Description

DEFINITION

Maintenance Worker I

Under general supervision, to perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair
of City streets, and storm drains, park and recreation landscaped areas, and other public works;

 

Maintenance Worker II

Under general supervision, to supervise a small crew and participate in the
maintenance and repair of City streets, sanitary sewers and storm drains, park and recreation landscaped areas, and other public works;

Maintenance Worker I

This is the journey level class in the maintenance worker series.

 

Maintenance Worker II

This is the lead/supervisory level class in the maintenance worker series

Receive general supervision from Maintenance Worker II.

 

Maintenance Worker II

Leads/supervises Maintenance Worker I. Receive general supervision from
higher-level management.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

 

Maintenance Worker I

  • Participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, gutters, sewers, storm drains, catch basins, barricades, sidewalks, parks, landscaped areas, and recreation equipment and facilities;
  • Pours and finishes concrete;
  • Operates cleaning equipment;
  • Cleans out catch-basins and other storm-related preventive maintenance and removes litter from parks and other facilities;
  • Operates compressors and pneumatic tools;
  • Operates and makes minor repairs and adjustments to heavy power-driven equipment;
  • Constructs forms for and does cement work;
  • Performs brick work and building construction and maintenance work;
  • Builds retaining walls;
  • Repairs irrigation systems, tools, recreation and maintenance equipment; drives a truck, tractor, gang mower, power mower, and other light motorized construction equipment; plants, waters, mows, prunes, sprays and maintains hedges, lawns, trees, flowers and shrubs;
  • Applies, tamps and rakes asphalt and related street construction and maintenance tasks;
  • Repairs and replaces sewer and storm drainage pipe
  • Performs basic carpentry, painting, plumbing and pipe-fitting work;
  • Performs excavations and shoring for CCTV and underground utilities
  • Performs street traffic control and sign painting which may include inventory,
  • Operates storm water pumps
  • May assist in purchasing
  • Uses computer plotting machine
  • Fill potholes in roadway
  • Removes sand from roadways
  • Welds
  • Mows and weeding lawns
  • Plants and trims trees and bushes
  • Drags and stripes athletic fields;
  • Installs and maintains irrigation systems
  • Applies herbicides.
  • Opens, cleans and sanitizes restrooms
  • Empties trash
  • Performs other duties as required

 

Maintenance Worker II

In addition to the duties for Maintenance Worker I

  • Supervises a small crew
  • Supervises and performs slide control planting, creek bed clean out, park landscape planting and maintenance, including irrigation; athletic field maintenance;
  • Performs other duties as required

Knowledge of:

Maintenance Worker I

  • Common tools, materials and practices used in construction, gardening and maintenance work.

Maintenance Worker II

In addition to the knowledges for Maintenance Worker I

  • Principles of supervisory practices and procedures

 

Skill/Ability to:

 

Maintenance Worker I

  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled construction, gardening and repair tasks
  • Operate trucks, motorized equipment and hand tools;
  • Operate heavy motorized equipment and power tools;
  • Follow written and oral instructions

 

Maintenance Worker II

In addition to the skills and abilities for Maintenance Worker I

  • Lay out and supervise the work of a small crew.
  • Read landscape, sprinkler and play equipment plans;
  • Maintain time and material records;
  • Prepare and complete work reports;

 

Education and Training

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

 

Maintenance Worker I

Experience: One year of semi-skilled construction, groundskeeping or
maintenance experience.

Training: graduation from high school

 

Maintenance Worker II

Experience: Three years of progressively responsible public works
construction, gardening and maintenance work

Training: Graduation from high school

 

Certificates

 

Maintenance Worker I

Possession of a California Water Environment Association Collections System Maintenance (CSM) Grade I certificate.

 

Maintenance Worker II

Possession of a California Water Environment Association Collections System Maintenance (CSM) Grade II certificate.

 

Licenses

Possession of a valid California driver’s license.  May be required to qualify for and obtain a Class A or Class B driver’s license and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Transportation regulations. 

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Physical Skills: Requires strength, agility, and endurance. Requires heavy lifting (75 pounds); considerable bending and stooping. Must be able to sit, stand, walk (on uneven surfaces), kneel, crouch, bend, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, and climb; Requires sufficient dexterity to drive trucks and large vehicles. Must have vision sufficient to read printed materials, a computer screen, and to test equipment in varied field settings.  Must have hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.

Working Environment: Works in shop and field settings; considerable exposure to inclement weather, cold, heat, noise, outdoors, dust, dirt, vibration, chemicals, traffic, traffic hazards, confined workspace, mechanical hazards, electrical and explosive hazards.

May work protracted and irregular hours; take 24-hour call and stand-by; available for evening meetings; available for unusual hours in emergencies

Benefits

The City's comprehensive benefits package includes:

Holidays: Thirteen (13) days per year.

Vacation: From 11 to 27 days per year, depending on length of service.

Sick leave: Accrual is one day per month, with no limit on accrual.

Retirement: The City contracts with CalPERS to provide a retirement plan that utilizes the formula of 2.5% @ 55 for "Classic members" or 2% @ 62 for "PEPRA members." Classic Members contribute 8% employee contribution plus 2.5% employer cost share for a total contribution of 10.5%.  PEPRA members pay 6.75% employee contribution plus 2.5% employer cost share for a total contribution of 9.25%.    

Insurance:  The City provides its employees with a medical  insurance allowance that allows employees to purchase medical insurance through either Teamsters Union #856 Health and Welfare or CalPERS medical benefits plan. Some plans require employee contributions.   Employees with proof of qualifying health insurance coverage through another group health plan may qualify for a "Health In-Lieu Payment" when declining city coverage.

The City contributes toward a dental insurance plan and vision plan for employee and all eligible dependents.

The City pays premiums for:

  • Life insurance premium in the amount of $30,000.
  • Long term disability insurance (to begin sixty days after onset of non-work-related illness or injury).

Deferred Compensation Plan: Employees may participate in a pre-tax retirement savings plan.

Union Membership: This position is represented by Teamster Local #856 -Miscellaneous, and union membership is optional. Please refer to MOU for further benefit information.

Applicants will be assessed on the application submitted. Applicants will be screened to the most qualified. Applicants deemed most qualified will be invited to an oral interview panel exam. Applicants passing the exam interview will be placed on an eligible list established for this recruitment which will be used to fill our current openings as well as any future openings for the life of the eligible list.

 

Oral Panel Examination is scheduled tentatively for the week of May 5th.
