Selection Process:

Only candidates demonstrating possession of the requirements in the Qualifications section will be considered for immediate consideration. The Police Department's selection process includes an interview and successful completion of a thorough Background Investigation, including fingerprinting as well as polygraph exam, psychological evaluation, and medical examinations.

Under general supervision, subject to exercise of individual judgment and initiative, to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to control traffic flow and enforce state and local traffic regulations; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

An incumbent in this position performs a variety of law enforcement activities during an assigned shift, which may include crime response, patrol, investigation, traffic enforcement, crime prevention and public safety, case presentation and variable shifts. They wear uniforms, carry weapons, drive patrol cars or ride motorcycles and must comply with departmental grooming standards. In addition, they work under potentially adverse and hazardous conditions and are on call.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Patrols an assigned area in radio car, on motorcycle, or on foot; answers calls for protection of life and private property, and the enforcement of city, county and state laws; conducts preliminary or full investigations depending on assignment, of prowlers, burglaries, thefts, holdups, accidents, deaths and other disturbances; directs traffic, including regulation of vehicle flow at emergency or congested situations; stops drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of laws; warns drivers against unlawful practices; collects and presents evidence with criminal prosecutions; serves warrants and subpoenas; prepares reports of arrests made, investigations conducted, and unusual incidents observed; gives information and directions to the public. Assists in maintaining police records and types records and reports; operates headquarters radio telephone equipment to dispatch officers on patrol; as ordered, acts as lead officer in the field on a shift. Performs basic investigation, consulting and crime prevention work in assisting to control juvenile delinquency; performs such other basic police work as attending fire scenes to assist in the protection of life and property, parade and crowd controlling duties, and engaging in problem-solving skills and tactics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To qualify for competition in this entry-level examination, you must:

1.         Be 21 years of age.

2.         Possess a United States high school diploma, or G.E.D. with qualifying scores, or have passed the California High School Proficiency Examination, or attained a two-year or four-year degree from a college or university accredited by the Western Association of Colleges and Universities.

3.        Have satisfactorily completed a P.O.S.T. approved academy.

4.         Possess a valid Class CCalifornia Driver's License by date of appointment.

5.         Possess a personal history which is compatible with the effective performance of sworn police duties.

6.         Have the physical strength, stamina and agility adequate to perform all duties of a Police Officer.

7.         Hear well enough to comprehend radio transmissions and long-range conversations.

8.         Have adequate written and oral communication skills to give instructions and explanations, conduct information-gathering interviews and write reports.

9.        Be able to deal with a variety of people and situations, exercising judgment, tact and self-restraint.

10.       Have adequate reading skills to understand and interpret orders, bulletins, laws, codes and court

             decisions.

11.        Be willing to work irregular hours and days and at various locations in the City.

·         The Police Officer Trainee is a temporary position with the City of Daly City; an incumbent in this position receives benefits which include only Workers Compensation and Unemployment Insurance and Medicare.

·         The Police Officer Trainee will attend a P.O.S.T. Certified Academy. Upon successful completion of the academy, the trainee will be appointed to the Civil Service position of Police Officer.

·         At the time of appointment to the Civil Service position of Police Officer, the employee will be informed of City employment rights and available benefits.

·         All qualifications for Police Officer apply to the Police Officer Trainee position except for completion of the Police Academy.

The After School Instructor will plan, prepare, and instruct recreation activities (Instructor Aides will assist). Activities may include art, cooking, dance, STEM activities and other program areas. Programs are designed for children ages 4-12 years of age (school grades Transitional Kindergarten to 6th). Job site placement: Brier, Cabrillo, or Grimmer Elementary.

General supervision is provided by a Program Coordinator or Recreation Supervisor. The Instructor Lead may supervise an Instructor Aide.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
• At least one year's experience working with children in an academic or recreation setting.
• Must be willing and able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

The Position:  Police Officers perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; control traffic flow and enforce state and local regulations; perform investigative work; participate in and provide support and assistance to special department crime prevention and enforcement programs and do related police work as assigned. Duties and hours will vary with assignments.

THE POSITIONS

Under direct supervision, the Public Service Assistant II will perform litter/trash pick-up, barbeque maintenance, leaf/debris pick-up, and miscellaneous park duties in Central Park and other community parks.  The Public Service Assistant II will also perform related duties as assigned.
 
WORK SCHEDULE

The positions work up to a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week and may be required to work a regular shift that includes evening and weekend hours. These temporary assignments are limited to 999 hours per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).

