The City of Sunnyvale is seeking to fill the position of Public Safety Dispatcher with an energetic and highly motivated individual who possesses excellent customer service, technical and interpersonal skills.

 
Under general supervision of the Senior Public Safety Dispatcher, processes emergency and non-emergency calls for service; dispatches police, fire, medical, rescue, animal control or other emergency equipment, by telephone or radio, utilizing complex technical aids, such as computer aided dispatch systems (CAD); and performs related work as required.

The minimum qualifications required for this position are - Graduation from high school or tested equivalent; and Two years of experience dispatching police and/or fire services for a public safety agency utilizing contemporary dispatching technical tools, including computer aided dispatching systems; or successful completion of probation as a Public Safety Dispatcher-in-Training with the City of Sunnyvale.

GENERAL INFO

Under general supervision, the Recreation Leader I/II provides essential support to recreation programs and services by performing custodial tasks, event setup and teardown, program support, and minor maintenance duties at various facilities, including parks and community centers. This temporary, parttime position requires working up to 20 hours per week. The role involves ensuring the facilities are clean, safe, and operational while delivering excellent customer service. Performs other duties as assigned. 

UNIVERSAL POSITION DUTIES (Illustrative purposes only)

• Organize, inventory, and maintain facility materials and equipment.
• Assist in organizing and supervising recreational programs in any one or more of the following areas: children, adults, senior citizens, and participants with special needs at playgrounds, community centers, and other recreational areas.
• Open, close, and secure facilities, including locking gates and setting alarms.
• Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment according to event/program requirements.
• Perform light maintenance and cleaning tasks to ensure facility safety and upkeep.
• Enforce policies, maintain discipline, and provide customer service to patrons.
• Monitor and report facility issues and potential hazards.
• Assist with special events and activities as needed.
• Respond to and resolve patron inquiries and complaints.
• Participate in safety training and emergency procedures.
• Monitor facility rentals and provide customer service as needed.
• Lift and move, routinely and regularly, up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifting and/or moving over 60 pounds. Duties also include repetitive pushing; pulling; crawling; climbing; and prolonged periods of standing, lifting above the shoulders, working off a ladder, manual dexterity, and maintaining good vision and hearing.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

FACILITY ATTENDANT (Illustrative purposes only)

• Greet patrons, and provide information on programs, rentals, schedules, rules, and policies.
• Open, close, and secure facilities, including locking gates and setting alarms.
• Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment according to event/program requirements.
• Perform light upkeep and cleaning tasks to ensure facility safety and upkeep.
• Enforce policies, maintain discipline, and provide customer service to patrons.

SERVICE DESK (Illustrative purposes only)

· Greet patrons, answer and direct calls, and provide information on programs, rentals, schedules, rules, and policies.

· Open/close the facility and monitor for safety, cleanliness, and proper use.

· Check daily facility schedules and rental setup requirements.

· Use computer systems for data entry.

· Assist patrons with registration processing and POS transactions.

· Handle office tasks including mail distribution, shipments, and deliveries.

· Support office inventory management for supplies and equipment.

· Assist facility attendants and recreation programs as needed.

SCOREKEEPER (Illustrative purposes only)

· Greet, acknowledge, and interact with children, adults, parents and sports officials in a friendly and professional manner

· Responsible for setup and breakdown of different sports at different venues i.e. The RAC, Parkside, City Parks, etc.

· Keep score and use scoreboards for different sports: Basketball, volleyball, softball, badminton, etc.

· Keeps games moving, maintains game rules and manages game conflicts

· Strength is needed to lift and carry recreation equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for extended periods of time; and flexibility to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects

· Responsibilities include keeping score for youth, recreation, and middle school sporting events using various digital and analog forms of tracking methods

· Track score of youth sporting events via scoreboard technology or statistics booklet

· Organize, track and set-up specific sports equipment (i.e. volleyball poles and nets, basketball hoops and benches)

· Receives general supervision from the Youth and Adult Sports Coordinator

· Employees may interact with challenging staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

• One year of experience in a job-related field is preferred.

• Facility operations, customer service, basic event/program management, and safety practices.
• Ability to use custodial and operational equipment, communicate effectively, and work independently.

Special Requirements

• Ability to obtain a current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
• Ability to obtain a current California Food Handler Card.
• Ability to obtain a current Driver’s License and clean driving record is preferred.

Tools and Equipment Used

• Various hand tools and cleaning equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a recreation or community center facility.
• Operation of city vehicle.

