The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Supervising Civil Engineer in the Public Works Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to supervise a section of the Engineering Division engaged in the application of engineering to a variety of public works capital improvement projects and construction and maintenance programs.

One of the current vacancies will be specifically designated towards Measure FF: the Sustainable and Accountable Funding for Equitable Street Transformation, Revitalization, Enhancements, and Essential Traffic Safety (SAFE STREETS) Initiative.

SAFE STREETS authorizes an annual parcel tax of $0.17 per square foot for residential properties and $0.25 per square foot for other properties over a 14-year period. This parcel tax is projected to generate approximately $15 million annually, dedicated to funding street and sidewalk repairs, safety improvements, and environmental infrastructure projects.

This vacancy, reporting directly to the Principal Program Manager, will be at the center of this high-impact initiative. The role will be fast-paced, challenging, and critical to the success of Measure FF. The position will:

• Lead the technical review of projects; ensuring plans, specifications, and cost estimates are accurate, complete, and buildable before they go out to bid.
• Provide hands-on oversight of technical staff and consultants, guiding design and engineering decisions that affect public safety.
• Manage complex design and construction contracts, balancing scope, budget, schedule, and quality under tight timelines.
• Coordinate across multiple departments, commissions, and external agencies to keep projects aligned and moving forward.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering and five years of increasingly responsible experience in design and construction management of civil engineering projects, at least two years of which were at a level equivalent to the City's Associate Civil Engineer.

Other requirements include possession of a valid California registration as a professional Civil Engineer and a valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Reporting to the Division Manager, the Senior Library Page is responsible for a variety of routine but essential library tasks. 

Key duties include:

• Checking in and shelving library materials,

• Mending and processing new or damaged items,

• Sorting and shifting collections,

• Shelf-reading, and maintaining organized and inviting displays,

• Locating materials for patron holds,

• Duplicating and weeding lists, and 

• Accurately updating item records in the Library’s Integrated Library System (ILS).

In addition to core responsibilities, this position helps train new Library Pages and serves as a mentor to part-time Page staff, fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment. The Senior Library Page also assists library staff with special projects and events, and provides customer service support at the public desk as needed.

This role requires demanding physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements. THE POSITION

To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, signs, water meters, sewers, storm drains, pump stations and tree maintenance. 

The purpose of this recruitment is to hire a Temporary / Part-Time position.  Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Maintenance Worker I position may be considered for employment as an Intern.  Temporary / Part-Time employees work no more than 130 hours per month AND 960 hours per fiscal year. IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate for this position should have previous Road Maintenance experience; sidewalks, driveways, roads, curbs, and gutters, although not required. The Ideal Candidate will be able to follow directions, demonstrate good communication skills (orally and in writing), be flexible, arrive on time, have good attendance, a positive attitude, be able to work independently with limited supervision, and a willingness to take on and learn new skills. Operate a variety of light and moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment including such pieces as a loader, dump truck, water truck, rubber-tired and steel rollers, rubber-tired tractor with all attachments (except backhoe attachment), striping equipment, and trencher to perform a variety of routine construction and maintenance operations.  Spread asphalt in patching and repairing streets.  Use concrete cutting equipment; operate a jackhammer; pour and finish concrete; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work.  Paint and install traffic markings on streets, crosswalks, parking lots, and curbs; operate a striping truck; manufacture and install traffic signs and remove signs no longer required.  Install and remove traffic control barricades and cones.  Assist in a variety of tree maintenance activities including low limb, stump routing, tree watering, and tree planting.  Utilize proper safety precautions and comply with policies and procedures in the Department Illness and Injury Prevention Program.  Operate equipment and vehicles with possession of all necessary licenses and certificates.  Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Respond to inquiries from the general public.  Clean storm grates and drains.  Perform work in emergency situations as required.  Perform minor and preventive maintenance on paint spraying equipment, compressors, sprayers, compactors, and other construction equipment.  Work cooperatively with others.  Perform related duties as assigned.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.  

Experience: One (1) year of work experience in construction or related field.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

As a result, the Utilities Maintenance Worker I will have fewer opportunities to exercise independent discretion and judgment on matters related to work procedures and methods.

Utilities Maintenance Worker II:

This is the Journey level in the Utilities Maintenance Worker series. This class differs from Utilities Maintenance Worker I in that incumbents perform more complex maintenance duties including working independently, exercising judgment, and operating the full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment.  The Utilities Maintenance Worker II may also be expected to assist in the oversight and training of less experienced personnel. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or by candidates with prior work experience elsewhere.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Check water meters for proper operation; troubleshoot registers and repair. Initiate and discontinue water service to customer accounts as directed. The San Rafael Fire Department (SRFD) is piloting a 6-month, part-time, BLS ambulance  program and is seeking up to 6 motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team! This opportunity is designed for individuals who are pursuing a career in the fire/EMS services and want to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment. As an EMT, you will work closely with our experienced staff to learn about fire department operations, emergency response procedures, and community engagement.

