SALARY

$19.00 - $23.00 per hour

This is a part-time, at-will, non-benefited position. Hours are limited to less than 1,000 hours per year.

BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Perform a variety of unskilled/semi-skilled maintenance or custodial duties involving manual labor of facilities, parks, storm drains, streets, etc.
• Clean and inspect facilities for vandalism or potential hazards.
• Sanitize surfaces, repair minor plumbing problems, diagnose basic sewer issues, replace components on fixtures.
• Maintain area(s) as assigned including parks and public buildings, performing basic repairs, inspections and landscaping.
• Load and unload supplies and materials.
• Assist with various areas of public works such as minor asphalt repairs, brush removal, facility repairs, stewardship of protected species, etc.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

The Organization 

Incorporated in 1927, Menlo Park is a general Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council is the City’s five-member governing body whose members are elected by district for four-year overlapping terms in general municipal elections. The Mayor and Vice Mayor each serve one-year terms and are selected annually by the City Council. The City Council appoints the City Manager and City Attorney as well as members of the Planning Commission and numerous advisory boards. The City Manager appoints all executive and management level positions. The Department

This position falls within the City Manager’s Office, which, under the direction of the City Manager, has responsibility for staff organizational management, personnel appointment, preparation and execution of the City budget, as well as administration of city ordinances and policies adopted by the City Council. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position working Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Wednesday 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM, and Friday 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM with occasional evening and weekend hours.

The Department

DEFINITION

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The emphasis of the Administrative Assistant series is on the accomplishment of general clerical and administrative support duties.

Administrative Assistant I

This is the entry level in the series. Employees perform routine duties under immediate supervision.

Administrative Assistant II

The is the journey level in the series. Employees perform both routine and more complex duties under general supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Immediate supervision is provided to the Administrative Assistant I. General supervision provided to the Administrative II and III is provided by the department head of designee. The Administrative Assistant III may lead or supervise assigned staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE

THE DEPARTMENT

The Paramedic ambulances respond to medical emergencies, as well as structure fires and other hazardous incidents. The Fire Department is an active participant in the San Mateo County automatic aid system and responds regularly in support of neighboring jurisdictions throughout the county, including the San Francisco International Airport.  Department members are eligible to participate on FEMA USAR California Task Force 3, sponsored by the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.  The department is also an active participant in the Bay Area Maritime Search and Rescue Council and regularly trains with other fire agencies and the United States Coast Guard.  

The City is planning for the replacement and expansion of two of its existing fire stations, modernizing and relocating the facilities to better serve the public.

In support of the San Mateo County automatic aid agreement, all entry level candidates will attend a regional, county-wide, fire academy where they will be introduced to all agencies in the county and rotate through a variety of training sites.  The roughly 12-week academy also includes specialized training depending on candidate certifications.  

MISSION STATEMENT

The South San Francisco Fire Department exists to protect the members of our residential and business communities, our neighbors and visitors, their property, and environment.  We will work to prevent injury and damage through education, fire prevention and to respond to the impact of fire, medical emergencies, natural and human-caused disasters, and release of hazardous materials.

An eligible employment list will be created for the position of Paramedic/Firefighter and will be used to fill current and future vacancies.  This classification encompasses the full range of firefighter duties and Paramedic Ambulance Transport Services.  Incumbents currently work a 2/4 work schedule with a 24-hour work cycle (2/24 hour shifts with 4 days off). THE DUTIES

Incumbents perform paramedic ambulance transport services, engage in medical aid, firefighting, and all other suppression and prevention activities to protect life and property; drive, operate, and maintain fire apparatus and equipment; assist and participate in training, inspections, and related fire prevention and public education activities. 

Join San Bruno Community Services, Parks Department as a Lead Maintenance Worker! 

The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality programs, services, and spaces to benefit the health and well-being of the community. Within Community Services, the Parks Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance of all City’s outdoor recreation sites, including 20 parks covering 68 acres, 6 baseball fields, 128 acres of open space, all City owned facilities, over 7 miles of medians, and one dog park. 
 

Under the supervision of the Parks Field Supervisor, the Parks Lead Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled tasks and complex assignments in maintenance, repair, and construction work. The Lead Maintenance Worker is a working supervisor position. The position exercises direct supervision over crews engaged in service, maintenance, and repair. Work assignments may also involve considerable skill in various construction and mechanical crafts and the operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment. 

CORE DUTIES

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Assigns and reviews work of Maintenance Workers I/II and seasonal staff; trains, supervises, and reviews work of assigned staff; provides input into performance evaluations and performance issues.

• Inspects and repairs equipment at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are safe and functioning properly; maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, materials supply, athletic field layouts and surfaces, base positioning and installation, and layouts of field markings.

• Determines and marks the locations of irrigation system wiring and water lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.

• Responds to complaints and resolves problems regarding functional areas such as tree conditions, ball field conditions irrigation system problems, park, building and ball field lighting, water leaks, parks facility issues.

• Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools assigned to their area of responsibility by checking equipment and tools and maintaining maintenance records, and refers defects to supervisory staff.

• Safely operates vehicles/equipment of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, soil and sand, concrete, performance of tree work; and other job functions; operates pneumatic tools and power tools.

• Oversees and participates in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including laying pipe, trenching and backfilling, determines safety and playability of sports fields and reports information to their supervisor, prunes trees and shrubs in conformance with established professional practices and safe working methods.

• Applies pesticides and utilizes best Integrated Pest Management practices for assigned areas of responsibility.

• Performs set up of traffic safety work zones utilizing traffic safety control devices as needed for work performed in areas such as medians, right-of ways, streets, and parks.

• Performs other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be a high school diploma or GED, and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing field maintenance work similar to that of a Maintenance Worker II with the City of San Bruno. 

HIGHLY DESIRABLE

• Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license. 

• Possession of a Qualified Pesticide Applicators Certificate. 

In addition, the ideal candidate possesses the following competencies:

• Having achieved a satisfactory level of technical or professional knowledge in parks
  maintenance; keeping up with current developments and trends in Community Services; leveraging expert knowledge to accomplish results.

• Taking prompt action to accomplish goals; achieve results beyond what is required; being proactive.

• Crafting and implementing practices that meet resident and organization’s needs; responding quickly to resolve difficult resident situations and maintain the confidence of the community.

• Provides for the selection, training, professional development and work evaluation of department staff; authorizes discipline as required; provides policy guidance and interpretation to staff.
• Contributes to the overall quality of the department’s service by developing, reviewing and implementing policies and procedures to meet legal requirements and City needs.
• Performs the duties of the City Engineer as prescribed by State law and City ordinances, including overseeing the preparation of engineering plans and specifications, the construction of public projects, and the administration of professional service, construction, maintenance and other contracts.
• Confers with and represents the department and the City in meetings with members of the City Council, members of boards and commissions, various governmental agencies, developers, contractors, business and industrial groups and the public.
• Oversees the development or update of the City’s Comprehensive Sewer and Water Plans, the Capital Improvement Plan and other plans related to municipal infrastructure.
