Throughout the internship, you will gain exposure to employee benefits and incentive programs, recruitment and hiring processes, payroll administration, labor agreements, HR compliance, and policy development. You’ll build practical, real-world HR experience in a fast-paced, collaborative, and supportive workplace. Additionally, you will gain hands-on experience with NeoGov, a leading applicant tracking system used by public agencies nationwide, as well as Tyler Munis HRIS and payroll systems. ABOUT THE TEAM

WORK SCHEDULE 

This internship can start as early as May 26, 2026, and end as late as September 30, 2026. This paid internship is offered at 15 – 25 hours per week with flexible scheduling. 

The official start and end date of the internship will be determined at the time of hire. Work hours are generally Monday – Friday between 8:00am – 5:00pm.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Provide support for recruitment activities, including job postings and interview coordination.
• Assist in supporting the preparation of the City’s annual Health Fair and wellness initiatives.
• Assist with tasks related to the Employee Appreciation Committee.
• Assist with employee wellness newsletter and other activities.
• Prepare and/or update employee safety program materials.

POLICE ASSISTANT

Salary Range: $20.84 to $32.41/hour; non-benefitted position, DOE

DEFINITION

The Police Assistant is a civilian, non-sworn, uniformed position that is responsible for a variety of customer service-based interactions with the community. Duties include non-hazardous enforcement of municipal parking laws and regulations as well as clerical front counter tasks related to phone and walk-in contacts at the police department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Lieutenant and Traffic Sergeant. Projects are assigned, and the person usually works with very little supervision. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES

• Handle confidential administrative duties at the front desk. Greets telephone callers and visitors to department; screens and handles inquiries of a general or specific nature; takes messages.
• Takes information from the public regarding thefts, accidents, lost and found property, and other incidents that do not require the presence of a sworn law enforcement officer at the scene; completes standard police reports for review by staff supervisors or sworn supervisory staff.

• Perform a variety of research & staff work; prepare reports.
• Maintain records using computers and various filing systems.
• Coordinate Parking Permits for business employees.
• Enforces parking ordinances and the Town’s Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Program, issues parking citations; follows-up on complaints regarding abandoned or illegally parked vehicles; issues citations and arranges for the towing or other abatement measures. Receive and respond to complaints and reports of routine parking incidents from the public.
• Respond to public complaint of abandoned vehicles; document and schedule tows for abandoned vehicles; and ensures proper disposition of illegally parked vehicles; patrols city streets and issues citations on vehicles parked in an unlawful manner. Mark vehicles to detect abuse of timed areas.
• Operate computer equipment and two-way radio as related to employment.
• Directs traffic at crash, crime, and/or congestion scenes.
• Investigates and prepares reports on burglary, petty theft, lost and found property, missing persons, property damage, accidents, Town Ordinance violations, abandoned vehicles and other incidents.
• Assists with maintaining evidence and property in the Evidence Room. Coordinates receiving and cataloging evidence and found property, maintaining records of property movement, processing, and disposition.
• Assist with transporting, storing, photographing, releasing, or destroying property pursuant to state law and established procedures.
• As required testifies in court.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
• Perform duties within OSHA standards.
• Must be flexible with hours and available to work some evenings and occasional weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge: 

Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Ability to:     

Effectively communicate verbally and through written correspondence; understand and follow verbal and written instructions, prepare clear and accurate reports, work cooperatively with others contacted in the course of work, handle multiple work requests under pressure, read and interpret maps, type at a speed of no less than 40WPM and have excellent customer service skills. Operation of radio communication equipment is required. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and stand outdoors for extended periods while performing traffic control assignments. Required to wear safety equipment, including a vest, belt, and uniform.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience: 

One (1) year of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience involving substantial public contact, or the exchange of detailed verbal information, including interpreting/clarifying rules, regulations, policies, or procedures and handling complaints as a primary element of the work performed. Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

Education:   

High school graduation or equivalent.

Licenses:      

California Driver's License, C.L.E.T.S. certification upon hire.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is recruiting an undergraduate or graduate-level City Emergency Management College Summer Intern for the summer of 2026. This internship will provide a significant opportunity to gain experience and exposure and accumulate skills that are used daily in city government emergency management programs that make substantial impacts to the community. The Emergency Management Team works year-round to ensure that community is prepared for disasters through planning, training, outreach, and coordination with local and regional partners. Joining our team means contributing to meaningful work that directly supports community reliance and preparedness. 

Working under the supervision of the Emergency Services and Volunteer Coordinator, the Emergency Management Intern will assist with planning, preparedness, outreach, and administrative functions that support OEM programs and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) readiness. Work includes both office-based and field support activities.

VOLUNTEER WORK SCHEDULE

• Help develop outreach materials and coordinate community education events

The Position: 

The Code Enforcement Officer will conduct inspections, lead investigations and complete plan reviews. The Code Enforcement Officer will also determine violations and work towards compliance related to storm water pollution, sanitary sewer overflows, water waste incidents, fats, oils and grease (FOG) source control, recycled water, and related municipal codes and ordinances. Additionally, the incumbent will complete various water, sewer, and recycled water sampling.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements: 

An Associate's Degree in City or Urban Planning, Business Administration, Construction Technology, Environmental Science, or closely related field.

