IDEAL CANDIDATE

The City of San Rafael Public Works Department is seeking a full-time Associate Civil Engineer to lead a variety of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects related to Buildings/Facilities, Parks, Storm Drain, and Transportation.

The Ideal Candidate will possess expertise in municipal engineering and have strong critical thinking, communication and organizational skills that allow them to effectively manage all phases of multiple capital programs and/or projects. They will have a strong sense of customer service and the ability to provide recommended solutions to complex engineering and service challenges. They may serve as a supervisor to a small group of engineers and/or paraprofessional engineering staff. The successful candidate will support the CIP Division by effectively and efficiently delivering the design and construction of various capital improvements while collaborating with other DPW divisions and City departments. • Develops Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) and participate with other department staff in the selection of consulting engineers.
• Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of plans, specifications and estimates pertaining to construction projects. 
• Makes engineering calculations, completes design drawings, makes and revises maps, charts and diagrams.
• Conducts pre-construction meetings with contractors to establish job requirements, i.e., timing, noise level, traffic impact.
• Performs field inspections of various municipal construction projects, in progress and upon completion.
• Prepares written reports on civil engineering issues/projects for the department.
• Meets with a variety of public and private officials, individually and/or in a group setting, on civil engineering matters.
• Research and make recommendations on civil engineering issues/problems.
• Performs project management on Capital Projects during the design, environmental, bidding, and construction phases of the project.
• Performs Resident Engineer duties on Capital Projects during construction.
• Performs inspection and enforcement duties to ensure compliance with applicable design standards, specifications, contracts and legal documents, codes and ordinances.
• Meets with State, Federal, Local Districts, Agencies, consultants, and engineers to discuss project guidelines, design parameters, policies and procedures.
• Performs work in accordance with local, State, and Federal standards and regulations.
• Designs and prepares plans and specifications and cost estimates for a variety of public works projects, including but not limited to streets, storm drains, bridges, parks, traffic signals, parking lots, water facilities, infrastructure improvements and other public facilities. Researches project design requirements, performs calculations, prepares estimates of time and materials costs and determines sequencing and detour requirements.
• Serves as Project Engineer (size and complexity based on classification), including serving as design team leader, handling contract administration and providing design support for the inspector during construction.
• Review plans and maps submitted by private developers for conformity with laws, ordinances, City imposed requirements and accepted professional standards with the goal of protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the community. Performs certain administrative duties associated with private development approvals such as preparing agreements, collecting fees, obtaining dedications, and coordinating with other agencies and City departments.
• Investigates field problems affecting the public, property owners, contractors and maintenance operations; collects the necessary data or assigns the collection of data to technical personnel; develops recommendations and meets with the appropriate parties to discuss and implement recommendations.
• Provides engineering information, including City requirements related to property improvements, to the public and other City departments. Arranges and participates in conferences with other engineers, developers and the general public on engineering problems.
• Assigns investigation, design and drafting tasks to subordinates, reviews completed work and assists in the developing solutions to difficult problems. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

The Associate Civil Engineer is the journey level classification in the engineering job class series. This job class requires:

• Registration as a licensed Civil Engineer in the state of California and 4 years of responsible post degree engineering experience (a master’s degree shall count for 1 year of post degree engineering experience).
• A valid drivers’ license 

Under direction, an Associate Civil Engineer performs difficult and complex engineering work and may serve as a supervisor to a small group of engineers and/or paraprofessional engineering staff. The position calls for a high degree of initiative, technical proficiency, and judgement.

HOUSING OFFICER

The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a Housing Officer to oversee the Housing Division in the Community Development Department, responsible for the City's affordable housing programs, human services funding, federal grants and homeless services. The ideal candidate will be a passionate affordable housing professional known for being creative and solution-oriented and will be well-versed in state and federal housing legislation and familiar with the unique challenges presented by California's housing market. This position manages the City's varied federal, state and local housing programs and projects and is responsible for managing the technical, fiscal and policy aspects of complex projects and programs. This position serves as liaison to the Housing and Human Services Commission which advises the City Council on funding and policy related to affordable housing and human services. Position Summary

This role will also be providing excellent customer service, addressing fitness-related inquiries, maintaining a positive and motivating environment for everyone, and ensuring the fitness facility is clean, safe, and fully operational. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.  

• Certification in personal training or group fitness instruction required (e.g., ACE, NASM, or other recognized certification).  

• At least one year of experience in fitness instruction, personal training, or a related field preferred.  

• Experience in group instruction and one-on-one training is highly desirable. 

Knowledge and Skills

This position requires a knowledge of general fitness principles, exercise techniques, and wellness practices, instructing and motivating individuals or groups in a fitness setting, excellent communication to provide clear instruction and positive feedback and assessing client needs and creating individualized fitness programs. The position also requires ability to operate and maintain fitness equipment safely. 

