The Engineering & Program Delivery Division:

This division is responsible for the design and construction of all capital projects and infrastructure required to provide a safe, reliable and efficient transportation system for Santa Clara County. These responsibilities include program and project management, design development, engineering management, project controls, construction management and turnover of various projects that are part of VTA's rail, facilities and highway transportation improvement programs.

This division is also responsible for the implementation of the projects identified in the 2000 Measure A Program, which includes the planning, design, and construction of the Eastridge to BART Regional Connector, that connects light rail system to  regional transit systems.

What you will be doing:

Under general direction, the Transportation Engineering Manager manages staff engaged in a variety of activities, such as the planning and design of transportation systems and facilities, administering large capital budgets, including supervising consultant services; and performs managerial and administrative duties.
 

Distinguishing Characteristics

A position in this classification has direct responsibility for project management and development of VTA projects. This position supervises VTA and consultant staff including mentoring and advising staff, administers large project budgets, and is responsible for projects that range widely in level of complexity, involving management of VTA staff and multiple professional planning, engineering and/or architectural agreements.

Essential Job Functions:

Typical Tasks

• Plans, organizes, and directs the work of professional and technical employees involved with the planning, design, construction, and support of activation of transportation systems including guideways, roadways, systems elements, and other transit facilities;
• Mentors and advises subordinate engineers in the area of career development, rotating section assignments, monitoring training, and related professional growth opportunities;
• Supervises the preparation of resolutions, agreements, and other legal documents and the coordination of legal assistance;
• Confers with staff to establish procedures and design standards and assures that the quality of work performed and professional standards are maintained; and reports to management regarding problems or any necessary process improvements;
• Provides final review of plans, specifications, reports, and other documents prepared by subordinates or outside parties;
• Prepares, reviews, and approves detailed correspondence, reports, and agreements;Confers with VTA management and others in matters pertaining the Division's business plan and other issues;
• Confers with VTA management and others in matters pertaining to the Division's business plan and other issues;
• Administers contracts and approves VTA payments for projects capital costs to consultants;
• Assists in the preparation of divisional budgets;
• Represents VTA before the Board of Directors, California Public Utilities Commission, city councils and other State, Federal, local and regional agencies, boards, and commissions, and before local citizens in public meetings and hearings;
• Coordinates technical information exchanges with officials of other governmental jurisdictions, other transportation facility specialists, and the public;
• Represents VTA in planning, design, construction, and operations related legal and financial issues, contractual matters, and related issues;
• Manages and/or coordinates with various committees and working groups;
• Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Employment Standards

Development of the required skills, knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through training and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in engineering and six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in engineering with experience with transportation systems or projects, including at least one year of experience at the Senior Transportation Engineer or comparable level for a transportation agency, public works department, public agency or similar organization.
 

Registration as a professional engineer or professional architect in the State of California is required at the time of appointment.

Overview:

Do you want to be part of a dynamic team that helps ensure sustainable groundwater supplies? Valley Water is seeking qualified candidates to join the Groundwater Management Unit. This position uses and maintains groundwater models to simulate current and future groundwater conditions, supporting groundwater supply and planning programs and contributing to sustainable water management. Related analyses include mass balance, statistics, or other methods to prepare or review hydrogeologic reports and engineering analyses. Work directly supports water supply operations, managed aquifer recharge, drought response, Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) compliance reporting, and the Water Supply Master Plan. Ideal Experience:

Assistant Water Resources Specialist I or Assistant Engineer I

No experience is required. Preferred academic/research focus includes:

• Academic projects or research in groundwater modeling and hydrogeology, including issues like groundwater supply, groundwater/surface water interaction, and/or seawater intrusion. 
• Use of groundwater flow models, geographic information system (GIS), statistics, Microsoft Excel, and computer programming to support academic or research projects.

Assistant Water Resources Specialist II or Assistant Engineer II

Two (2) years of professional level experience with responsibility for compliance with environmental permitting, water supply planning or distribution, groundwater management, mitigation of natural resource impacts, or hydrogeology or engineering civil.

• Proficiency using and maintaining groundwater flow models. 
• Project based work experience in groundwater management and hydrogeology including issues like groundwater overdraft, managed aquifer recharge, groundwater/surface water interaction, and/or seawater intrusion. 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including experience with functions, graphs, and pivot tables in Excel. 
• Experience using GIS and performing statistical analysis (e.g., trend test), and use of computer programming language.

Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Assistant Water Resources Specialist I or Assistant Engineer I

• Effectively analyze, interpret, summarize, and present technical information and data.

Assistant Water Resources Specialist I/II

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in water resources management, natural resources management, planning, civil or other field of engineering, geology, physical sciences, earth sciences, natural sciences or a field related to assigned functional area(s). 

Assistant Engineer - Civil I/II

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a field related to assigned functional area(s).

OR  

Possession of a valid California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate with two (2) years of associated paraprofessional engineering experience.