A Program Specialist will plan, prepare and instruct recreation activities. Activities may include art, cooking, dance, pre-school program and other program areas. Programs are designed for children ages 4-17 (primarily 5-12) years of age.

Art programs may include drawing, painting, pastels, ceramics, crafts, sculpture, photography, weaving, printing, calligraphy, quilting, anime/manga, cartooning, clowning, and theater.

Cooking programs may include instruction on safety, using proper equipment and supplies and creativity.

• Different program areas will have different skills and knowledge requirements for the position; check with Recreation Supervisor. (For example: 6 ECE unites required for pre-school instructor)
• One school year teaching experience
• At least one year's experience working with children in an academic setting

The Program Coordinator for is a unique position that is primarily responsible for planning and coordination of all aspects of the ASES funded After School Academy (ASA) program. ASA provides students in grades 1st through 6th a safe space for expanded learning. Every day students have the opportunity to make social connections, experience enriching activities, and receive academic assistance. Students socialize and connect with our team and their peers daily. ASA supports students every school day immediately after school until 6pm. Our goal is to improve student's social, emotional, and academic potential through community, education, recreation, and enrichment.

• Coordinate all aspects of a After School Academy program
• Establish and maintain program records and computer databases
• Supervise and assign programming tasks to instructors and volunteers

• Relevant technical skill, education, experience or expertise
• Experience assisting with implementation of children and/or youth programs and activities.

• Excellent organizational and supervisory skills, be resourceful, flexible and able to work both alone or as a team member
• Must be reliable and be able to provide transportation
• Available to work Monday through Friday, 12:00pm-6:00pm schedule.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree with teaching experience preferred
• Experience in implementation and programming of ASES grant funded programs
• Ability to frequently interpret and translate a language other than the English language among students, parents and school-based staff members

The Facility Attendant provides operational supervision of community centers during the absence of full-time staff. Work hours may vary but will often be evenings, weekends and occasionally weekdays. THE POSITION

Library Aides provide customer service to library visitors. Duties include checking items in and out at the Checkout Desk, opening new library accounts, collecting fines and fees, shelving materials, and assisting library visitors in finding materials and using the computers. Other tasks may include processing materials, providing storytimes for children, and assisting with other public programs for children, teens and adults. This is an ideal job for someone who is friendly, computer savvy, enjoys working with the public, putting things in order, and is detail-oriented. Bilingual skills are desirable.

DEFINITION

Under supervision, to do library clerical, technical and customer service work, and related assignments as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Check materials in and out, sort materials, open new library accounts, explain library policies and resolve disputes, collect fines and fees, assist library patrons with self-checkout and public-use computers, printers, photocopiers, and scanners, answer routine information questions, complete opening and closing procedures, and perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:  Modern office and record-keeping procedures; use of office equipment and technology; numerical and alphabetical filing; basic mathematical principles.

Ability to: 

Provide excellent customer service; apply and explain library policies; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; perform basic troubleshooting and assist patrons with computer use; adapt to changing technology and working conditions; learn the Dewey Decimal Classification System and library procedures; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers; function under demanding time pressure; respond in a positive manner to supervision; and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis. 

Bilingual ability (Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Tagalog) is highly desirable.

Must be physically able to stand for extended periods, walk, bend, kneel, push wheeled carts, lift, reach overhead, go up and down stairs, and use a step stool.

Availability for evening and Saturday shifts is required.

This hourly position is not in Civil Service and does not receive benefits.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to perform cleaning duties to maintain city buildings and facilities and perform related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Sweep, dust, mop, strip, and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets and rugs; dust and polish woodwork fixtures, and equipment; wash windows, walls, and doors; empty and clean waste receptacles; empty recycling containers; clean restrooms and maintain supplies; clean kitchen and lunchroom areas and appliances; dust and clean air vents; Move furniture as required by for cleaning; set up rooms for special events; replace light bulbs and tubes; maintain inventory of equipment and supplies; sweep exterior building entries; secure facilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:  Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial maintenance.

Ability to:  Understand and follow written and oral directions; clean and care for assigned facilities in a safe and efficient manner; maintain and appropriate public service demeanor and positive customer service interactions; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Physical capability to:  Perform sustained manual labor; lift, climb, stoop, crawl, and bend to reach work

Experience:  One year of full time custodial maintenance in public buildings or offices.

Education:  Graduation from high school or equivalent.  Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.

License:  Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License.
