The Library and Recreation Department is comprised of two divisions, Library and Recreation & Childcare, that are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of San Rafael residents. The Department’s mission is to enrich the community through discovery, learning, and play, and strives to maximize the delivery of strategically aligned programs and services to provide the highest value for the community.

The Childcare division offers programs with developmentally appropriate curriculum with a wide variety of activities and experiences that support and enhance children's cognitive, social, emotional and physical growth.  Our professional staff provides a balance of child-initiated and teacher-led activities designed to support children's individual growth and development in a safe and enriching environment.  

THE POSITION

• Assist in planning and implementing age appropriate curriculum, activities and events.
• Provide continuous supervision to children in day-to-day activities; ensures health and safety of children.
• Monitor behavioral patterns and assists with assessment and child development profiles.
• Evaluate needs of children, staff and site in order to maintain a safe and healthy environment for children and staff.
• Schedule parent conferences to discuss children's development and concerns; work with family to devise learning and development strategies as necessary.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Child Care Instructor I:

• Completion of a minimum of  six (6) units of Early Child Education (ECE) courses and currently working toward the completion of twelve (12) units of ECE courses.
• Six (6) months working with children.
• AA in recreation, education, or related field preferred

Child Care Instructor II:

• Completion of twelve (12) Early Childhood Education (ECE) courses.
• One (1) year working with children in a group setting.
• B.A. in recreation, education, or related field preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Possession of a valid California Driver's License preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The San Rafael Public Works Department (DPW) is committed to providing the highest standards of service delivery to its citizens as it works to build, maintain, and update the City's civic infrastructure.  Public Works is comprised of approximately 50 employees with a general budget of $33 million and a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget that ranges between $15-$30 million depending on the City's annual infrastructure needs.

THE POSITION

The Parks Maintenance Worker I/II performs a variety of tasks involving the maintenance, repair, improvement, and cleaning of parks, park buildings, recreation facilities, and related areas.  We currently  have three (3) vacancies to fill at either the I or II level.

We are seeking a skilled parks maintenance professionals with experience in landscaping, irrigation, and groundskeeping.  The ideal candidate can operate equipment, perform routine maintenance and repairs, and is knowledgeable in plant care and safe work practices while working effectively in a team.

• Maintains lawns, turf, ball fields, and landscaped areas through mowing, edging, pruning, trimming, weeding, planting, and irrigation.
• Cleans and maintains parks, restrooms, walkways, patios, and public areas, including litter and debris removal.
• Maintains and repairs irrigation and sprinkler systems, plumbing, and park facilities affected by vandalism.
• Maintains ball fields, swimming pools, and related recreational facilities.
• Operates and performs routine maintenance on landscaping and construction equipment, including mowers, trenchers, dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, sweepers, and vehicles with trailers.
• Performs basic construction and repair work, including concrete preparation and finishing.
• Assists with emergency public works repairs, specific events, and cross-department support as needed.
• May handle fertilizers, pesticides, and related application equipment.
• Performs related duties as required.  

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Parks Maintenance Worker I:

• High School Diploma or its equivalent and ability to read, speak, and write English.
• Previous work experience involving groundskeeping, horticulture, and irrigation is preferred.

Parks Maintenance Worker II:

• High School Diploma or its equivalent and ability to read, speak, and write English.
• Three (3) years of work experience involving groundskeeping.

Incumbents assigned to this job classification (either level), are subject to Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Regulations if they possess a Class B driver's license and opt to utilize the license on the job.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The San Rafael Fire Department is an all-risk fire agency with 69 highly trained operational firefighters providing services in firefighting, Advanced Life Support (ALS) response, ambulance transport, technical rescue, hazardous material response, disaster response, fire prevention, and community preparedness.

THE POSITION

The San Rafael Fire Department is seeking a full-time Administrative Analyst to join our Administrative Division.  At the direction of the Department's Senior Management Analyst, this position provides professional administrative support to the Fire Department, with responsibilities including contracting, grant management, principles in accounting and other administrative duties.

The ideal candidate will be a blend of the following skills and experience:

• Background and knowledge of accounting and budgeting including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and budgeting.
• Experience with managing contracts, risk management, and the RFP process.

• Equivalent to an Associate's degree with college course work in public administration, business administration, or a related field, AND
• Three (3) years of progressively responsible administrative support experience, preferably within a public agency.

Under the general direction from the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Specialist – Enrichment is responsible to act as a liaison to the Department’s flourishing enrichment (after school) program and ensure the smooth operation of programming for preschool and elementary aged classes both on and off-site. This includes the elementary-aged afterschool programs Supervised Play at Old Mill Elementary School and Center of Play at the Mill Valley Community Center. This position requires a high level of customer service, attention to detail, marketing prowess, evaluation and oversight of programs, independent contractors, and part-time staff, and the ability to build relationships throughout the community. The Recreation Specialist- Enrichment will assist other staff in the Youth and Teens Division for seasonal programs as needed. 

The ideal candidate will have significant experience working in elementary aged programs, ideally in a fast-paced and dynamic setting. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in early childhood education, recreation, or a related field with a minimum of two years of experience in delivering kindergarten, elementary and/or youth programming, etc. is preferred.

NOTE: This is a part-time, non-benefitted position for the Mill Valley Arts and Recreation Department.  

DEFINITION: Communicate with participants, families, instructors, staff and elementary school sites to coordinate class schedules, registrations, and program needs for the TK-5th grade After School Enrichment programs. Hours are approximately Monday-Friday, 12:30pm-5:30pm. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 

• Facilitates recreation activities for specific age group: Transitional Kindergarten through 5th Grade. 

• Organizes, implements, directs, supervises and/or promotes specific programs and activities. 

• Processes program payments promptly and thoroughly. 

• Programs enrichment classes for each season (Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer).  

• Participates in the preparation and administration of assigned program budget. 

• Works with local School District, PTAs, and community groups in developing, promoting, and providing programs and activities. 

• Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 

• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively and professionally with schools, staff, parents, and children. 

• Monitors the day-to-day operations of the programs, including making site visits, handling and resolving complaints not requiring the attention of a supervisor and ensuring that programs and events have required materials, staff, and supplies. 

• Assists in the evaluation of programming including conducting customer satisfaction surveys and analyzing reports on program effectiveness. 

• Enforces safety and operating procedures and provides for maintenance needs including compliance with health and safety codes. 

• Creation and development of new programs, as needed. 

• Accurately maintain attendance records. 

• The ability to speak English clearly and understandably. 

• Perform related duties as required. 

• Must be able to lift 50lbs.
