The San Bruno Police Department

Examples of Duties

Police Officers will work on assigned, rotating shifts, patrolling City streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace; providing traffic control, investigation and first-aid at accidents; performing detection, investigation and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct; responding to emergency calls and investigating robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, and other criminal activity; taking appropriate law enforcement action; serving and protecting the public, and performing additional duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

In addition to graduation from high school, the following are required:

• At least 21 years of age
• No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history
• U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship
• Valid California Driver’s License
• Ability to meet all California POST medical, psychological, and background standards
• Successful completion of a rigorous background investigation
• A 2-year or 4-year degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field is preferred

Entry-Level / Academy Graduate Applicants

• Must meet all of the basic requirements listed above; and
• Have successfully completed a California P.O.S.T. Basic Training Police Academy within the past thirty (30) months (to maintain POST eligibility without requalification); OR
• Provide proof of current enrollment in a California P.O.S.T. Basic Training Police Academy and successfully complete the academy prior to appointment.
• Academy graduates whose academy completion exceeds thirty (30) months may be considered if they have completed or agree to complete the POST Requalification Course prior to appointment.

Lateral Applicants

• Must meet all of the basic requirements listed above; and
• Currently employed as a full-time, paid sworn police officer for at least two (2) years; OR
• Have at least twenty-four (24) months of prior service as a full-time, paid sworn police officer in a civilian governmental jurisdiction; and
• Possess a valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate (or higher), or an equivalent certificate approved by P.O.S.T.

THE POSITION:

 

The City of Hayward is excited to announce its recruitment for the position of Lateral Communications Operator. 

DEFINITION

Under general supervision from the Communications Supervisor, the Communications Operator operates a computer aided dispatch system receiving calls and dispatching police, fire or other City services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a journey technical level position in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full range of duties assigned. This class is distinguished from the Communications Supervisor in that the latter provides technical and functional supervision over assigned communication personnel.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Communications Center in the Support Services Division of the Hayward Police Department is responsible for dispatching both Police and Fire Services throughout the City of Hayward. The Hayward Police Department is one of 18 CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement) accredited police departments in California and is committed to maintaining CALEA's high standards and broadly recognized excellence.
The Communications Center is frequently the first point of contact that a member of the public will have when requesting assistance from the City of Hayward. The information gathered by the communications operator during this contact is critical to a positive outcome. The Communications Center consists of six (6) stations with each communications operator assigned to a specific job.
 

 

Essential Duties

Minimum Qualifications

LATERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a public safety dispatcher for a Public Safety Answering Point, including heavy public contact while performing multiple tasks and using a computer-aided dispatch system.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Licenses and Certificates: Completion of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Public Safety Dispatcher course is highly desirable.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Typing Certificate: A typing certificate with 35 net words per minute 

1. Certificates will be accepted from a public school, business school or temporary agency; certificates from Internet testing services and/or home computer CD testing will NOT be accepted.
2. Typing certificate (or signed statement on official letterhead from the testing agency) must be dated no earlier than six (6) months prior to the date of the application filing.
3. Typing certificate (or signed letter) must state all of the following information:

· Five (5)-minute timed typing test.
· Gross typing speed in words per minute.

Building Attendant I/II

The Belmont Parks and Recreation Department is recruiting for part-time Building Attendants. Building Attendants provide operational supervision of facilities during the absence of full-time staff.

Building Attendant I - This is the entry level class in the Building Attendant series.  Incumbents in this class work under close supervision.  As experience is gained, incumbents may be granted more independence of action under established guidelines.

Building Attendant II - This is the journey level class in the Building Attendant series. Incumbents are expected to work independently in the absence of close supervision.

The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department seeks motivated, self-driven individuals passionate about working with the public. Customer Service Representative involves substantial contact with customers, program contractors, instructors, and staff, working in the café or as a birthday party host.  Various tasks may be assigned, from the front desk to facility setup/clean up. 

This position requires you to work at our indoor water park and recreation center.

Compensation:

Police Officer Trainee:   $6,668.53 - $6,997.47 monthly

This recruitment is open to those individuals with no prior law enforcement experience and have not received POST certified police academy training.   If you are a POST certified academy graduate, please apply to the recruitment titled Police Officer (Academy Graduate or Participant).

