About the Department

The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. The City of San Jose, Animal Care and Services Division is seeking Veterinarians to work at the Animal Care Center, including one full-time in either/or, shelter medicine and/or the shelter’s public high quality, high volume spay/neuter clinic. The Animal Shelter Veterinarian may perform all aspects of shelter medicine in a large animal shelter. Duties may include routine spay/neuter surgeries on cats, dogs, and other animals as indicated. This position provides direct care and treatment of homeless animals entering the City of San Jose’s Animal Care Center.
 
In addition, this position is required to diagnose, treat, and/or recommend euthanasia. Registered Veterinary Technicians will be assigned to assist this position with the preparation and post-surgery processes of spay/neuter and other surgical procedures. This is a position reporting to the Shelter Manager of Animal Care and Services. This classification is represented by City Association of Management Personnel (CAMP).

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

•  Directs, coordinates and performs the screening, diagnosis, and basic and emergency medical treatment of animals in the shelter.
•  Performs or supervises the visual monitoring of impounded animals, including those that may be isolated or quarantined for signs of illness or unusual behavior.
•  Performs surgical procedures, including spay/neuters and vaccinates animals to prevent diseases.

The Manager, Track & Structures reports to the Deputy Director of Infrastructure Engineering and is responsible for overseeing railroad track and structures engineering support for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain)

• Oversee the track and structures engineering tasks for design/construction of Caltrain Capital and SOGR projects and provide technical support for planning on grade separation projects.

Physical Demands

• Drives and operates a variety of collection vehicles and equipment including one or two-person-staffed refuse collection truck, front, rear and side loaders in the collection and transportation of residential and commercial refuse; responds to afterhours call-outs if assigned.
• Maintains assigned truck by regular cleaning and washing, including inspecting for mechanical or other operating problems; reports mechanical or related problems for maintenance; may perform minor maintenance as appropriate.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, pesticides or herbicides which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. THE POSITION

Tri-City is looking for an individual to serve as a Clinical Therapist I/II for the Adult Outpatient Program (AOP). Class Characteristics

This entry-level classification in the Construction Inspector series reports to a Senior Civil Engineer through a Construction Coordinator in the Construction Inspection Section of the Public Works Engineering Division. Incumbents' assignments, objectives and work methods are specified; issues of fact are referred to the supervisor; review of work is ongoing and responsibility for achieving work objectives rests with a supervisor. Incumbents' work will gradually be done on a more independent basis subject to occasional review in progress through questions/problems and consultation with the supervisor and the section head. It is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Construction Inspector by the latter's technical expertise, performance of fully qualified journey level work with a minimum of supervision, and responsibility to provide training and technical expertise to Construction Inspector incumbents.

 

Essential Functions

• Reviews construction plans, specifications, encroachment permits, and other plans affecting assigned projects.
• Participates in meetings to discuss construction details and resolves issues with contractors and other agencies.
• Conducts on-site inspections of construction materials, grade elevations, underground facilities, construction safety precautions, minor concrete structures, street light installations, traffic signal installations, traffic control devices, and erosion and siltation control installations to determine compliance with contract plans and specifications, and with city and other governmental regulations.
• Makes field measurements.
• Ensures conformance with applicable safety standards and regulations.
• Assists in coordinating materials testing.
• Identifies problems.
• Monitors the correction of project deficiencies.
• Identifies and recommends approval of necessary contract and/or plan adjustments to accommodate field conditions.
• Maintains daily diary and field records of material and quantities used.
• Calculates and recommends formal approval of appropriate progress payments to contractors for work completed.
• Investigates citizen complaints related to encroachment and/or grading violations.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: Surveying and construction staking (grade-setting) practices; standard construction practices including specifications, methods, materials and equipment; mathematics through plane geometry and trigonometry; methods and techniques of materials testing; soil types and characteristics; standard specifications and construction details book (both City and State); construction safety standards; OSHA and CalTrans Traffic Control Devices Manual; traffic safety.

Skill in: Driving an automobile on paved and unpaved surfaces; operating surveying equipment; and preparing field sketches.

Ability to: Evaluate quality of construction and construction materials; determine safety implications of construction techniques; perform mathematical calculations through plane geometry and trigonometry; read blueprints; read public works construction and topography maps and grading plans; determine and verify elevations using hand level and calculator; communicate effectively with individuals from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds both orally and in writing; resolve inter-personal conflicts; identify problems, evaluate alternatives and arrive at logical decisions; read and interpret complex regulations and technical documents, including plans and specifications; understand and use standard engineering and hand held tools used in Public Works Construction Inspection; learn city encroachment and underground ordinances.

Education/Experience

Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory job performance would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be: Graduation from high school and four years experience in a field related to street/highway construction; 60 semester units of college education in engineering, construction techniques and methodologies or building inspection may be substituted for two years experience in construction.

Position Duties

 

The San José Fire Department (SJFD) is seeking to fill multiple Senior Public Safety Dispatcher positions in the Communications Division.  

 

Senior Public Safety Dispatchers (Senior PSDs) are responsible for supervising a team of Public Safety Radio Dispatchers (PSRDs) assigned to a shift in the Communications Center.  PSRD is the journey-level class for public safety dispatching within the City of San José wherein incumbents are required to handle the full range of telephone answering and dispatch functions.

 

Responsibilities of the Senior PSD include, but are not limited to the following:

 

• Supervising PSRDs, including approving time-off and other scheduling requests in accordance with the established guidelines.
• Assigning PSRDs to work the various dispatch positions within the Communications Center. 
• Conducting training sessions and drills to maintain the efficiency and coordination of their assigned team. 
• Evaluating the performance of team members and giving frequent feedback to subordinates.
• Preparing written training evaluations and performance appraisals.
• Investigating and responding to resident, department, and allied agency concerns or complaints.
• Coordinating with Chief Officers in the field regarding matters affecting department operations.
• Performing additional support tasks when assigned to an administrative role in the Operations Unit, Training Unit, Quality Improvement Unit, or Systems Support Unit. 
• Performing all duties of the PSRD classification.

Salary range(s) for this classification is/are:

• $115,356.80 - $140,358.40 (pensionable) 
• $125,450.52 - $152,639.76 (including non-pensionable and certification pay)