Under the instruction and supervision of the EMS Battalion Chief, the ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and a strong commitment to teamwork. They will embrace training opportunities, from classroom learning to hands-on field experience, and apply this knowledge to support emergency medical services and operations. The mission of the EMT program within the San Rafael Fire Department is to support emergency operations by providing high-quality Basic Life Support services under the guidance of the EMS Battalion Chief. • Emergency Response Support: Provide emergency medical care at the basic life support level and provide support services to Firefighter/Paramedic crews at prolonged incidents including fires, medical emergencies, rescues, and hazardous materials incidents. Participate in drills and exercises to enhance your understanding of emergency response protocols. 

• Equipment and Vehicle Operation and Communication: identify and operate various types of equipment for life saving and support measures; safely and effectively drive ambulance unit to specific locations while in communication with dispatchers, treatment center personnel, and/or other emergency team members and internal/external personnel, in a respectful and collaborative manner. Consistently practice and promote safety for yourself, colleagues, patients, and the public in all aspects of emergency medical response and care.  

• Training Participation: Attend training sessions, workshops, and skill-building exercises to learn about emergency medicine and fire suppression techniques, search and rescue operations, medical aid procedures, and other essential firefighting skills. 

• Equipment and Facility Maintenance: Assist in the maintenance and inspection of firefighting equipment, tools, and apparatus. Learn proper cleaning, care, and upkeep of vehicles, gear and tools to ensure readiness for emergency situations. Assist in the tracking, organizing, and dispensing of inventory.  

• Community Outreach: Participate in community events, educational programs, and public demonstrations to promote fire safety awareness and engage with the local community. Serve as an ambassador for the fire department and provide information about fire prevention and preparedness. 

• Administrative Support: Assist with administrative tasks such as record-keeping, data entry, and inventory management. Gain exposure to the behind-the-scenes operations of a fire department.  

• Physical Fitness: Work towards maintaining a level of physical fitness necessary for performing firefighting duties. Engage in physical training and conditioning activities as directed by the department. 

• Professional Development: Actively seek opportunities for learning and growth within the fire service. Take part in discussions with experienced firefighters to gain insights into career pathways and development strategies. 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE 

• Must be at least 18 years of age with a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.  

• Must possess a valid EMT (EMT-1/EMT-B) Certificate either through the National Registry EMT or State of California. Must maintain local certification requirements.  

• Must possess a valid CPR “Healthcare Provider” card issued by the American Heart Association or equivalent.  

• Must possess, or within one month of appointment must obtain, an Ambulance Driver Certificate through the CA DMV.  

• Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory record.

• Physical fitness and ability to perform basic physical tasks, continuously move +/-25lbs, and lift up to 50lbs.

• Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as adhere to the chain of command.  

• Bilingual language skills. 

DURATION

This position is part of a 6-month pilot program. The exact duration may vary based on department needs and program performance. Successful candidates may not work more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year.

The City of Menlo Park is seeking a Regulatory Compliance Analyst for the Public Works Department. Under general direction, the Regulatory Compliance Analyst coordinates and oversees the planning, development, and implementation of regulatory programs within the Public Works Department. The role involves organizing, investigating, developing, directing, and managing the activities of regulatory programs to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws related to engineering and related fields. The Regulatory Compliance Analyst will maintain a thorough understanding of the laws and regulations set forth by various federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. Additionally, this specialist will inspect properties, facilities, operations, and construction activities to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

About the Department

The Public Works Department consists of approximately 72 full time employees and is responsible for maintaining and improving the City’s streets, parks, water and stormwater systems, traffic signals, fleet, and public buildings.  Public Works provides many of the basic services affecting the daily lives of everyone living, working, visiting, and commuting within the City, including:  

• 26 City-owned buildings/facilities and their grounds
• A fleet of over 250 vehicles and pieces of equipment
• 97 miles of streets
• Drinking water delivery for 16,000 customers
• Flood protection and stormwater management programs particularly along the San Francisco Bay, San Francisquito Creek and Atherton Channel
• 14 parks, 2 open spaces, 14 playgrounds, 2 dog parks, 9 sports fields, and 14 tennis/pickleball courts
• Efforts to preserve and expand the urban canopy, including 20,000 public trees
• Multimodal transportation services including 42 traffic signals, safe routes to schools and citywide shuttle programs. 

The department has nearly a $40 million operating budget supported by over 25 different special/dedicated funding sources for the varied programs and services provided to the community. In addition, the City has an approximate $100 million capital improvement program, in part due to a successful track record in pursuing grants from a variety of local, state and federal sources. Some of the exciting efforts on the horizon include efforts to protect the San Francisco Bay shoreline and adjacent community from sea level rise; efforts to eliminate the City’s reliance on fossil fuels through building and fleet electrification; making investments in transportation safety through strategic quick-build projects and large infrastructure changes like a pedestrian/bicycle undercrossing at Caltrain; and ensuring the equitable delivery of services throughout the entire city in alignment with the goals and programs developed as part of the city’s first environmental justice element underway.
