectural and/or other technical projects. 

• Direct and coordinate the creation, planning, and management of capital budgets and staffing plans to successfully deliver capital projects. 

• Oversee the planning and execution of the procurements of design consultants and construction contracts. 

• Partner with the department’s other executive staff to lead transformation, training, and other process improvement efforts in the City’s capital improvement program. 

• Prepare technical reports and correspondence as required.

In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to: 

• Bachelor’s Degree
• Two (2) years of full-time progressively responsible experience providing professional administrative support.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience performing duties in support of Boards of Directors, Councils, or Commissions that operate under the Brown Act.

The Dixon Fire Department is opening their Firefighter/Paramedic Recruit position for someone to attend the Fire Academy in January 2026. The "Firefighter/Paramedic Recruit" is an entry-level classification designed for recruits with a current paramedic license to gain firefighting, fire rescue, and fire prevention skills and training necessary through an accredited Fire Academy. DEFINITION
Under general direction of the Human Resources Director, the Human Resources Manager oversees and coordinates the day-to-day human resources operations and is expected to perform professional human resources and administrative work. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
The Human Resources Manager (HRM) is a single position classification in the Human Resources Department responsible for the supervision of staff in a number of program areas including recruitment and selection, classification and compensation, benefits administration, disability and leave management, employee and labor relations, investigations, risk management, human resource information systems and record keeping and retention.

Education: A bachelor's degree with a major in Business or Public Administration, Social or Behavioral Science, Human Resources Management, Organizational Development, or related.

And

Experience: five (5) years of full-time human resources experience including at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Additional years of experience in supervising others.
• Possession of a professional credential in Human Resources, such as PHR/SHRM-CP, PHR/SPHR or program specific credentials such as L&D, ARM, CEBS, CPSP, or similar.
• Experience working in a public agency is highly desirable.
