The Role:

The City of Redwood City is seeking Firefighters or Firefighter/Paramedics who, under direction of the Fire Captain, will perform firefighting and fire prevention duties aimed at protecting life and property, operate and maintain firefighting equipment, and provide basic medical assistance.  Firefighters also provide Basic Life Support first responder pre-hospital emergency medical care and emergency medical assistance, perform minor station maintenance, and participate in training to maintain skills.  Please see the Firefighter/Engineer job description for more details.

Required Qualifications:

A typical way to demonstrate the applicant possesses the required knowledge and ability may be obtained through the following ways:

1. Minimum of 30 semester college units.  Completion of college credits in the study of Fire Science or similar field.
2. High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D. or California Certificate of Proficiency).
3. Successful completion of a Firefighter 1 equivalent training program, or possession of a California State Fire Training Firefighter 1 certificate.

Required Certification and License:

1. Must possess a valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate or valid Paramedic license.
2. Provide proof of a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPT) certificate prior to appointment to the classification of Firefighter/Engineer.  CPAT must be current.
3. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.  Driving record will be reviewed and any infractions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Knowledge of:

• Basic life support

Ability To:

• Act in accordance with departmental policies, rules, and instructions in the field of firefighting.
• Apply principles practices and procedures of modern firefighting.
• Safely operate fire apparatus, equipment, tools, devices, facilities and use properly.
• Perform tasks relating to firefighting, medical aid and other calls for assistance.

Special Requirements - Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

• Must be eighteen years of age;
• Vision Standards: Must pass a pre-employment medical exam according to the standards set by The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and freedom from color blindness;
• Hearing Standards: Must pass a pre-employment medical exam according to NFPA;
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, lift and carry in excess of 100 lbs.; pull and/or drag 175 lbs.; work in the following environments: cold, extreme heat, extreme noise, outdoors, confining work spaces, elevated areas; work with electrical hazards, vibration, chemicals, dust, toxic waste, mechanical hazards, and explosive materials; availability for shift work.
• This position shall serve a probationary period of eighteen (18) months.
• As a condition of employment, employees shall comply with mandated medical monitoring.

 DEFINITION

Under supervision, performs sub-professional engineering office work related to Public Works improvements; elementary field surveying; computer-aided drafting and design work; and related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of responsible sub-professional engineering work; computes and posts simple engineering data; computer-aided drafting, design, and mapping; revises, reviews, files, and updates engineering plans and maps; assists field survey and traffic survey crews as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: The elementary principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; drafting symbols used in construction work; basic engineering office equipment; modern personal computers and related computer software; principles and practical application of computer-aided drafting, design, and mapping systems.

Ability to: Learn the use of surveying equipment and techniques; learn basic construction inspection procedures; accurately make and verify mathematical computations; perform neat and accurate drafting; collect engineering field data, and make field notes; maintain accurate records; effectively operate computer-aided drafting, design and mapping software; effectively use modern office software; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work flexible hours; deal effectively and courteously with the public and general contractors; attend work and perform duties as assigned.

Education: Completion of 45 semester college units with major in civil engineering or related course of study.

License: Possession of valid Class C California Driver's License.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Town of Atherton invites you to apply for the position of Associate Engineer in the Public Works Department. The position, general supervision, performs various professional field and office engineering work related to the management, planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the Town’s public works infrastructure, associated with the Capital Improvement Program (CIP); provides project management oversight, coordination and administration; conducts development plan reviews and inspections; confers with developers, contractors, and representatives of other agencies regarding facility and infrastructure development and maintenance; administers professional services and construction contracts; provides professional staff assistance to the Director of Public Works, other departments, and the public in areas of expertise; performs a variety of studies and prepares and presents staff reports; and assist in the development of the Department budget and monitors revenue and expense budgets on an ongoing basis.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

