Maintenance Worker III is an advanced journey-level position responsible for operating a variety of light construction equipment in support of Valley Water’s maintenance and construction projects. This role provides agency-wide support for work on creeks, ponds, reservoirs, and other flood control facilities throughout the county.

Assigned to the Vegetation Field Operations Unit, this position performs a broad range of duties supporting Valley Water’s vegetation management programs. Responsibilities include vegetation control, integrated vegetation management, arboriculture, native plant revegetation, invasive plant management, and biotechnical erosion control on Valley Water properties.

This is primarily an outdoor position requiring work in varying and sometimes challenging environmental conditions, including heat, cold, and rain. Incumbents may also be required to respond to after-hours flood control emergencies, including nighttime callouts.

As a light equipment operator, the Maintenance Worker III must possess a valid Class A driver’s license to operate Valley Water commercial vehicles and to transport light equipment used in vegetation management and flood control projects. Daily equipment operation may include a compactor, water truck, tree truck and chipper, dump truck, and wheel loader. Equipment is used to haul vegetative debris, maintain native plant mitigation sites, support invasive plant management efforts, and assist with Valley Water’s sandbag operations.

This position also ultimately requires a Qualified Applicator’s Certificate (QAC) in Category C (Right-of-Way) and Category F (Aquatics) to mix and apply herbicides and calibrate spray equipment for vegetation control on Valley Water managed properties.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Operation of vehicles and equipment associated with vegetation management activities.
• Support of skilled labor contract work on vegetation management activities.
• Calibration of herbicide spray equipment, interpreting pest control recommendations, calculation of herbicide tank mixes, mixing loading and application of herbicides to control undesirable plants.

• Clear brush, weeds, and debris from worksites, canals, ponds, creeks, reservoirs, pipelines, water treatment plants, dams, and other open areas; prune vegetation, perform tree removals including standing or downed trees. 
• Prepare soil and install native plant revegetation per established plans; maintain mitigation areas to achieve success criteria and meet monitoring requirements. 
• Install, adjust, and repair irrigation systems, including heads, lines, and controllers.
• Operate a variety of small power tools and light equipment, including spray equipment, mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, pole saw, hydro seeder, small trenchers, loader, compactors, water trucks, forklift, straw mulcher, auger, sandbag machine, and chipper; clean, adjust, and perform minor maintenance on light equipment to ensure proper operating condition. 
• Mix and apply herbicides, and calibration of spray equipment to control the growth of vegetation on and around flood control and water distribution facilities and rights of way. 
• Build or remove browse cages or other devices to keep wildlife from damaging native plant revegetation sites. 
• Build phytosanitary benches, fences, irrigation, etc. in support of native plant holding facility. 
• Participate in Valley Water’s sandbag program as needed. 
• Perform calculations of required work materials; document daily application of chemical use; photo documentation of work, complete work order dailies, best management practices checklists, surveys, forms, and time data entries. Maintain paper and electronic records of work performed.

Ideal Experience:

Ideal Training and Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Possession of a Qualified Applicator’s Certificate or Qualified Applicator License in Category C issued by the State of California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation at the time of hire.

This position may be filled as Combination Building Inspector I ($80,590 - $107,999 annually) or Combination Building Inspector II ($88,957 - $119,211 annually), depending on candidate experience and qualifications.  

The Combination Building Inspector I/II plays a crucial role in protecting public health, safety, and welfare by reviewing construction projects to ensure compliance with minimum standards. Their inspections cover not only the structural stability of buildings but also key safety aspects such as fire protection, life-safety features, energy efficiency, and the proper functioning of plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems. 

The Combination Building Inspector must possess excellent customer service and communication skills, be self-motivated, exercise discretion and independent judgment, and project a very professional image through in-person, phone, and e-mail interactions at all times. Additionally, this position will plan check in specialized areas such as plumbing, mechanical, and electrical.  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conducts inspection work to enforce building, fire and life safety, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, energy, accessibility, and other related codes and regulations that govern the construction, alteration, repair, and use of buildings and structures.
• Reads and interprets plans and specifications for inspection on commercial, industrial and residential buildings. Performs pre-construction inspections on complex permits to get familiarized with the project milestones and establish communication channels with the contractor and the design team. 
• Participates in the development of policies and procedures; recommends programs and projects to the inspector supervisor and the inspection team.  
• Ensures a high-performance, customer service-oriented work environment that supports the department and City’s mission, objectives, and values. 
• Confers and coordinates with, and provides information and assistance to owners, architects, engineers, contractors, builders, and the general public in the field and office; explains and interprets applicable codes, ordinances, and zoning regulations.

To perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance of City-owned buildings, equipment and facilities.  The purpose of the recruitment is to fill a current vacancy at the Woodland Community & Senior Center (primary duties focus on event setups and janitorial duties/oversight), as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Maintain and repair City buildings, equipment and facilities by performing a variety of semi-skilled carpentry, plumbing, painting, heating/air conditioning, mechanical repair and electrical work as necessary.  Inspect City buildings to locate conditions indicating the need for repairs and maintenance; assist in establishing and implementing preventative maintenance programs.  Operate and maintain a variety of heavy tools and equipment, including small power and hand tools.  Work cooperatively with others.  Regular and consistent attendance. 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Remodel and repair a variety of building components such as counters, tables, desks, bookshelves, cabinets, partitions, walls, windows and doors; boilers, water pumps, exhaust fans, compressors, and other water and sewage system plumbing as required.  Perform electrical work such as wiring and rewiring; replace switches, ballast and receptacles as required.  Prepare simple activity and related reports; maintain inventory and work records as required.  Requisition supplies and materials.  Perform general janitorial duties as needed.  Perform other facility maintenance duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

Facility Maintenance Worker I:  Six (6) months of work experience in carpentry, electrical and maintenance work is desirable.

Facility Maintenance Worker II:  One (1) year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Facility Maintenance Worker I.

License and Certificate:   Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

                             IDEAL CANDIDATE:

The ideal candidate will possess:

• Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate transit operations staff
• knowledge of fixed‑route and paratransit operations, including ADA requirements and industry best practices
• Experience in resolving customer complaints and service issues with professionalism, empathy, and sound judgment
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing public transit, including DMV commercial licensing and safety mandates
• Ability to investigate operational issues, analyze data, and recommend improvements to enhance service reliability and efficiency
• Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with operators, supervisors, contractors, and members of the public
• Ability to manage schedules, maintain accurate records, process time sheets, oversee ADA certifications, and handle operational documentation
• Experience coordinating vehicle maintenance needs and working closely with fleet or maintenance teams
• Confidence operating or overseeing commercial passenger vehicles and ensuring compliance with safety standards
• A customer‑focused mindset and dedication to providing safe, reliable, and accessible transportation services to the community
