POSITION
To perform a variety of skilled work involving the trimming, pruning, removal, installation and general maintenance of trees; to operate equipment; and to serve as a lead member on a tree maintenance work crew. To provide direction to tree trimming crews, and to perform administrative duties as necessary. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Community Services Department, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Ideal Candidate will possess an in-depth knowledge of practices and procedures identified by
the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) as they relate to a municipal setting. The Ideal
Candidate will possess good communication, customer service and writing skills, as well as
be competent with computers and related software, e.g. maintenance management and MS
Outlook. Additionally, the Ideal Candidate will have a strong work ethic, ability to climb trees, work
out of an aerial truck, be available to work overtime and perform standby duty as needed. This position will be responsible for leading and directing the daily workload of both full-time and part-time staff, so prior experience as a lead worker is preferred. The ability to speak and understand Spanish is also a desirable quality.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Use ropes, high ranger, hand saws, and power saws to trim trees. Rig ropes in trees and determine placement of ropes for easiest and safest removal of limbs. Check location of power lines, personnel, equipment, pedestrians, and traffic before cutting limbs. Check ropes for wear and breakage; clean and maintain trimming equipment. Work both independently and as a crew member in removing trees and stumps. Plant, spray, and inject trees with pesticides/herbicides as necessary. Operate a chipper, aerial truck and mist sprayer. Utilize proper safety precautions and set proper example for others. Inspect tree trimming, installation, removal and other work to be done; determine scope of work required, estimate time and material requirements. Assist in the scheduling and prioritizing of tree maintenance work and maintain routine records. Assist in the training, supervision and evaluation of less experienced personnel. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide general information to the public, other city departments, and vendors pertaining to area of assignment. Respond to emergency situations after regular working hours. May perform grounds maintenance or other public works maintenance work when not assigned to tree trimming duties. Work cooperatively with others. Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience performing journey level tree maintenance work.
License and Certificate: Required upon hire, possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with Tank and Air Brake endorsement. Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate from the State of California, Department of Pesticide Regulations, Work Zone Safety I certificate from the International Municipal Signal Association, valid First Aid and CPR certifications are required prior to permanent appointment. Certification as an Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture is desired.
