Accounting Manager

Regular Full-Time Employment Opportunity

The City of Sunnyvale is currently recruiting for an Accounting Manager to join the Finance Department. The Accounting Manager leads a team of 10.5 Full Time Equivalent positions and plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the activities of the accounting division which includes functions such as all aspects of accounting services, accounts payable, accounts receivable and debt and investment management. This position is also responsible for regulatory federal and state reporting, acts as the staff liaison with external auditors, leads the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), and provides highly complex staff assistance to the Director of Finance.

Under general supervision, provides clerical and administrative support to a department head, division head, section supervisor and/or supervisory and professional staff within a variety of City departments.  Typical functions may include, but are not limited to reception, word processing, record keeping, and filing.  May also perform related work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Office Specialist I – This is the entry-level class in the Office Specialist series.  Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn office and City procedures.  As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines.  The Office Specialist I class includes part-time and temporary positions with incumbents available to provide relief support to a variety of City departments.  This class is alternately staffed by the Office Specialist II class.  Full-time incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher class.

Office Specialist II – This is the journey-level class in the Office Specialist series.  Requires the competency to independently perform a variety of office support duties.  All positions are characterized by the presence of fairly clear guidelines from which to make decisions and the availability of supervision in non-routine circumstances.  Specific duties, including the amount of typing, word processing, and use of on-line of personal computers will vary with the organizational unit to which you are assigned.  This class is distinguished from Office Specialist III, which is the working lead-level of the series, because that class performs more complex and/or specialized office clerical support functions.  Full-time incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Types correspondence, reports, forms and specialized documents related to the functions of the organizational unit to which assigned from drafts, notes, dictated tapes, or brief instructions, using a typewriter, word processor, or personal computer.
• Proofreads and checks typed and other materials for accuracy and completeness; compliance with departmental policies; and correct English usage, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
• Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports from an on-line or personal computer system, following established formats.
• Prepares and updates a variety of reports, which may require the use of arithmetic calculations and maintains records and processes forms, such as payroll records, purchase requisitions and orders, and others specific to the organizational unit.
• Establishes and maintains office files; researches and compiles information from such files.
• Provides factual information regarding City or unit activities and functions.
• Reviews computer-produced reports for accuracy and makes corrections as required.

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The Parks and Recreation Department is composed of a Director and 22 full-time management positions. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Community Services, Parks, Facilities and Common Greens divisions.

The Parks Division is in charge of planning and maintaining the city’s parks, playgrounds, sports fields, and other landscaping. There are approximately 25 parks and play lots, including Sign Hill Park, which has 60 acres of open space, and Centennial Way Linear Park, a 3-mile pedestrian and bicycle trail. Amenities include Centennial Dog Park, bocce ball courts, an above-ground skate park, a variety of ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, picnic shelters and group picnic areas.
 

IDEAL CANDIDATE SECTION:

The ideal part-time Park Maintenance Worker will be able to prioritize work and coordinate multiple tasks while working cooperatively with a variety of people, consistently ensuring excellent customer service. Capable of organizing duties, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with minimal supervision to maintain parks and public facilities according to established standards. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have knowledge of basic techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used in park and landscape maintenance, as well as an understanding of occupational hazards and related safety practices.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintains all types of landscaped areas through mowing, watering, planting, trimming, weeding, and fertilizing.
• Applies insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
• Operates trucks, tractors, mowers, chippers, and related grounds and tree maintenance equipment.
• Cleans and perform minor repairs to park and recreation equipment, buildings, and related facilities; maintains and prepares athletic fields.
• Assists in the maintenance of sprinkler systems; assists in the maintenance and minor repair of power-driven equipment.
• As assigned, works extended or irregular hours.
• Assists in the general cleaning and maintenance of the Corporation Yard.
• Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: One year of experience in parks and landscape maintenance work is preferred. 

Training: Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Licenses/Certificates: All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license, and a satisfactory driving record.

SENIOR RECREATION LEADER

Part-time, non benefited Position

Summary Description

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor/coordinator, the Senior Recreation Leader is responsible for implementing programs at a given site, including administering program curriculum and supervising program staff.  This is an at-will, intermittent, part-time, hourly wage position without City-paid benefits.  Work a flexible work schedule, which may include evening, weekdays, weekends and holidays.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices:

• Implement all daily activities of a given program, including administration of program curriculum, leading program activities, monitoring and enforcing program rules and regulations, maintaining a safe environment and collecting any necessary paperwork.
• Instruct program participants in rules, model appropriate behavior, monitor strict adherence to program guidelines and enforce rules.
•      Exercise sound judgment in addressing behavior problems.
•      Responsible for appropriate use, maintenance and storage of all program supplies and equipment.
•      Establish and maintain a respectful and courteous working relationship with participants, volunteers, staff and those contacted in the course of work.
