What's the Role and What You'll Do

We are recruiting applicants who are currently attending, or have graduated from, a California POST Basic Academy. The Police Officer's primary responsibility is to promote community order and protect life and property through the preservation of the public peace, prevention of crime, and enforcement of laws. The Police Department is committed to the philosophy of Community Policing. Our officers and their approach to Police work reflect this commitment. At the commencement of employment, Police Officer Academy Graduates will begin their field training program with the Mountain View Police Department. The Essentials

 

  • 40 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college (college units must be completed by time of application)
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license (possession of license will be required at time of appointment)
  • U.S. citizenship status or permanent resident alien status with eligibility for, and in the process of obtaining, U.S. citizenship
  • Vision and hearing capability consistent with POST
  • A minimum of 21 years of age
In addition to meeting the above requirements, the following attachments are required to be submitted at time of application: 

Police Officer Trainee - Academy Enrollee
  • A letter from the academy indicating current enrollment and anticipated academy graduation date
  • For out-of-state applicants, a California POST letter issued within the past 5 months indicating: 
    • You have been evaluated and meet the requirements for the Basic Course Waiver Process
    • You are eligible to attend and complete a California POST-certified Requalification Course in person in California
Police Officer - Academy Graduate 
  • Completion of a California Basic Police Academy with a current certification obtained within the past three years, or
  • For out-of-state applicants, a Basic Course Waiver issued within the past three years

Application screening will be part of the examination process. Based on the application screening and a pre-employment history questionnaire, those candidates with the most relevant qualifications will be invited to an oral board panel (weighted 100 percent).Candidates passing the oral board interview process will be placed on an eligibility list.  Finalist department interviews will be required. Depending on the number of applications, the above process may be altered.        


Salary Information: 

Police Officer - Academy Graduate pay ranges from $5,503.69 - $6,683.39 biweekly ($143,096 - $173,768 annually) 

Police Officer Trainee pay is $4,971.65 biweekly ($129,263 annually)