Special Requirements: 

• Current certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). 

• Fitness certifications (e.g., Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor) from a nationally recognized organization.

Position Duties

The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill 2 full-time Maintenance Worker I vacancies in the Parks Division.

The salary range for this classification is: $68,473.60 - $83,304.00

Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

This is the journey-level class in the Maintenance Worker classification series responsible for performing the full range of semi-skilled tasks for assigned maintenance operations and programs. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II in that the latter class performs the more complex work assigned to the series.

Some assignments require candidates to be willing and able to work weekends, holidays and/or other shifts as needed.

Duties of the Maintenance Worker I position include, but are not limited to:

• Maintaining park grounds which may include, but is not limited to: irrigation, cultivation, pruning, planting, and transplanting a variety of turf, shrubs, trees, and plants. 

• Operating mowing equipment in parks and athletic fields and operating triplex gang/rotary mowers, power edgers, tractors, rototillers, sprayers, dump and other trucks, power chain saws and other light power equipment and hand tools used in grounds and maintenance work. 

• Applying fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers. 

• Maintaining and making minor repairs to playgrounds, picnic areas, athletic fields and sport courts, park trails, and firebreaks as well as make minor repairs and adjustments to irrigation systems, mowers, and miscellaneous equipment. 

• Performing clean-up and litter pick-up functions, cleaning pools and fountains, scheduling automatic irrigation controllers, maintaining work-related records, and preparing corresponding reports. 

• Explaining programs and policies to the public, providing lead guidance to less experienced workers, assisting in firefighting and rescue duties in wilderness park areas, and may be responsible for vehicle and pedestrian traffic safety in work areas. 

• Must be willing and able to lead various unpaid labor and volunteer participants.

The Recreation Division is responsible for developing innovative, diverse, and community-centered programs and services at the City’s park and recreation facilities.

The Albert J. Boro Community Center and Pickleweed Community Park are important facilities managed by the Recreation Division. The Albert J. Boro Community Center and Pickleweed Park are located in the heart of the Canal neighborhood, a vibrant and diverse area that has traditionally been marked by socio-economic disparities compared to the rest of San Rafael. The facility is heavily utilized and is an important resource for a predominantly Spanish-speaking community. Programming of the facility is supported by the City Council-appointed Pickleweed Advisory Committee.

The Community Center is co-located with the Pickleweed Library and is a successful example of joint and collaborative use between the City’s Library and Recreation Divisions. The Pickleweed Library is scheduled for major renovation starting in Fall 2025, with select library programs relocating into the Community Center. Pickleweed Park is currently wrapping up another major renovation, which included converting two full-size soccer fields to all-weather turf, and adding new amenities, including a basketball court, fitness equipment, play area, and gazebo. The park is expected to be fully re-opened in late July.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Recreation Supervisor will oversee the Albert J. Boro Community Center and Pickleweed Park, serving as a key leader in enhancing recreational services for the surrounding community.

The ideal candidate for the Recreation Supervisor position will be a dynamic and service-oriented leader with a strong background in recreation programs and services, staff supervision, and community engagement. They will have demonstrated experience in planning, organizing, and overseeing recreation programs and services that align with the diverse needs of the community. A successful candidate will be skilled in fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment, managing and mentoring staff, and implementing innovative programs that enhance recreation services.

This individual will be an effective communicator and problem solver, adept at engaging with community stakeholders, fairly and transparently balancing the needs of diverse user groups and ensuring that programs and services meet the needs of a multilingual community. Experience with City Boards, Commissions, and Committees; diverse program offerings (multilingual and older adult programming, rentals, gymnasiums, etc.); and multiuse sports fields are a plus.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience in budget management, cost recovery strategies, and policy implementation to support recreation programs and services. They will be committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring that recreation programs are welcoming and accessible to all. • Participates in program budget development, and monitoring.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE  

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledges, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be: BA in Recreation and four years of recreation experience including two years in a lead or supervisory position. Valid drivers license.

What You’ll Do

The Librarian I/II performs a variety of professional librarian duties in the activities of the library including reference, cataloging, interlibrary loans, collection development, programming and outreach for children's or adult services; and other related work as required. The current vacancy may be filled at either level based on experience. Depending upon class level and assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 

• Advise and assist library patrons; demonstrate the use of on-line library catalogs, databases and other user aids; refer patrons to other appropriate agencies if appropriate.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services in such areas as children, adult, and others using various themes and technologies; recommend program and procedure changes.
• Perform outreach to the community, community organizations, and schools within established design and framework.
• Serve on materials selection committee for the library; select and deselect materials for assigned area; evaluate and remove materials from the collection.
• Serve at a reference desk; research and respond to difficult or technical reference questions.
• Attend and represent the library at professional meetings as required.
• Supervise and train assigned staff.
