The Police Officer Trainee position is the entry-level role for those who have not yet attended the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified academy.

The academy lasts six months and is the first step in your law enforcement career. Upon successful completion, officers perform a variety of law enforcement duties to protect life and property in accordance with applicable laws.

Starting salary for trainees is $30.68 per hour while attending the academy, plus excellent benefits.

After successfully completing the Police Academy, trainees are promoted to Police Officer with a salary increase to $35.06 per hour. Officers also receive additional pay incentives such as educational pay and POST Intermediate or Advanced Certification pay. There are many opportunities for advancement.

Our Minimum Qualifications for consideration are:

  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited U.S. high school or a passing score on the General Education Development (GED) test.   
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be 21 years of age as of the date of hire; a United States citizen or meet citizenship requirements; and be of good moral character with no felony convictions.

  • Or if you have taken a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) entry-level examination (PELLET B) and achieved a passing T-Score of 45.0 or better within the last twelve months, submit your results to jobs@simivalley.org to by pass the NTN exam.

Testing process:

  • Upon passing a written examination, candidates will be contacted through email to complete a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ). 
  • Candidates who complete PHQ's in an appropriate and timely manner will be invited for an oral interview with Background Detectives and placed on an eligibility list based on interview ranking.
  • Top Candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation including a medical, psychological, polygraph, and drug/alcohol screening.
  • A Physical Agility testing will include:
    • One Mile Run (time limit 10 minutes).
    • Solid Fence (time limit 13.5 seconds).
    • Chain Link Fence (time limit 10 seconds).
    • Body Drag (165 pounds) (time limit 14 seconds).
    • 99 Yard Obstacle Course (time limit 25 seconds).
  • Chief's Final Oral Interview.

Retirement/Pension:

  • A variety of PPO and HMO plans are available through the CalPERS Health Program.
  • The City contributes $158.00 per month and up to $2,387.04 per month in “Simiflex Dollars,” towards the cost of medical. 
  • “Simiflex Dollars” can be used to offset the cost of medical, dental, and/or vision insurance, or other optional benefits. 

Paid Leave:

  • Work/Life balance with 5.2 weeks of AL (Annual Leave) per year to start (AL combines vacation and sick time). 
  • Accruals increase at 5 years and 10 years of service.
  • Cash out option available after one year of service.
  • 11 paid holidays per year and one floating holiday per year.

Prescription Drug Plan: 

  • Major retail options and mail order program.

Paid Dental Insurance:

  • HMO and PPO options available from Delta Dental and fully covered by the City for family coverage.

Vision Insurance:

  • Vision insurance from VSP costs the employee $1.46 per month for family coverage.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA): 

  • An FSA account allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars for out-of-pocket health and dependent care expenses.
  • Eliminate paying federal or state taxes with an FSA account. 

Employee Assistance Program (EAP): 

  • Confidential counseling and referral service to help employees and their household members resolve personal problems. 
  • Up to 8 free consultations for employees and all members of their household.

Optional Insurance from AFLAC: 

  • Available plans include accident, cancer, hospital and critical care.

  • $101,000 employee coverage provided at the City's expense.
  • $5,000 dependent coverage provided at the City's expense.

Tuition Reimbursement:
