THE POSITION:

The City of Hayward is excited to announce its recruitment for the position of Jail Supervisor. Under the direction of the Jail Administrator, incumbents perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties including providing technical and functional supervision over jail personnel. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility. 

To plan, assign and review the work of assigned jail personnel; to perform duties related to the booking, searching and monitoring of prisoners; and to assist with other non sworn police activities as necessary. This is an advanced journey level class. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties including providing technical and functional supervision over jail personnel. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.

You are:

The ideal candidate will be committed to providing excellent service and possess the ability to multi-task several duties while supervising staff and ensuring health and safety standards in a secure Type I jail facility. The candidate should have experience training and evaluating others, completing administrative reports, and understanding the principles of report writing. Successful completion of the “Correction Officer Supervisor Course” issued by the State of California Standards and Training for Correction Program or Peace Officer Standards and Training Supervisory Course is highly desired.
 

Essential Duties:

What you will do: 
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Plan, assign and review the work of assigned jail personnel.
• Evaluates performance of assigned jail personnel; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement disciplinary procedures; and counsels employees.
• Approves days off and vacation requests from jail personnel and coordinates replacements for vacancies; schedules emergency and short-term assignments for the jail.
• Assists in the development and implementation of new policies, procedures, programs and goals/objectives for the jail facility.
• Assists in identifying training needs and the design of training programs; supervises and/or provides training to employees assigned to the jail adhering to the laws pertaining to a Type I jail facility.
• Train and develop assigned personnel; maintain awareness of new procedures related to prisoner incarceration.
• Book prisoners into the jail; prepare paperwork on prisoners; fingerprint and photograph prisoners.
• Maintain light security of the jail; separate prisoners as necessary.
• Verify warrants and criminal history of prisoners on law enforcement computer systems.
• Transport prisoners to court or other jail facilities.
• Respond to the public inquiries on the phone and in person and provide information as appropriate.
• Deliver prescribed medication to prisoners.
• Inventory and order jail supplies and food.
• May be assigned to act in the absence of the Jail Administrator.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

You have: 
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing duties as a jailer in a department similar to the Hayward Police Department.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license at time of appointment.

Must possess a Basic Corrections Officer Academy Certificate from a certified Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) academy.

Must possess or obtain, during the probationary, certificates for the "Correction Officer Supervisor Course" issued by the State of California Standards and Training for Correction Program or the Peace Officer Standards and Training Supervisory Course.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS 

Essential duties require the mental and/or physical ability to: work in a standard office and jail facility environment; drive to various locations to transport prisoners; perform repetitive hand movements and fine coordination to book prisoners and prepare documents and data using a computer keyboard and mouse/trackball, use standard office equipment; sit for prolonged periods of time; stand, walk, reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, squat and stoop in the performance of booking prisoners; converse by telephone and in person, and be clearly understood; interact with the public and all different levels of City staff in a professional manner; and safely lift, carry and maneuver property, boxes, or files weighing up to 35 pounds.

This position will perform a variety of responsible law enforcement and crime prevention work, including patrolling assigned areas, answering calls and complaints, investigating crimes, serving civil papers, and providing court room security; enforce all federal and state laws and local ordinances related to public safety and welfare.

THE POSITION: 

The City of San Rafael is recruiting for a Police Officer. This position performs a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression.  Police officers prepare cases and provide courtroom testimony, provide information and assistance to the public and perform special assignments in areas such as patrol, traffic, investigations and gang enforcement.  General supervision is provided by the Police Sergeant.  Responsibilities may include the direct supervision of officers in training and/or the indirect supervision of other officers and/or support staff.

Special Assignment Pay

Members of our team are eligible for specialized assignments with compensation incentives:

Detective/School Resource Officer - Additional 2.5% of base salary

Motorcycle - Additional 2.5% of base salary 

Field Training Officer - Additional 2% of base salary

Bilingual Pay - up to $150 per month

K-9 Handler - Additional seven hours of additional pay at 1.5 rate and seven of overtime each pay period

Information Technology Super User - Additional 5% of base salary

Under supervision, a Police Cadet is a non-sworn, part-time classification that assists police personnel in a variety of operations in order to gain practical knowledge of law enforcement. They will obtain practical work experience that supports their career goals.

Employees in this classification may receive training and experience in each of the below duties.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Incumbents in this position are interested in law enforcement (and the Union City Police Department will provide the opportunity to learn various aspects of police work where they can integrate academic philosophies with practical experience. This position will provide incumbents on-the-job training and the ability to develop professional networking relationships for future service in government or law enforcement.

Positions assigned to Records may be responsible for:

• Copying, indexing, assembling, filing, distributing, and retrieving various documents files, records, and reports.
• Providing information to individuals at the front counter or over the phone.
• Conducting transactions from cash drawer for purchasing reports.
• Inputting, tracking, retrieving, accessing, and purging data in various logs, systems, and databases.
• Conducting research projects and drafting reports and memos.

Positions assigned to Animal Control may be responsible for:

• Transporting animals to the shelter or if injured to the veterinary hospital.
• Disposing of deceased animals.
• Quarantining animals that have bitten people and complete associated forms.
• Investigating cruelty to animal calls.
• Placing animals under protective custody.
• Drafting animal control citations.
• Appearing and testifying in court when subpoenaed.
• Inspecting animal control vehicles and equipment for damage and inventory prior to use on shift.

Positions assigned to Parking Enforcement and Vehicle Abatement may be responsible for:

• Patrolling an assigned area by vehicle or on foot to ensure public compliance with existing parking ordinances.
• Maintaining communication with dispatch.
• Writing warnings and citations for illegally parked vehicles.
• Observing and reporting hazardous conditions such as missing traffic signals, signs, and street markings that need to be repainted.
• Maintaining assigned equipment and supplies such as hand-held citation computers, citation books, rain gear, street cones, flares, etc.
• Performing traffic control duties such as setting up barricades and temporary signs, directing traffic, and placing inoperative bags on broken parking meters.

Positions assigned to Fleet Maintenance may be responsible for:

• Reviewing and reporting vehicle deficiencies.
• Scheduling repair of vehicles and equipment.
• Transporting vehicles and equipment to repair shop.
• Arranging for tows.
• Entering and maintaining vehicle inventory/status log.
• Coordinating service, oil changes, and cleaning of vehicles.
• Maintaining supplies such as stocking first aid kits, fingerprint kits and flares, ensuring fire extinguishers are full and appropriately charged, etc.
• Registering undercover vehicles with DMV.
