About the Position

This temporary position will work directly with the Recreation Supervisor-Special Events, assisting with the coordination, management, and implementation of special events operated by the City of San Carlos. This position will work evenings and weekends as needed from May – September 2026.

Essential Duties

• Assist with logistical elements of each event during the event-planning process, be onsite as needed during events for set-up, tear-down, problem-solving, and post-event tasks
• Perform administrative tasks including purchase inquiries and scheduling
• Staff and maintain the City Information Booth as required at each event
• Establish and maintain relationships with vendors, suppliers, contractors and entertainment
• Be available for event meetings as required

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is seeking a college level Youth Task Force (YTF) Summer College Intern to work in the Gilroy Police Department Violence Prevention Unit. This is a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience, develop leadership skills and work alongside dedicated professionals who are committed to community safety and engagement. The Intern will participate and work with an experienced team and gain skills and knowledge in planning, organizing, and coordinating various youth and community projects, programs, events and tasks related to violence and gang prevention efforts. 

In this exciting opportunity, the YTF Intern will work under the direction of the Youth Task Force Coordinator, and will help carry out community events, participate in community organizing, community forums, community surveying, support engagement projects, and will help lead recreational and outreach programs at San Ysidro Park. The internship is a balance of office/administrative work and hands-on work in the field.

This internship has potential to be extended to the Fall semester.

The Position:

Are you seeking a meaningful career serving youth in a diverse, multicultural community? Join our team and make a positive difference every day. The Community Services Coordinator is delegated lead responsibility for planning, implementing, and evaluating a program of activities or services within a specified program assignment, and, typically, for providing direct leadership in a portion of that assignment. This assignment may be a specifically defined programming area that is narrower in size or scope than those assigned to Supervisors or comprised of multiple delegated responsibilities. This position will coordinate programs and services for the Police Activities League (PAL). This position receives general supervision from higher-level recreation positions and may exercise functional and technical supervision over lower-level and part-time recreation personnel and volunteers.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a valid State of California driver’s license. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical ways to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:

• Experience: Two years of responsible paid leadership experience in recreation or a related human services setting
• Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college-level courses in recreation or a related field.

The candidate should know the basic principles and methods of planning, coordinating, and leading recreation and human services programs and activities. They should understand simple arithmetic and how to handle recreation equipment and materials.  A candidate should have knowledge of general office procedures and an understanding of community groups, activities, programs, and facilities. They should understand the basic principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluations. Bilingual ability in Spanish is highly desirable. A bilingual pay differential is available for candidates fluent in identified languages. Availability is required between 20 and 40 hours per week, depending on the time of year. Availability is typically Monday through Friday; however, occasional weeknights and weekends will be required for PAL special events.

Job Responsibilities:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Instruct and lead specialized recreation and human services activities in such areas as sports, cultural arts, programs for the handicapped, senior citizens, crafts, teens and other areas of leadership requiring leadership in a structured environment.
• Provide activities and general facility supervision and control at a community recreation center or special use facility.
• Coordinate, develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services in assigned program area. Perform a variety of office related functions including program registration, answering citizen inquiries both in person and on the telephone and maintaining routine records and reports as required.
• Observe and take precautions to secure the safety of participants and spectators.
• Assist in preparing program facilities for structured program activities and special events.
• Occasional driving of City vehicles to support programmatic needs, including transporting youth participants on field trips.

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. 

The Building Maintenance Division’s scope of duties includes, but is not limited to the following:

• Provides janitorial, preventative maintenance services, and necessary building and related equipment repairs to all of the City’s facilities, including interior and exterior work.
• Builds and/or installs items involving finish carpentry, painting, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and other skilled crafts work.

SENIOR PLANNER

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of professional planning responsibilities and tasks associated with the coordination and implementation of complex planning projects; performs a variety of duties relating to the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of technical land use, environmental, zoning, and other City planning data.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the advanced journey level in the professional planning class series. The position is characterized by the level of technical expertise and skill and independent oversight of out of the ordinary, high profile, complex and atypical projects, while functioning as the project coordinator, working with and leading interdisciplinary teams. The Senior Planner is distinguished from the Associate Planner by the complexity and technical expertise required to work on assigned projects.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Coordinate, lead, and perform professional level work in the fields of current and advanced planning, zoning administration, design review, and economic development activities.
2. Prepare, edit, and review complex reports on a wide range of planning issues; make presentations to the City Council, Planning Commission, standing and ad hoc committees, developers, community groups, and outside agencies.
3. Review and approve or deny plan checks for building projects.
4. Supervise and participate in the review of complex development proposals for conformance to City standards; resolve disputes between the City and developers or property owners.

The Gilroy Police Department is seeking a motivated and community-minded undergraduate Police Administration Intern interested in gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic law enforcement environment.
