THE POSITION

The Child Care Site Coordinator supervises one of the city of Pacifica’s many child care sites. These sites range from smaller full-day State preschool programs to large before and after school programs for school-aged children. The duties include supervising both full-time and part-time employees, and coordinating all aspects of a quality child development program. The program follows Title V staffing requirements and staff-to-child ratios.

BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Plan, organize and coordinate the care of preschool and elementary school-age children by providing various activities and events at a child care site.
• Prepare daily and monthly program plans and assign activities and events to subordinate staff members.
• Identify special needs of participants; initiate referrals as necessary.
•  Develop discipline techniques and youth program management.
• Coordinate nutrition program (breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack) at the site.
• Plan and conduct quarterly meetings with parents/guardians. Supervise, train and evaluate assigned personnel.
• Promote and maintain a professional representation of City of Pacifica Child Care Services and follow agreed upon policies and procedures.

Village Park Preschool Program

Village Park Preschool is a play-based preschool program offered by the City of Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department. We offer 4 programs: Lil’ Sprouts (2 year olds), Cottage Kids (3 year olds), Playschool Villagers (4 year olds), and Kinder Club (4 year olds).  The emphasis of the program is physical, social, and emotional growth in a child-centered environment. Activities are designed to foster a healthy child that develops an early love of learning. Village Park Preschool programs strive to create an environment inspiring each child’s individual creativity and self-expression. Children participate in arts/crafts, music, body movement, basic science, cognitive games, creative/dramatic play, cooking, circle and story time, fine and gross motor skill building, and phonics awareness.

Definition: Preschool Aide

The City of Burlingame is looking for an energetic, caring, creative, and responsible Preschool Aide. Under direction of a Recreation Coordinator, the Preschool Aide helps organize and implement preschool classes for the City’s Village Park Preschool program, assures policies and procedures are maintained, and performs related work as required.

Essential Duties

• Assist in implementing activities that support early childhood education and socialization;
• Assist with a variety of activities including, but not limited to, arts and crafts, organized games, story time, music/singing activities, science, cooking, early writing skills, and interactive circle time;
• Ensure proper safety precautions are observed;
• Maintain and care for supplies, equipment, and the facility;
• Set up daily snack; change diapers and support toilet training;
• Complete assigned paperwork, including time cards and incident and accident reports;

THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael Library & Recreation Department, Child Care Division, is accepting applications for Child Care Instructor II to work in our School-Age Programs at Mary Silveira and Vallecito Children’s Centers.  Under the supervision of the Child Care Director, the Child Care Instructor II will provide developmental care and supervision to children enrolled in the childcare program; implement age-appropriate curriculum for children; establish and maintain supportive relationships with children and parents.  Incumbents in this position assume primary responsibility for planning, scheduling, and organizing curriculum and other activities for childcare participants.  In the absence of the Child Care Director, the Child Care Instructor II may assume those duties.

This position performs the following essential job duties (including but not limited to):      

• Plan, implement and supervise enrichment and recreation-based programs.
• Develop age-appropriate curriculum and activities to stimulate children’s cognitive skills, abilities, and development.
• Evaluate needs of children, staff, and site to maintain a safe and healthy environment for children and staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Education and Experience:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess: mobility to perform medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The classification supports indoor and outdoor programs requiring frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, or tools and equipment used in assigned program area. Program activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions. May be exposed to communicable illnesses, blood, and body fluids. Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.

Preschool Teacher

THE POSITION

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of duties related to planning, implementing and teaching age appropriate activities and/or programs for preschool age children at assigned City facilities.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Stimulate interest while teaching and supervising program activities such as social activities, organized games, special events, arts and crafts, drama and sports

• Maintain positive student and parent relationships and follow disciplinary procedures.
• Maintain a safe, clean, orderly and pleasant classroom environment.
• Notify appropriate staff of any problems with regard to site maintenance, children and parents, and makes recommendations as necessary.
• Promote and enforce safety procedures; render first aid and CPR, if certified, as required.
• Plan weekly lesson plans, monthly calendars and newsletters.
• Assist with and maintain annual budget; purchase of supplies and equipment.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Basic knowledge of understanding of the preschool aged child with regard to interests, skills, special needs, recreational activities and program planning of such activities.
• Practices and methods of public relations and customer service; techniques and principles of effective interpersonal communication.
• Modern office equipment, methods, procedures, and computer hardware and software.
• Principles and techniques of first aid and CPR.
• Principles and practices of safety management.
• Report writing techniques.

Ability to:

• On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules; interpret, understand and follow policies and procedures, and explain operations and problem solve issues for the public and with staff.
• Intermittently set up booths, hang banners, move tables, chairs and carry supplies; lift or carry weight of 45 pounds or less.
• Lead a variety of activities and apply knowledge to an actual preschool program and the children therein.
• Understand and translate City policies and practices into everyday working practices; make sound decisions with solid problem solving methods.
• Supervise, train and evaluate assigned temporary staff.
• Respond to emergency situations in a calm and effective manner; administer first aid and CPR if certified.
• Learn to operate a computer as necessary to perform job duties.
• Learn to identify problems regarding the facility and programs; refer difficult problems/irregularities for more advanced attention and recommend possible solutions.
• Understand and carry out written and oral directions.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
• Communicate tactfully with customers.
• Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
• Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Training

Experience:

• Two (2) years of work experience in a preschool setting.

Training:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree and completion of twelve (12) college units in early childhood education.

License or Certificate

• Possession of CPR and First Aid certificates within 6 months of hire.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applications will be screened by the Human Resources Department for minimum qualifications.  Qualifying applicants may be contacted by the Department to interview. Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check and depending on position applied for a pre-employment medical exam and a drug and alcohol screening test.