Minimum Experience Requirements: 

Two (2) years of experience in public contact work involving zoning administrative investigation, building inspection or investigation, industrial/commercial pretreatment inspections, or stormwater pollution control, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Acceptable Substitution: 

One (1) year of additional related experience may be substituted for each year, up to two years of the required education.

License/Certifications: 

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.

For the Public Works Department:
A recognized professional certification within the stormwater management field (QSP, QISP, CSM, CESSWI, CPESC, CPMSM, etc.) within twelve (12) months of appointment and for the duration of employment.
 
 For the Water and Sewer Utilities Department:
 A Grade II Environmental Compliance Inspector Certification issued by the California Water Environment Association within twelve (12) months of appointment and for the duration of employment.
 A Water Distribution Operators Certification from the State Water Resources Control Board is desirable.
 A Cross-Connection Control Program Specialist Certification from the American Water Works Association is desirable.

Desirable Qualifications: 

A Bachelor's Degree in City or Urban Planning, Business Administration, Construction Technology, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or closely related field is desirable.
A Code Enforcement Officer Certification by the California Association of Code Enforcement Officers (CACEO) is desirable.

Other Requirements:  

May be required to occasionally work evenings and weekends.
Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.

About the Position: The Planning Department is seeking TWO interns who are interested in learning about open space and planning for ecologically sensitive public recreation. Their responsibilities may include researching and compiling project information, supporting community and stakeholder engagement, assisting with environmental review and documentation, researching new programs and initiatives, conducting field surveys and data collection, and using computer-based systems such as GIS, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator for analysis of data and preparation of documents related to Midpen programs, lands and facilities. The interns will work as a team and individually on assignments, including opportunities for field work to gain experience in data collection techniques and tools and on-the-job training in project management, planning research, analysis, and written communication.  For additional information about the position, see the Job Description on our website. Basic Requirements: Current enrollment in an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program, or trade school in a relevant field or a recent graduate (within the last 12 months). Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required before time of appointment. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions:  This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  The selected individuals will be required to work a minimum of three days on-site per week, and assignments may vary between field and office work. Field work is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week (within regular business days/hours). Regular business is conducted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm. Interns may work up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-to-9-month period. This is a non-benefited position.

About the Position:  The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) Seasonal Ranger Aide is an entry-level position, which provides the opportunity to learn and perform some duties of a ranger under the guidance of experienced ranger staff.  Ranger Aides provide visitor information and assistance, travelling by non-emergency Midpen vehicles and on foot throughout an assigned geographical region. Ranger Aides perform a variety of customer service duties such as educating and informing the public about Midpen land use regulations, public relations and provide general information services, but do not have law enforcement authority.  Ranger Aides will assist with routine maintenance work on Midpen land and facilities and may respond to assist with emergency calls. Seasonal employees are provided with a uniform.  The start date will be in June  and the selected individuals will continue working through December 2026.   See Job Description for additional information.

Requirements: Must have the ability to learn Midpen lands, pertinent laws and regulations and contact, educate and inform the public about the lands and regulations; administer first aid and CPR; operate and maintain various power tools and equipment; operate two-way radios; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; and other duties as assigned.

Certificates Needed: A valid California driver license is required upon appointment; valid professional rescuer CPR certificate and basic First Aid certificate (Midpen will offer training to candidates who do not possess CPR/First Aid certificates upon appointment).

Education & Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to graduation from high school. Six months experience working in a customer service-related field.  Some experience or training in a parks settings is desirable.

Schedules:  This is a full-time position. Employees are expected to work full-time (40 hours during the work week); however, school schedules may be accommodated around regular days/hours of operations.  Weekend work (Sat/Sun) is required, with two consistent days off each week (either Mondays/Tuesdays off OR Thursdays/Fridays off), depending on the field office operational needs. Incumbents will work an 8-hour workday (plus a 30-minute unpaid meal break). Daily start and end times will be the same for most workdays, typically scheduled within the range of 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Must be willing to work weekends, nights, holidays, or extended shifts and work with exposure to difficult circumstances, including exposure to challenging situations and upset individuals. Seasonal assignments will not exceed 950 hours or 7 months, whichever comes first, and do not include benefits.

Working Conditions: Most work is outdoors within Midpen’s open space lands with exposure to inclement weather conditions. This requires the ability to patrol on foot, off trail, and in rugged terrain.  Also requires the ability to perform related emergency services and maintenance and construction work on Midpen lands. Once trained, Ranger Aides may work alone for parts or all of their shifts. Must wear prescribed District uniform and adhere to strict safety procedures and work habits.

This recruitment seeks a team to support the City Clerk in a citywide digitizing project involving historical files, records, maps, drawings, and related materials.  The project is in progress and will likely run through June/July with team members working between 16~36 hours per week, depending on their availability and preferences.  Team members will work collaboratively in groups of three to four and must have the ability to lift and move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