• Plans, manages, designs, and inspects all phases of civil engineering public works construction projects, including defining the scope of the project; coordinating with permitting and public utility agencies; applying engineering principles and practices to specific problems; coordinating construction schedules with other projects and agencies; preparing and reviewing cost estimates; and inspecting construction of projects to ensure compliance with construction documents; performs related planning and design work.
• Review of proposed private development projects; including issues related to public works, hydrology, grading, scheduling, traffic control, and erosion; prepares public works conditions of approval for proposed development.
• Reviews construction plans prepared by consulting engineers and private contractors; checks plans for conformance with regulations; reviews engineering calculations; participates in pre-design, construction, and coordination meetings and issues construction permits.
• Develops consultant requests for proposal for professional and/or construction services and the advertising and bid processes; evaluates proposals and recommends project award; administers contracts after award; ensures contractor compliance with Town standards and specifications, time and budget estimates; analyzes and resolves complex problems that may arise; recommends and approves field changes as required.
• Monitors and pursues grant opportunities for improvements in public works programs.
• Participates in development of the Town’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP)
• Participates in the San Mateo County Cleanwater Program and assists with compliance and reporting associated with the Minicipal Regional (NPDES) Stormwater Permit.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge of:

• Civil engineering principles, techniques, policies, and procedures,

• Prepare, understand, and interpret engineering construction plans, specifications, and other contract documents.
• Assist in and develop and administer contracts for professional services and construction in a public agency setting.
• Effectively represent the department and the Town in meetings with governmental agencies, community groups, and various business, professional, and regulatory organizations and individuals.

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Senior Information Systems Manager, this position provides system support during implementation and ongoing support after implementation including report writing, configuration, routine inquiries and user support for the District’s various enterprise technology systems including UKG Pro Workforce Management Time & Attendance and Central Square Technologies Finance Enterprise.   The Business Information Systems Engineer works with end-users, vendors, and members of the Information Systems Department to identify, analyze, and resolve systems issues and provide maximum capability and satisfaction to users.

Essential Responsibilities

• Serves as a technical lead of the enterprise application
• Focused on delivering excellent customer service
• Adhere to incident, problem, change management, and other Information Systems best practices
• Plan, organize, direct and coordinate the ongoing automation and usage of the district-wide application systems
• Develop and maintain user and technical knowledge of application systems
• Serve as the liaison between application system users, vendor provided help desk as well as the Information Systems Department
• Plan, co-ordinate and test system upgrades
• Fulfill users various data mining requests
• Support the various large interface integrations between the application systems and fixing data problems that occur in these interfaces
• Develop and provide user training for all modules of the systems

The City of Hayward is seeking a Senior Utilities Engineer with a water and/or wastewater background to supervise, direct, plan, and coordinate the activities of the Utilities Division. The Senior Utilities Engineer is a mid-management level position that performs, oversees, and directs engineering activities including planning, conceptual design, final design, cost estimating, project bidding, services during construction and construction management for a variety of projects in wastewater treatment, water storage and distribution, sewer collection, and storm water management. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of wastewater treatment and related water/wastewater infrastructure projects. This position will serve as a key member of the team that will manage and deliver a $100 million treatment system upgrade for the City’s Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) to incorporate nutrient removal into the treatment process.  
 
DEFINITION
Under general direction, supervise, direct, plan, and coordinate the assigned functions and activities of the Engineering Section of the Utilities Division.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a mid-management level position that performs, oversees, and directs all assigned activities of the Utilities engineering section, including planning, conceptual design, final design, cost estimating, project bidding process, services during construction and construction management for variety of projects in water distribution, sewer collection, storm water management, and wastewater treatment.  This position is distinguished from that of subordinate Associate Civil Engineer position by its responsibility for the supervision of assigned engineering and technical staff, in addition to engineering and technical responsibilities for project development, design, and construction management for more complex projects.  This position is distinguished from Deputy Director of Public Works for Utilities by the latter position's overall responsibility for all aspects of the Utilities Division functions.
 
 

• Principles and practices of civil engineering.

Experience:  Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in professional engineering work in the design and construction of water and wastewater projects including one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.
 
Education:   Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university in civil engineering, or a closely related field with major work in civil engineering.  A master's degree is desirable.
 
Licenses and Certificates: Possession and maintenance of a certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer (Civil or Mechanical) in the State of California.
 
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California driver's license.
