THE POSITION
To perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance of City-owned buildings, equipment and facilities.

The purpose of this recruitment is to hire a Temporary / Part-Time position. Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Facility Maintenance Worker I position may be considered for employment as an Intern. Temporary / Part-Time employees work no more than 130 hours per month AND 960 hours per fiscal year. Typical work schedule will be three 8-hour shifts per week, excluding weekends and evenings.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
This position will perform semi-skilled tasks in a variety of light construction and maintenance activities. The Ideal Candidate will be customer-friendly and be a solutions-oriented professional who is flexible in dealing with shifting priorities, have good time management skills, and possess the ability to work effectively in the absence of supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Maintain and repair City buildings, equipment and facilities by performing a variety of semiskilled carpentry, plumbing,  painting, heating/air conditioning, mechanical repair and electrical work as necessary. Inspect City buildings to locate conditions indicating the need for repairs and maintenance; assist in establishing and implementing preventative maintenance programs. Operate and maintain a variety of heavy tools and equipment, including small power and hand tools. Work cooperatively with others. Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Remodel and repair a variety of building components such as counters, tables, desks, bookshelves, cabinets, partitions, walls, windows and doors; boilers, water pumps, exhaust fans, compressors, and other water and sewage system plumbing as required. Perform electrical work such as wiring and rewiring; replace switches, ballast and receptacles as required. Prepare simple activity and related reports; maintain inventory and work records as required. Requisition supplies and materials. Perform general janitorial duties as needed. Perform other facility maintenance duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Facility Maintenance Worker I
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Six (6) months of work experience in carpentry, electrical and maintenance work is desirable.
License and Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License required upon hire.

BENEFITS

Summary Description

Under immediate supervision (Water Distribution Operator I) or general supervision (Water Distribution Operator II), performs skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work on the potable water treatment and distribution system of the water utilities services division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to water distribution and treatment.

Water Distribution Operator I: This is the entry level class in the Water Distribution Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Water Distribution Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to City established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or indirectly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Water Distribution Operator II: This is the full journey level class within the Water Distribution Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Water Distribution Operator I by the assignment of the full range of duties assigned. Minimum Qualifications for consideration - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, environmental engineering, environmental sciences or a related field. 

Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible wastewater treatment plant and collection system operations and maintenance experience including two years of administrative and supervisory responsibility. One year of Biological Nutrient Removal Treatment Processing is desirable.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a State of California Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade V certificate is highly desirable.

The Position

The Planning Manager oversees the operations of CDD’s Planning Division, which includes supervision of a team of 10 planners and management of all current and long-range planning functions of the City. The Position: 

The Generation Technician performs the hands-on duties required to safely and efficiently operate and maintain the SVP Generation resources.  Under direction from the on-shift Sr. Generation Technician, the Generation Technician performs all manner of mechanical, electrical, and operational activities required for the City’s power generation facilities including:

 

• Controlling City power plants and monitoring remote hydroelectric facilities
• Responding to emergency situations and abnormal operations
• Repairing mechanical pumps, valves, compressors, boilers, HRSG auxiliaries, reduction gears, hydraulic systems, liquid and gas fuel systems, lube oil systems
• Repairing electrical systems, breakers, relays, meters, wiring, and motors
• Organizing and supervising contractors and employees in conducting scheduled and emergency shutdown work

 

Incumbents ensure that for all of the City of Santa Clara’s electric generation power plants that all of the systems and sub-systems are operated and maintained in an efficient, effective, and a safe manner. Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

One of the following education requirements:

• Education equivalent to graduation from high school and
• Four (4) years of electric generation operation and maintenance experience in a medium sized electric generation power plant or the equivalent is required, two (2) years of which must have been at above the entry-level
• Two (2) additional years of electric generation operation and maintenance experience with an electric generation power plant or the equivalent is highly desirable. 
• Three (3) years of operations and maintenance level experience above the entry level with work assignments in the City of Santa Clara combined cycle generation facilities may substitute for the above experience requirements.

License/Certifications:

Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.
 Possession of the following certificates are required within one year of appointment for the duration of the appointment:

• Department of Transportation (DOT) Qualified Operator for Natural Gas Pipeline;
• Department of Transportation (DOT) Qualified Operator for Natural Gas Compressor Station;
• Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug Testing Program for Natural Gas Pipeline and Compression Station Operator;
• Qualified to wear a respirator;
• Qualified electrical worker, who is qualified to do switching, required within two years of appointment and for the duration of the appointment; and

Physical Requirements:

• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, including commercial, of which at least two (2) years must be in a supervisory capacity.  

Senior Building Inspector

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent based on courses taken from an accredited educational institution.  
• Associate of Arts degree preferred AND five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, including commercial inspection and/or plan check experience, of which at least two (2) years must be at the full journey level or above.

Both Positions: Maintain a Valid CA driver’s license.

Deputy Building Official

Must maintain ICC certification in at least three of the following areas: commercial building inspector, combination building inspector, electrical inspector, plumbing inspector or mechanical inspector.  These certifications are required at time of hire. In addition, Plans Examiner certification from ICC is required, but may be obtained within 6 months of hire. 

Senior Building Inspector

 Building Inspector certification from International Code Council (ICC) or equivalent is required. CASP certification is highly desirable. Possession of a Commercial Building Inspector or Building Plans Examiner certification from ICC is desirable.  Certification as a Commercial Building Inspector must be obtained within one year of appointment as a condition of continued employment.

The Deputy Building Official is a regular position of the City’s San Rafael Mid-Management Employee Association (SRMMEA) and is eligible to receive benefits including but not limited to:

• MEDICAL | City group health coverage, with the City paying a fixed dollar amount toward the cost of the monthly insurance premium. Employee only: $950.00; Employee plus one: $1,900.00; Family: $2,400.00
• DENTAL AND VISION | Premium fully paid for employee plus eligible dependents.

  • Tier 2 - hired on or after 7/1/2011: 2% @ 55, Average of 3 highest years
  • Tier 3 PEPRA - hired on or after 1/1/2013: 2% @ 62, Average of 3 highest years
• DEFERRED COMPENSATION | City will contribute one percent (1.06%) of base pay into a City-provided deferred compensation plan
• GYM MEMBERSHIP REIMBURSEMENT | Up to $198 per year
• BILINGUAL PAY (if eligible) | Up to $250 per month

The Senior Building Inspector is a regular position of the City’s SEIU Local 1021 employee group and is eligible to receive benefits including but not limited to:

• MEDICAL | City group health coverage, with the City paying a fixed dollar amount toward the cost of the monthly insurance premium: Employee only: $950.00 | Employee plus one: $1,900.00 | Family: $2,400.00
• DENTAL | Premium fully paid for employee plus eligible dependents.
• VISION | Premium fully paid for employee.
