Facilities Maintenance Technician II (journey-level class in the classification series)

Responsible for performing the full range of maintenance duties at City buildings and facilities in order to ensure that all are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for City and public use. Incumbents are responsible for performing maintenance and alterations on buildings and facilities, electrical and mechanical systems, identifying and evaluating construction-related problems, and performing installation and repairs on plumbing systems. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from Senior Facilities Maintenance Technician in that the latter is responsible for technical and functional supervision of lower level maintenance staff and is capable of performing the most complex duties assigned to the series.

Senior Facilities Maintenance Technician (advanced journey-level class in the classification series)

Responsible for providing lead supervision and training to facilities maintenance staff. Incumbents regularly work on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment, including performing the most complex duties required to ensure City buildings, facilities, and grounds are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use. Responsibilities include training, developing and scheduling Facilities Maintenance Technicians, inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of City buildings, facilities and grounds. Positions in this classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned section. The work involves problem-solving of unique issues or increasingly complex problems without precedent and/or structure. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver work products.

Positions in the Facilities Maintenance Technician class series are flexibly staffed and positions are normally filled by advancement from the previous level; progression to the next level is subject to management approval and is dependent on the incumbent (i) performing the full range of duties assigned to their current level, and (ii) acquiring the knowledge, skill, and experience necessary to meet the minimum qualifications for the next level of the series.

What You'll Do

This is a journey-level electrician classification that works independently with minimal supervision completing a variety of skilled electrician tasks. This position performs a variety of complex and skilled work in electrical operations, maintenance, alteration and repair of electrical systems and equipment; installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs street lighting, traffic control devices and pump station electrical components; locates, tests and repairs malfunctions of sanitary and storm pumping stations, underground cables and other electrical systems and equipment. Join San Bruno Community Services, Parks Department as a Lead Maintenance Worker! 

The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality programs, services, and spaces to benefit the health and well-being of the community. Within Community Services, the Parks Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance of all City’s outdoor recreation sites, including 20 parks covering 68 acres, 6 baseball fields, 128 acres of open space, all City owned facilities, over 7 miles of medians, and one dog park. 
 

Under the supervision of the Parks Field Supervisor, the Parks Lead Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled tasks and complex assignments in maintenance, repair, and construction work. The Lead Maintenance Worker is a working supervisor position. The position exercises direct supervision over crews engaged in service, maintenance, and repair. Work assignments may also involve considerable skill in various construction and mechanical crafts and the operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment. 

CORE DUTIES

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Assigns and reviews work of Maintenance Workers I/II and seasonal staff; trains, supervises, and reviews work of assigned staff; provides input into performance evaluations and performance issues.

• Inspects and repairs equipment at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are safe and functioning properly; maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, materials supply, athletic field layouts and surfaces, base positioning and installation, and layouts of field markings.

• Determines and marks the locations of irrigation system wiring and water lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.

• Responds to complaints and resolves problems regarding functional areas such as tree conditions, ball field conditions irrigation system problems, park, building and ball field lighting, water leaks, parks facility issues.

• Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools assigned to their area of responsibility by checking equipment and tools and maintaining maintenance records, and refers defects to supervisory staff.

• Safely operates vehicles/equipment of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, soil and sand, concrete, performance of tree work; and other job functions; operates pneumatic tools and power tools.

• Oversees and participates in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including laying pipe, trenching and backfilling, determines safety and playability of sports fields and reports information to their supervisor, prunes trees and shrubs in conformance with established professional practices and safe working methods.

• Applies pesticides and utilizes best Integrated Pest Management practices for assigned areas of responsibility.

• Performs set up of traffic safety work zones utilizing traffic safety control devices as needed for work performed in areas such as medians, right-of ways, streets, and parks.

• Performs other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be a high school diploma or GED, and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing field maintenance work similar to that of a Maintenance Worker II with the City of San Bruno. 

HIGHLY DESIRABLE

• Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license. 

• Possession of a Qualified Pesticide Applicators Certificate. 

In addition, the ideal candidate possesses the following competencies:

• Having achieved a satisfactory level of technical or professional knowledge in parks
  maintenance; keeping up with current developments and trends in Community Services; leveraging expert knowledge to accomplish results.

• Taking prompt action to accomplish goals; achieve results beyond what is required; being proactive.

Come lead the Homework Center at the San Bruno Library!

The City of San Bruno Public Library is currently recruiting for a part-time, temporary Library Assistant—Homework Center Supervisor. Candidates must be able to commit from September 2025 to June 2026, for 17 hours per week and availability Monday 2-6PM, Tuesday 2-6PM, Wednesday 1-6PM and Thursday 2-6PM (with the exception of Library and San Bruno Park School District holidays). Although this is a ten-month position, the program is ongoing. Continued employment in subsequent school years may be considered based on performance and program needs.

Under the direction of the Library Services Manager, the Library Assistant—Homework Center Supervisor is responsible for the daily operations of the Library's after-school Homework Center, including classroom management, homework help, supervising and training volunteers, collaborating with library staff, and maintaining
accurate records of homework center attendance. The incumbent will be responsible for
maintaining a welcoming place for students to do their homework effectively within the larger context of the library, and for planning STEAM weekly activities and training/supervising students in the use of the 3-D printer. The homework center is a free, drop-in, after-school program for children in kindergarten through eighth grade.
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

• Some college coursework
   
• Clear and concise oral and written communication skills
   
• Ability to assist students with homework and computer skills
   
• Ability to relate to the public in a tactful and effective manner

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a self-starting, independent individual with sound judgement, capable of working in a busy team-oriented public-service environment; possesses excellent customer service skills; has experience working with students in a group setting, experience working with volunteers, and experience leading STEAM/Makerspace activities. * This is a part-time/temporary/seasonal position with the City of San Bruno.  As such, employees agree to serve in an at-will capacity and understand that service with the City may be terminated at any time.  This position works a maximum of 17 hours per week and does not provide any benefits, except for paid sick leave. In accordance with the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, all temporary, part-time, and seasonal employees, who on or after July 1, 2015, work in California for 30 or more days within a year from the commencement of employment are entitled to paid sick leave for prescribed purposes.  Employees will accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked and are entitled to use accrued sick days beginning on the 90th day of employment.  Employees may use up to 40 hours (or 5 days) of accrued sick leave in each year of employment.
