The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position Duties

The City of San Jose, Animal Care and Services Division is seeking Veterinarians to work at the Animal Care Center with part-time, and/or relief in either/or, shelter medicine and/or the shelter’s public high quality, high volume spay/neuter clinic. The Animal Shelter Veterinarian may perform all aspects of shelter medicine in a large animal shelter. Duties may include routine spay/neuter surgeries on cats, dogs, and other animals as indicated. This position provides direct care and treatment of homeless animals entering the City of San Jose’s Animal Care Center.
 
In addition, this position is required to diagnose, treat, and/or recommend euthanasia. Registered Veterinary Technicians will be assigned to assist this position with the preparation and post-surgery processes of spay/neuter and other surgical procedures. This is a position reporting to the Shelter Manager of Animal Care and Services. This classification is represented by City Association of Management Personnel (CAMP).

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

•  Directs, coordinates and performs the screening, diagnosis, and basic and emergency medical treatment of animals in the shelter.
•  Performs or supervises the visual monitoring of impounded animals, including those that may be isolated or quarantined for signs of illness or unusual behavior.
•  Performs surgical procedures, including spay/neuters and vaccinates animals to prevent diseases. 
•  Maintains accurate medical records of animals.
•  Effectively communicates the condition and status of animals with staff, public and animal groups. 
•  Advises staff on matters within the veterinary field.
•  Orders, maintains and controls the drugs used at the shelter and in the field.
• Trains appropriate staff in administering first aide and vaccinations to animals, the performance of euthanasia and other paramedical duties.
• Performs and directs staff to perform euthanasia of animals that are irremediably suffering from serious illness or severe injury, as necessary
• Ensures that shelter staff participates in a comprehensive disease prevention program for the animal shelter. 
• Participates in special spay/neuter or vaccination clinics.
• Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; providing technical guidance to staff; ensuring staff are trained; and making hiring, termination and disciplinary recommendations.
• Ensures compliance of activities to codes and all legal regulations.

Physical Requirements:
Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 50 pounds while handling animals and equipment. Employees may be exposed to cold and hot temperatures, loud noises, odors, dust, air contaminants, blood borne pathogens while using hypodermic needles on animals and may be exposed to animal scratches and bites.

There is one (1) full-time, regular hire Senior Civil Engineer vacancy in the Engineering Division. 

Under direction, the Senior Civil Engineer, plans, manages, and coordinates the engineering program. Using broad parameters of departmental policy guidelines, this position exercises substantial initiative, judgment, and expertise to meet program and project outcomes. The Senior Civil Engineer creates the scope on large civil engineering projects with complex budgets and timelines, integrating numerous elements that significant stakeholder involvement and sensitivity. This position provides direction and mentorship to more junior staff and oversees both technical and administrative work performed by their staff and ensures that projects are completed efficiently and effectively for the public good. Informing the public and Board of Supervisors, selecting consultants, preparing contract documents, reviewing project plans and specifications prepared by consultants, and administering contracts during construction are performed by the Senior Civil Engineer. 

Signing bonus:
In addition to a competitive compensations package, new, full-time, regular hire Senior Civil Engineers are eligible to receive a $10,000 signing bonus which will be split into two equal payments: 50% at time of hire (i.e. first paycheck) and the remaining 50% after successful completion of their probationary period.

Hybrid schedule:
The Department of Public Works has embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely. However, the successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for meetings, work assignments, and/or disaster service work upon short notice, as needed and deemed appropriate. Supervising Mental Health Clinicians supervise and coordinate the professional work of mental health professionals, paraprofessionals and interns in San Mateo County and participate in program planning, administration, and evaluation; and provide specialized psychiatric casework counseling and therapeutic services to adults and youth in the field. The current vacancy is in Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) Crisis and Outreach Team including the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT), the Crisis Response Team (CRT), Healthcare for the Homeless (HCH), and Homeless Engagement Assessment Linkage (HEAL) team.

Supervising Mental Health Clinicians are members of the Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Leadership Team and work with collaborative partners on system wide initiatives focused on improving services and service delivery. This position reports directly to a Clinical Services Manager.

Services provided include supervising mental health clinicians working in tandem with city law enforcement for behavioral health crises and/or homeless outreach mental health programs throughout the county, supervising the program specialist for the Crisis and Outreach Team, and conducting trainings and presentations for various partner agencies and the community.

The teams include psychiatrist, social workers, marriage and family therapists, SUD case manager, mental health counselor, and community workers who are consumers or family members. The clinical teams may also work with clinical interns.

The ideal candidate will possess:

• Knowledge of system of care principles.

Class Characteristics

This entry-level classification in the Construction Inspector series reports to a Senior Civil Engineer through a Construction Coordinator in the Construction Inspection Section of the Public Works Engineering Division. It is characterized by the responsibility to learn and to inspect public works construction projects for compliance with codes and specifications. Incumbents' assignments, objectives and work methods are specified; issues of fact are referred to the supervisor; review of work is ongoing and responsibility for achieving work objectives rests with a supervisor. Incumbents' work will gradually be done on a more independent basis subject to occasional review in progress through questions/problems and consultation with the supervisor and the section head. Overview:

The Department

The City’s Volunteer Fire Department is older than the City itself, founded as a volunteer corps in 1861 to replace a U.S. Army fire brigade. The largest volunteer urban Fire Department in California has undergone change to become a combination department, composed of both paid and volunteer staff. In addition, the department provides Advance Life Support (ALS) services and responds to over 3,000 calls for service annually. The Position

The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented problem-solver with a focus on public service. Recruits enter a training program to develop skills necessary to demonstrate abilities to respond to emergency fire and medical alarms, to protect life and property, to participate in fire suppression training and emergency medical training, to assist with station, apparatus and equipment maintenance, and to do related work as required. $18.08 - $18.99  -  $19.93 -  $20.93 -  $21.96 per hour.  This is a part-time position, paid sick leave benefit available. Initial appointments are generally made at the first step of this five step scale.  Hours will range from 15-25 hours per week.  Candidates that make the eligibility list may be selected for shifts as needed throughout the year.  Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays throughout the entire year.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Applications will be screened and a limited number of the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may consist of an oral panel interview, department interview, or in the form of a practical demonstration of skill and ability, or any combination of these.  A passing score of 70% is required to make the eligibility list.   Recommendations for appointment from this list will be made to the Recreation Supervisor, who will make the final decision.  Depending on the number of applicants, this process may be altered.  Prior to appointment, a background check, including fingerprinting for submission to the Department of Justice must be completed, as well as TB screening.