Required License or Certificate

Registration with the State of California as a Professional Geologist (PG) or Professional Engineer (PE) is a plus. (if registered, a 2.5% differential will apply).

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City’s Engineering and Transportation Department invites you to apply for the position of Part-Time Contract Senior Transportation Planner.  The current opening is a contract position for a two-year term with a focus on managing multi-use trail projects including planning, feasibility studies, environmental coordination, and engineering design. Class Characteristics
Deputy Director of Public Works – City Engineer is a Deputy Director level engineering classification responsible for overseeing the City’s engineering functions and performing a wide variety of engineering duties requiring independent judgement and initiative in prioritizing, scheduling, assigning and coordinating work. This class requires registration as a professional engineer. This class is distinguished from all other engineering classes by its supervisory and administrative responsibilities over a wide range of duties as well as the requirement to perform the more complex engineering and project management assignments. Assignments and projects may be long-term or may constitute a major portion of a continuous or comprehensive engineering or construction program. Typically assigned functional areas include private development review and plan checking, oversight of regulatory compliance (e.g., Municipal Regional Permit [NPDES], Cal-OSHA, SWRCB/RWQCB non-utility related orders), waste franchise, Sierra Point Lighting & Landscape District, and Capital Improvement Program.

 

Supervision Received and Exercised:

Receives general direction from the Public Works Department Head.

The Town of Truckee is seeking an experienced, highly-motivated, collaborative team member to play a vital role in the Town’s Engineering Division. The primary focus of this position advertisement is to find a key team member to join the Division in either the Assistant or Associate Engineer role, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.
The Engineering Division works on the implementation of a variety of Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) including new trails, roundabouts, streetscape improvements, roadway infrastructure, and miscellaneous Council priorities, such as new parks or new Town facility improvements. The distinction between the Assistant/Associate levels is the ability to perform up to the full range of duties assigned, including differing levels of independent use of judgement, under the general supervision of the Senior Engineer or Engineering Manager. The Associate Engineer level requires current registration as a licensed professional engineer in the State of California. The Assistant Engineer does not require registration as a licensed professional engineer, although education in an engineering or related field is desired.

• Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a related field.
• Two (2) years of Civil engineering experience.
• Possession of an Engineer-in-Training Certificate (Assistant Engineer ONLY)
• Possession of a valid Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California (Assistant Civil Engineer ONLY)
• Possession of a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record throughout employment.

Associate Civil Engineer

• Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a related field. 
• Three (3) years of civil engineering experience, including one year of lead responsibility. 
• Registered as a licensed Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California.
• Possession of a valid driver license and a satisfactory driving record throughout employment.

There is currently one (1) full-time, regular hire Civil Engineer (Engineering) vacancy.

The Senior Civil Engineer (CE) plans, manages, and coordinates the engineering program. Using broad parameters of departmental policy guidelines, this position exercises substantial initiative, judgment, and expertise to meet program and project outcomes. The Senior Civil Engineer creates the scope on large civil engineering projects with complex budgets and timelines, integrating numerous elements that significant stakeholder involvement and sensitivity. This position provides direction and mentorship to more junior staff and oversees both technical and administrative work performed by their staff and ensures that projects are completed efficiently and effectively for the public good. Informing the public and Board of Supervisors, selecting consultants, preparing contract documents, reviewing project plans and specifications prepared by consultants, and administering contracts during construction are performed by the Senior Civil Engineer.

Signing bonus:

In addition to a competitive compensations package, new, full-time, regular hire Senior Civil Engineer are eligible to receive a $10,000.00 signing bonus which will be split into two equal payments: 50% at time of hire (i.e. first paycheck) and the remaining 50% after successful completion of their probationary period.

Hybrid schedule:

The Department of Public Works has embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely. Additionally, the Senior Civil Engineer will manage assigned staff and consultants and assist with budgeting tasks. Furthermore, the Senior Civil Engineer will provide and participate in critical team leadership to ensure that all utility engineering services, goals, projects, and initiatives meet the high-performance standards of the Department and City.

What You'll Do

This position offers a mix of fieldwork, technical review, and public interaction. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys being outdoors, thrives in active construction environments, and takes pride in ensuring high quality public infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect public works and capital projects – including streets, storm drains, sidewalks, grading, and related infrastructure – for compliance with plans, specifications, codes, and safety standards
• Review construction plans, specifications, and permit applications
• Administer encroachment and transportation permits from issuance through closeout
• Prepare daily inspection reports and maintain project documentation, including support for payments and change orders
• Guide contractors on proper construction methods, materials, and standards
• Oversee field testing for soils, asphalt, and concrete
• Perform survey work and assist with traffic engineering studies
• Investigate resident concerns and coordinate solutions with contractors and City staff
• Serve as a liaison among the City, contractors, utilities, businesses, and property owners
• Support interns and assist with training related to permit processing
• Perform light maintenance tasks such as traffic signal timing adjustments
