The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Electrician in the Public Works Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to perform installation, maintenance, and repair on a wide variety of electrical equipment used in street lighting, traffic signal control, sewage lift stations, HVAC and automation, building power distribution, fire alarm, and related systems and equipment; operate a variety of hand and power tools; and perform related work as assigned. The Electrician has responsibility for working in all facets of the electrical trade, ensuring safe practices and operation of equipment. Electricians must demonstrate an acceptable level of competency in each of the job knowledges for electrical mathematics, basic AC and DC theory, industrial electronics, motor controls and electrical codes.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years of progressively responsible and difficult electrical experience.

Other requirements include obtaining a valid Class "B" California driver's license prior to the completion of the one-year probationary period.  Candidates must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities.  When driving on City business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.  Candidates must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds; must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions; must be willing to work from aerial buckets and underground in confined places and with possible exposure to potentially hazardous substances, with proper protection; must be willing to work overtime and off-hours shifts in emergency situations; must be willing to be on stand-by on a rotating basis; must possess good color vision.

EXAM PROCESS

SRFECC is preparing for a Dispatcher Academy, beginning February 2026! As a Dispatcher I, you will be a key player in the public safety network, managing both emergency and non-emergency calls. Your role involves receiving critical information, dispatching appropriate Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) resources, providing live-saving instructions, relaying facts, and ensuring effective communication throughout the incident. This is an entry-level position ideal for individuals with no prior public safety dispatching experience. Advancement to Dispatcher II is expected within two years, and offers greater responsibility and higher pay.

This position requires the ability to work well under pressure, demonstrate exceptional communication skills, and think quickly during emergency situations. Shift work is required, and you must be available for nights, weekends, and holidays.

Key Responsibilities:
Dispatch Operations:

• Operate a Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) console with a multi-line telephone system, radio console, and office computer terminal.
• Answer incoming calls and gather necessary information to evaluate the nature and urgency of the situation, and triage the call appropriately.
• Following applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines, dispatch appropriate Fire and EMS units, ensuring a prompt and accurate response.
• Keep track of the location and status of fire apparatus, units, and investigators, updating as needed.

Communication and Coordination:

• Transmit critical messages to Fire/EMS units responding to emergencies.
• Provide emergency medical self-help instructions to citizens while EMS units are en route.
• Coordinate with external agencies, such as utility companies, water services, and law enforcement agencies, as needed.

Support and Documentation:

• Answer general inquiries or refer calls to the appropriate department for non-emergency concerns.
• Complete department forms, maintain accurate logs, and ensure compliance with procedures.
• Participate in regular training, drills, and public education programs.

Preschool Teacher

Under direction of a Recreation Supervisor, the Preschool Teacher plans, schedules, and organizes preschool classes for the City’s Village Park Preschool program, assures policies and procedures are maintained, and performs related work as required.

Essential Duties

• Plan, organize, and implement activities that support early childhood education and socialization
• Lead a variety of activities including, but not limited to, arts and crafts, organized games, story time, music/singing activities, science, cooking, early writing skills, and interactive circle time
• Ensure proper safety precautions are observed

Benefits: Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act of 2014 Paid Sick Leave Benefit. This benefit accrues at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked to a maximum benefit of 24 hours per year. THE POSITION

Tri-City is currently hiring to fill a full-time vacancy for the position of Peer Support Specialist I/II (PSS) within the Mental Health Student Services Act (MHSSA) program. The PSS position provides peer-to-peer support services in the office and/or in the field including, but not limited to outreach, support, encouragement, guidance, advocacy, and referrals to external resources and services for clients and their families; builds rapport with clients and their families through sharing stories of lived experience and recovery. Funding for this position will end on July 1, 2026. 

This position is responsible for a variety of ongoing responsibilities including, but not limited to:

• Encourages and supports clients to fully engage in services; provides outreach and assists clients in addressing and overcoming barriers to treatment.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Community Development Department coordinates and manages the City’s development-related functions: including long-range planning, housing policy and programs, planning project review, zoning and building code updates, development and subdivision review, permit processing, building inspection services, and code compliance. The Department also serves as the environmental coordinator for the City, ensuring compliance with the California Coastal Act and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).     

The Department provides staff support to the City Council, Planning Commission, Architectural Advisory Committee, and Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.  The Department team includes a Director, two Senior Planners, an Associate Planner for Housing, part-time Planning Analyst, Administrative Assistant, Permit Technician, Community Preservation Specialist, and a Building Official.

Assistant Planner – Essential Job Functions

• Perform routine and moderately complex administrative, technical, and professional work in current planning.
• Conduct technical review of development and land use applications.
• Prepare staff reports for routine land use permits and present recommendations.
• Serve as first point of contact at the public counter; provide customer service to residents, applicants, architects, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Explain municipal codes, ordinances, the General Plan, and the certified Local Coastal Program.
• Coordinate project review with departments and agencies.
• Research and compile data needed for ordinance drafting and permit review.
• Support long-range planning tasks and community engagement.

Associate Planner – Essential Job Functions

• Apply Local Coastal Program policies and conduct thorough analysis for compliance.
• Prepare detailed staff reports; present to Planning Commission and City Council.
• Evaluate environmental impacts and prepare CEQA documents (NOEs, Initial Studies, Negative Declarations, NODs).
• Coordinate CEQA work with Senior Planners and consultants.
• Conduct technical and policy studies on zoning, land use, coastal access, housing, transportation, and related topics.
• Assist with zoning code amendments and long-range planning initiatives.
• Coordinate consultant contracts.
• Provide technical and professional advice to applicants, residents, staff, and agencies.
• Review architectural drawings, elevations, landscaping, and site plans for compliance.
• Prepare maps, graphics, charts, and databases using GIS.
• Participate in community engagement efforts, workshops, and hearings.
• Support design review and long-range planning documents.