THE POSITION:  This is a trainee level classification which provides transition into the position of Police Officer.  A Police Officer Trainee is hired into this civilian position for the period prior to and during the time they are assigned to a Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified police academy.  The police academy has an expected duration of approximately 6 months.  Upon successful completion of training at an academy and upon the availability of a Police Officer position, Police Officer Trainees are sworn in and appointed to the classification of Police Officer.  The Police Officer Trainee is represented by SEIU Local 1021 and benefits are limited to those of a civilian employee.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, a Recreator III independently performs assigned tasks which serve the public use of municipal recreation facilities and other duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Open and close facilities following established guidelines, set up equipment needed for facility programs, perform routine maintenance and cleanup for assigned facilities, collect fees for facility use, maintain order and discipline in assigned facilities and programs by enforcing City and Departmental policies, may facilitate in assigned program areas, may supervise other part-time staff, volunteers, or court workers as assigned, and maintain accurate records and reports. May include specific assignments such as senior swim instructor, senior lifeguard, facility attendant and assisting with after school or summer programs. Other duties as assigned.

What you will do:

Receive emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, or other related services; determine nature and location of emergency; determine priority and dispatch emergency units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures; coordinate emergency calls and relay information and assistance requests involving other law enforcement agencies.

Use a computer aided dispatch (CAD) system to enter calls for service/radio traffic and monitor real-time status of situations; use an automated records management system (RMS) related to public safety activities to enter and retrieve information.

Maintain contact with all units on assignment; maintain status and location of field units and monitor radio frequencies of outside public safety agencies.

Receive incoming telephone and voice radio calls for non-emergency assistance; dispatch animal control, utilities and street maintenance staff as needed.

Enter, retrieve, and update information from teletype networks, including the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, stolen vehicles and other information.

Maintain familiarity with major roads, streets, areas, and industrial and public facilities within City boundaries.

May complete recovered stolen vehicle reports in accordance with established procedures.

Relay emergency and non-emergency information to public safety personnel and other agencies in the field.

Monitor multiple frequencies.

Determine and report the need for equipment repairs.

Receive structured classroom and on-the-job training.

Assist in relaying information during response to natural disasters.

Perform the duties of a Public Safety Call Taker, as assigned. 

Perform related work as necessary.

EXAM INFORMATION

*Effective the first full pay periods following 1/1/2025, a 3% Cost of Living increase and up to 4% equity adjustment will be applied to the hourly wage for the Police Officer Lateral position (totaling 14% in two years). *The listed salary does not include an additional 17.5% in potential incentive pay upon completion of FTO or a projected 14% raise paid over the next two years*

THE POSITION:

Under immediate, then as proficiency increases, general supervision of a Field Training Officer, Police Sergeant or higher ranking official, incumbents in this classification perform and document varied law enforcement assignments through working assigned shifts in patrol or on specialty assignments and participating in training; perform related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Patrol:

• Respond to emergency calls; administer first aide.
• Investigate reported crimes, suspicious activity, and traffic accidents.
• Investigate unattended deaths.
• Conduct the collection and preservation of evidence at crime scenes.
• Patrol assigned sectors in a marked vehicle to provide preventive and enforcement action.
• Assist citizens in distress and provide information regarding police function/operations.
• Quell domestic disturbances and other disputes.
• Initiate suspicious person contacts and conduct field interrogations.
• Locate and apprehend persons for violations of statutes; arrange for booking, detention, and disposition of arrestees.
• Provide crowd, riot, and traffic control.
• Write reports which are accurate, clear, and concise.
• Testify in court.
• Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints both in an office environment and while on patrol.

• Traffic:

• Perform selective enforcement of traffic violations at identified problem areas; use LIDAR, or other designated equipment.
• Conduct post storage hearings on towed vehicles and review complaints related to towing company activities.
• Author collision reports.
• Conduct investigations for hit and run, injury, and fatal accidents including accident reconstruction.
• Plan, coordinate, and supervise special event traffic control.
• Advise and consult with City personnel on traffic issues.
• Present lectures and discussions to high school students.
• Conduct training for officers on changes in traffic law and reporting techniques.
• Conduct inspections of commercial vehicles for safety, weight, size, and load violations.

• School Resource:

• Investigate and apprehend persons who commit crimes on campus.
• Monitor gang activity as it related to criminal activity both on and off campus.
• Monitor bus stop and other campus areas where potential or ongoing problems exist.
• Act as the liaison between school staff and police department.
• Conduct formal presentations for students and staff; engage in informal discussions of law enforcement with students and staff.
• Coordinate and supervise security at school activities. Refer students to appropriate agencies for assistance.
• Coordinate and implement school fingerprinting program.
• Make home visits to truants; counsel students on minor law infractions.

• Investigations:

• Investigate aggravated, serial, or major crimes; follow up on cases initiated by Patrol.
• Develop leads through informants, police sources, citizens, and/or evidence.
• Interview witnesses; interrogate suspects.
• Collect, preserve, and arrange for proper identification of evidence.
• Prepare and serve search and arrest warrants; conduct search and seizure assignments.
• Review reports for trends; identify suspects and crime patterns.
• Work with the District Attorney in reviewing and preparing cases for court.
