Description

The City of Mill Valley is pleased to welcome applications for Maintenance Worker II - Streets.

As a Maintenance Worker II in our Streets Division, you will help keep Mill Valley’s streets and infrastructure safe, functional, and looking their best. Working under general supervision, you will take on a range of skilled and hands-on tasks including paving, concrete work, storm drain cleaning, and street repair.

Your day might include operating construction equipment, mixing and pouring concrete for sidewalks or curbs, clearing debris from storm drains ahead of the rainy season, or resurfacing a neighborhood street. You will also help direct traffic around work zones, respond to emergency repair needs, and may lead small crews on specific assignments.

This is active, outdoor work that requires physical stamina, attention to safety, and a strong sense of pride in public service. You will work across the city’s neighborhoods and infrastructure, helping maintain the streets and public right-of-ways that residents and visitors rely on every day.

Examples of essential duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to): 

  • Operates and conducts essential maintenance using power-driven street and construction machinery, encompassing auxiliary equipment like gravel spreaders. Tasks include surface preparation for paving, cement mixing, pavement demolition, and operation of concrete cutting equipment.

  • Loads, transports and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber and other materials.

  • Clean storm drains.

  • Performs concrete work.

  • Directs traffic, erects barricades and traffic signs.

  • Participates in constructing or resurfacing streets with permanent paving materials.

  • Leads small crews in performing of specific tasks.

  • Cleans and cares for tools and equipment and responds to emergency calls.

Ideal Candidate

The person who will excel in this position is responsible, safety-conscious, and brings a positive attitude to hands-on, outdoor work. They should enjoy working with their hands and contributing to the upkeep and improvement of streets, sidewalks, storm drains, and other essential public infrastructure.

Ideally, the qualified candidate will have several years of experience operating motorized equipment commonly used in heavy construction, along with at least two years of experience in public works construction and maintenance. This includes hands-on experience with light power equipment such as tractors and rollers, as well as skills in building trades-related construction and repair. Additionally, the candidate should have at least one year of experience operating heavy construction equipment similar to that used in street maintenance work.

Expertise in streets, construction, and maintenance is highly desirable.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Education and experience comprised of completion of the twelfth grade or GED
  • Two (2) years of experience in public works construction and maintenance
  • One (1) year of experience operating heavy construction equipment similar to that used in street maintenance work
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and work in a variety of outdoor settings 
  • Enjoys the outdoors and working with their hands