They also provide essential support to recreation programs and services by performing custodial tasks, event setup and teardown, program support, and minor maintenance duties relating to aquatics. This temporary, parttime position requires working up to 20 hours per week. The role involves ensuring the health and safety of aquatic patrons, facilities are clean, safe, and operational while delivering excellent customer service. Performs other duties as assigned. 

UNIVERSAL POSITION DUTIES (Applicable to all roles; Illustrative Purposes Only)

• Monitor the swimming pool and enforce safety regulations.
• Assist with aquatics programs, special events, and facility upkeep.
• Test and maintain pool water chemistry.
• Set up and tear down for classes, programs, and events.
• Lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
• Work outdoors in sun, rain, or wind as needed.

POSITION-SPECIFIC DUTIES

LIFEGUARD (Illustrative Purposes Only)

• Maintain a "rescue-ready" posture and scan assigned zones for drowning emergencies.
• Work in a rotation with other lifeguards across indoor and outdoor stations.
• Assist with facility operations, special events, and customer service.
• Attend weekly and monthly safety trainings.
• Perform light cleaning and maintenance tasks to ensure facility safety.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Minimum Age: 15
• Education: High school diploma or GED not required.
• Certifications:
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (or ability to obtain).
  • First Aid & CPR Certification.

SWIM INSTRUCTOR (Illustrative Purposes Only)

• Teach American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim lessons following provided lesson plans.
• Maintain open communication with parents and participants.
• Assist with emergency responses and pool safety as trained.
• Attend weekly and monthly safety trainings.
• Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure facility upkeep.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Minimum Age: 15
• Education: High school diploma or GED not required.
• Skills: Swimming proficiency at American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4.
• Preferred Certification: Water Safety Instructor

SWIM INSTRUCTOR II – LESSON MANAGER (Illustrative Purposes Only)

• Oversee swim instructors and ensure consistent lesson delivery.
• Arrive 30 minutes prior to and stay 30 minutes after swim lessons for setup and breakdown.
• Assist with instructor training and safety drills.
• Maintain and review lesson records to ensure program quality.
• Perform facility upkeep and provide customer service.

Minimum Qualifications:

• All requirements from Swim Instructor, PLUS:
• Experience: At least 6 months of experience as a Swim Instructor.

LIFEGUARD II - POOL MANAGER (Illustrative Purposes Only)

• Supervise lifeguards and enforce safety procedures.
• Conduct lifeguard rotations and monitor staff performance.
• Ensure staff maintain a “rescue-ready” posture and remain alert while on duty.
• Assist in planning and leading weekly and monthly safety trainings.
• Monitor pool chemicals and water quality.
• Open, close, and secure facility as needed.
• Provide customer service, event support, and light facility maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Minimum Age: 18
• Experience: At least 6 months of experience as a lifeguard.
• Preferred Certification: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Outdoor environment with exposure to sun, wind, and pool chemicals.
• Variable hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Ability to work in loud or quiet environments depending on location.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED

• Pool maintenance equipment, hand tools, and cleaning supplies.
• Radios and phones for communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Frequent swimming, walking, sitting, and lifting.
• Regularly lift/move 25 lbs, occasionally over 100 lbs.

• Upon successful completion of the Public Safety Officer in Training requirements, incumbents promote to Public Safety Officer I ($136,764 - $158,321).
• Upon successful completion of all phases of training, members of the Public Safety Officer I classification promote to Public Safety Officer II ($144,724 - $180,310).
• This position has an excellent benefit package, including 2.7% at 57 retirement plan.

Under immediate supervision of a Public Safety Lieutenant or Captain, either currently attends the California POST Basic Academy and is learning to perform a wide range of public safety work involving the protection of life and property including law enforcement, crime prevention, fire suppression, rescue, and basic life support activities; or has graduated from the California POST Basic Academy within the last 12 months; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 

The position of Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is the training level classification for general police and fire work for those incumbents not affiliated with an agency and currently enrolled in a police academy. Incumbents are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until successful completion of the police academy. Assignment to this classification is temporary. If incumbents do not successfully complete a police academy, they will be terminated.  Incumbents hired after the graduation from the California POST Basic Academy are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until they are promoted to Public Safety Officer I.

Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is distinguished from the higher-level Public Safety Officer I in that the latter is a sworn position where incumbents continue training for both police and fire duties. Incumbents must successfully complete the police academy prior to being promoted to the classification of Public Safety Officer I.
