The County of San Mateo's Sustainability Department seeks well-qualified applicants for the position of Senior Sustainability Specialist – Climate Action on the Climate Protection team.

The Climate Protection team works to:

• Catalyze regional climate solutions by forming impact networks and partnering with cities for resource and economic efficiency.
• Convert buildings and transportation from gas to electric to target largest emissions sources and improve community health 
• Achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 in unincorporated communities 

The Senior Sustainability Specialist – Climate Action will:

• Lead the RICAPS Climate Collaborative to support San Mateo County cities in developing climate action plans and implementing coordinated initiatives to reduce emissions. This includes hosting and facilitating monthly Collaborative and working group meetings, providing direction to technical assistance partners, and guiding strategic planning for the Collaborative to strengthen collective action on climate solutions. 
• Foster peer learning, idea sharing, and problem solving among Collaborative participants, and lead pilots and collaborative implementation strategies, including joint grant applications.
• Serve on the leadership committee of the Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) quarterly regional forum. 
• Provide guidance and coordination with staff leading the San Mateo County Energy Watch, BayREN, and Peninsula Clean Energy programs to encourage municipalities to promote them to their community members. 
• Mentor junior team members to optimize implementation and coordination between programs to meet emissions targets, better serve community needs, and make strategic improvements to program delivery, meetings, reports, budgets, and presentations.

This is a full-time, classified, and fully benefited position in the Sustainability Department. 

The ideal candidate will:

• Be an experienced project manager able to juggle multiple complex projects simultaneously, prioritizing efforts in alignment with established goals. 
• Build relationships and strategic partnerships with County-level staff, departments, agencies, and non-government organizations to help achieve local and regional climate action goals. Have a solid familiarity with a breadth of sustainability related topics, especially energy efficiency, decarbonization, and sustainable transportation, preferably in the local government context. 
• Possess professional facilitation skills to enable cross-jurisdictional, cross-topical, cross-departmental information sharing, knowledge development, and project implementation. 
• Possess a high degree of familiarity with climate mitigation science, policy, and technology, as well as familiarity with approaches to collaborative, regionwide project development and implementation. 
• Have experience mentoring and/or coaching other team members.
• Possess effective written communication skills and experience in preparing written materials such as narratives, project summaries or reports, technical charts, presentations, and public outreach materials. 
• Possess effective oral communication skills and experience delivering targeted presentations to a wide variety of audiences and stakeholders, including public outreach and education.
• Possess strong analytical skills and experience conducting research, audits, or analyzing data.
• Incorporate the perspectives of multiple stakeholders and community segments in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a project or initiative.

About the County  

San Juan Water District Seeks a Customer Service Technician

The Customer Service Technician is responsible to provide customer service and support to the public, responding to inquiries and complaints, receiving and processing payments and fees, and assisting with new connection and permit applications.  The District can hire at the I or II level, depending on experience. 

Duties Include:

• Providing customer service in person, by phone, and electronically; responding to inquiries and complaints regarding utility services, rate structures, billing, payments, hydrant permits, and service orders.
• Receiving, processing, and documenting customer utility payments, fees, and reimbursements; processing payments received by mail, phone, in person, and electronically.
• Assisting in resolving water-related service complaints.
• Maintaining customer accounts by monitoring and ensuring the accuracy of account information.
• Providing estimates to title companies when properties are being sold.
• Preparing, tracking, and assigning work orders related to leaks, service line breaks, water quality concerns, pressure issues, meter replacements, and time-and-material tracked services.
• Notifying customers regarding delinquent accounts, non-payments, and returned checks; applying late fees and penalties; following up on payment arrangements.
• Researching and investigating billing and payment inquiries; applying adjustments as appropriate.
• Preparing Will Serve letters, assigning meters, and assisting applicants with the application process.

To be considered, candidates should be knowledgeable of principles and practices of customer service, methods for cash handling and reconciliation, and billing and account management procedures. 

The qualifications include:

I level:

• Graduation from high school or equivalent 

II level:

• Two semesters of college level coursework or two years of experience related to business or accounting 

AND

• One year of responsible experience equivalent to a Customer Service Technician I. 

Both levels:

• Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's class C license.

The salary range for the I level is $30.42 - $36.50 and for the II level $33.60 - $40.32, depending on qualifications. A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities is:

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in biology, physical or environmental science, environmental health, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field, or registration as an Environmental Health Specialist.

Hazardous Materials Specialist I

• In addition to the education requirement, some experience in hazardous materials management, environmental health inspections, industrial hygiene practices, or a similar hazardous materials program is desirable.

Hazardous Materials Specialist II

• In addition to the education requirement, two (2) years of experience in hazardous materials management, environmental health inspections, industrial hygiene practices, or a similar hazardous materials program.
• Possession of a Master’s degree in a qualifying field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

Hiring for two (2) immediate positions in the Departments of: 

Community Development Department

The Community Development Department is comprised of three divisions: Planning, Building, and Housing and Community Services. In general, the Department guides the ongoing physical development of the community, to ensure that construction conforms to the standards of the City and State. Within the Department, the Planning Division in the Community Development Department is responsible for reviewing proposed development projects in the City as well as Code Enforcement activities to enhance the community’s safety, welfare, quality of life, and economic opportunities. Specific activities within the Division include implementation of the City’s Short-Term Rental program, administration of the 6th Cycle Housing Element, El Camino Real Specific Plan revisions, and Santa Clara Station Area Specific Plan. The Office Specialist III will be essential to the administration and fiscal functions of the Division. THE POSITION:

Under general supervision, receives and transmits routine and emergency telephone and radio traffic; dispatches and coordinates police, fire, public works, and other municipal staff and equipment via multifrequency two-way radio; maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records, and radio logs; and does related work as required.
